I got stuck at this part because I was doing it wrong. Never beat it until years later on emulator.

Maridia in Super Metroid, because I went in without the Gravity suit:
>Going through the game.
>Saw that glass tube you go through and thought it could break.
>Tried everything, coming back to it every time I got a new weapon.
>It finally budged with the Power Bomb.
>Savescummed my way around, trying to do wall jumps or freezing flying enemies to reach platforms.
>Spent a whole week there with nothing more than a Missile upgrade acquired until I gave up and decided to explore other places.
>Turns out I never bothered going right from Samus' ship at all.
>A whole new area with a truckload of items.
>Eventually finished the game.

this part of re2. my brother and i both could not tell you could drop down next to that handrail (which looked more like a pipe to me). it didnt help that i was playing on a tiny tv but i remember being stuck here for a few days i think. i would come home from school and play for a few minutes trying to figure out what was wrong. i really thought my save was bricked or something until i finally realized.

Not really an in-game thing, but still s stupid kids thing related to games: in dark sun, there's a plot point involving poisoned guavas. But due to a coding error, all guavas were poison. So it wasn't until i found them in the grocery store when i was an adult that i learned that guavas were not, in fact, just poisonous fruit.

This fucking ledge. You're supposed to jump to it from that chain link flooring. Problem is, there is no other ledge in the game that is this height. It looks too high to jump to, so you figure it must be an exit rather than an entrance. There must be some other door, some other path, some item or something that can help me get up to it. Me and my brother were stuck at this spot for like a week, neither of us knowing how to progress. At this point in the game, you're so familiar with the mechanics, movement, etc. that you can intuit what feels right and what feels wrong, what jumps you can make and what jumps you can't. When I finally jumped to it, after combing through every room of the temple multiple times and coming up empty, it looks like youre going to miss the jump and faceplant on the wall and fall into the lava below, but at the last second, the game actually BUMPS Link up about a foot and you hang on to the ledge. Fucking stupid.

When I told my brother I got past this part, he asked me "How?"
"You just jump to that ledge."
Facepalms all around.

I played OOT (beyond like the 3rd dungeon) for the first time last year as well through the 3ds port. Also got stuck here.
For some reason I ended up putting the game down in Ganon's castle and not picking it up again. I did the same with Wind Waker years ago and dropped it in the last dungeon, not sure I can be bothered to go back to OOT for half a dungeon and some credit sequences now.

In Super Mario RPG, my brother and I were stuck in Marrymore for a while. We never got the Cricket Pie for Frogfucius, so we couldn't go on. Forgot about going to the shop in the Mushroom Kingdom completely.

This in alundra. Theres even a sign that tells you the order in a not at all difficult to understand way. My problem was not realizing that you need to stack them. I placed one at a time, then removed it for the next one in the sequence.

the barrel in Sonic 3
>oh but that's a common-

I'm 31. I had a Genesis as a "below 10 years old" child because my parents had me buy my own games from chore money, and it was cheaper. I had access to gamefaqs.
Instead of looking up how to get past the barrel, I looked up cheatcodes, put in debug mode, and would play up to the barrel and debug phase through the floor to get past it.

Zelda: Link's Awakening. I couldn't connect the clue about the raccoon's nose to the Magic Powder. My cousin had to show me that one. Much later, I got stumped at the Face Shrine where "the eyes had walls", but I then lost the cart and never got to figure that out at all.

A lot of the old Sierra adventure games. I'd load up a game, walk around for a little bit, die a few times, get bored, turn 360 and leave. Didn't own any of their hint books back then, so in my defense they weren't really beatable without them. I did replay a bunch of them a few years ago and beat them all, but I did have to hunt for an online guide quite a few times because there were way too many damn moon logic puzzles.

One of the God of War games, I think GoW 2. There's a puzzle where you have to take a dead body and leave it on a switch to hold the door open. Dead bodies occasionally float by in a sewer stream, behind a grate. You can only see a small part of it at a time, and it's easy to glimpse that section and not see a body floating by, so I was stuck there for a while

I got one similar due to ESL. Right at the very end I couldn't beat Ganon because I didn't have the Silver Arrows. I'd go to the fortune-teller and she would say something about "a place of gossip" I didn't quite get back then.
After wandering a lot I ended up finding by accident the store that sells the big bombs in the Dark World (The hint was about going to the library's counterpart), and even there I spent some time stuck because I didn't know I had to pick the bomb up to carry it all the way to the Pyramid to blow up that cracked wall, thinking it would upgrade the ones I had after paying.
It's a good thing I had nothing else to play other than that and SMW back then or I would have given up.

Upon release, this shield-push puzzle pinned me at the beginning of LA. I dropped the game, then tried it again when Super Game Boy came out, randomly pressing buttons until the thing budged suddenly.

I don't know if it's "stupid," because this mechanic is never hinted at, never primed for you, and never used again. It's cool, but truly awful game design that I'm surprised made it to release.

In Burai Fighter, there's this one mini boss that pops up barely 1min into stage 1, you're supposed to aim for the blue core on its back to kill it, it's a trivial thing to do if you know about it because the boss doesn't "activate" until it scrolls around halfway into the screen but it still takes damage, so if you slip behind it and shoot it quick enough, it'll die before it even has a chance to defend itself. The game is one of those with a "turn" mechanic btw (press a button to switch between aiming left or right), guess this was the game's way of introducing you to it.

Anyways, I rented this game and could never get past this little shit. The weak point seems so obvious in hindsight, specially if you know you can turn around, but I didn't know because not a single shooter I had played back then had a mechanic like that, and the game doesn't provide good enough feedback to let you know your attacks aren't working, so I figured you just had to shoot it long enough from the front like every other shooter enemy, which I did try for a while but gave up because the thing itself is fairly hard to dodge once it actually activates and starts attacking you and I could never survive more than a few seconds. So yeah, I gave up and wasted a rent because I couldn't even get past the start of stage 1.

This is more than anything a result of being ESL at the time and not being able to parse out the hints given to us, but my brother and I couldn't figure out for the life of us how to get into River City High and beat the game. We eventually found out through a cousin who had a magazine with tips for the game (IIRC he even mailed us the relevant page since he lived far away), but by then we didn't have the game anymore since we were only borrowing it from a friend of my brother's that he stopped hanging out with. We didn't beat it until years later through emulation.
