Why did Microsoft drop it? If you’ve ever owned a Sidewinder peripheral, you know they offered high quality at an affordable price.
They should bring them back with but updated. Some even had gyros and other cool features.
>>
>>12341832
They were tools to popularize DirectInput. When that was accomplished they weren't needed.
>>
>>12341832
>They should bring them back with but updated
they did that, they called it the xbox controller
>>
>>12341854
Xbox controller has nothing to do with SideWinder.
>>
ihave one of this.. very orrible pad..
>>
>>12341832
>Why did Microsoft drop it?
They didn't, they just renamed it the Xbox controller.
>>12341872
Nonsense. Look up the prototypes of the Xbox controller. They started with a Sidewinder and iterated on it.
>>
>>12341882
The d-pad is great for playing 8-bit games. I used a sidewinder for emulation for years. Not too great for fighters tho.

The universe diverged and we entered the bad timeline. The one without the Sidewinder 2.
>>
>>12341884
The Xbox controller keeps things simple with no gimmicks, while the SideWinder had a unique feature for each revision.
>b-but both are made by Microsoft!!1 Just l-lock at the p-prototypes
The 2010 Ford Fusion SEL shares its platform with the 2010 Mazda 6, but they are distinct cars with different engines and transmissions. Xbox controllers don’t have gyro and lack ABC/XYZ button layout. The fact that I have to point this out just highlights how empty your head is. Range ban India.

I had this one because allegedly the subspace continuum player Optix used it, and he was the best player in Extreme Games.

Yeah gotta agree with anons, the sidewinder was replaced with the xbox controller, current xbox controllers are excellent.
>>
>>12341931
I have no idea what they were thinking with the boomerang, it's funny how fast they pivoted after the backlash but the ps3 controller we got was really bad, they did need a major revision over the dualshock format, maybe we would have been better off if they'd kept this.
>>
>>12341846
That makes sense, considering they never had official DOS drivers. That's something that always irked me about Sidewinders.
>>12342161
I used to own one of these, and I just realized that it has basically the same button layout as a Saturn controller.

The way the white and black buttons are placed next to ABXY on the duke is pretty much an ABC/XYZ layout.
>>
>>12341970
Man up, every man knows about cars and will get what I mean. If you’re a little gay man, you won’t.
>>12342929
The black and white buttons are smaller than the ABXY ones, and their travel distance is shorter. You should give them a try before commenting.

That SideWinder has a gyroscope, and that wheel is for flight simulation.

I'm never buying anything microshart produces first party ever again.
>>
>>12341832
It's a horrible controller. Even back in like 2002 when I was 10 years old, I already felt this way about it
>>
>>12344245
>Even back in like 2002 when I was 10 years old, I already felt this way about it
You were too young and naïve to understand it. I bet you grew up thinking that gyro was just a gimmick.
>>
>>12344259
>I bet you grew up thinking that gyro was just a gimmick
It's the other way around, gyro is something only ten year olds are impressed with. Anybody who plays FPS uses a mouse and board, gyro is a fucking meme.

Still is

Steering with gyro is awesome, something the SideWinder could do. If you haven’t played with one, your opinion is worthless.

I had this one. What I'll say is that it felt quite robust for its low price, and it Just Werked after plugging it in. However, the D-Pad wasn't the best, and it was sorely missing Start and Select buttons (I mostly used it for SNES emulation). It did its job until I got a PS2 to USB adapter.
>>
>>12342818
Kutaragi just wanted something weird to see how people would react.
>>
>>12344273
Considering its inclusion in modern controllers, nah.
>>
>>12341891
the Pro IntelliMouse is good, except for the shitty scroll wheel
>>
>>12342161
This is the one I have. Bought it 24 years ago and still works perfectly. Bought it so I could play Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2 and Eternal Champions on the SEGA Genesis emulator I downloaded on my first computer back in 2002. Good times.
>>
>>12345275
I bet you think Dual Sense's trackpad isn't a gimmick either
>>
>>12345657
It’s not, unless you’re not playing on PC with Steam.
>>
>>12344867
I never could get the psx usb controller adapter to work "back in the day". Joy2Key was the biggest piece of shit homo software ever created
>>
>>12341832
Still have my Microsoft (tm) Sidewinder Precision Pro that can with Microsoft (tm) Flight Simulator 98 (as real as it gets). They had the foresight to include an adapter from serial to USB 1.1 so it still works fine on modern PCs.
>>
>>12341832
My dad had two of those, but the gyro-less version. We emulated a lot of Genesis and SNES games on our IBM NetVista. The D-pad wasn’t too bad, though it wasn’t as good as the SNES one, so my dad did something to fix them.
We had the Commander too, and I played a lot of StarCraft: Brood War and Age of Empires II with it.
Microsoft peripherals were great. I had an Xbox, and the Duke controller was fantastic--high quality with excellent analog triggers. The 360 controller was a disappointment because they adopted the DualShock layout except for the analog stick position. Things went downhill with the Kinect and the One/Series controllers, which were just revisions of the 360. The One added rumble to the analog sticks, improved the D-pad by making it mechanical, and updated the bumpers. The Series added a share button and that domed D-pad shape.
Valve's Steam Controller feels more like a successor to the Microsoft SideWinder than to Xbox's. is gimmicky, well made with high quality and unique.
90s Microsoft is gone; the current company doesn’t even feel American anymore, and they’ve lost their values and vision, "saar".
>>
>>12342161
>Extreme Games.
Lol

Trenchwars was literally my favorite game of all time. So amazing. God I wish I could go back.

I also loved the sidewinder but never played subspace with a controller that seems insane
>>
I had the 4-button one, and I played the hell outta Commander Keen and Prehistorik Isle 2 with it. ZSNES too, but I mapped select to the 0 key and start to spacebar. The church put on this two-day summer camp where they'd hand out these "talents" for every activity you finished. I cashed mine in for a Sidewinder and a T-shirt that said "Maranatha, Christ is Coming," but man, the design was straight-up metal, like some heavy band album cover.
>>
>>12342161
This has always been the most ergonomic controller I ever owned. I still have two of them, collecting dust.
>still works perfectly
How do you connect it to your PC? Do you use an adapter or do you still have a PC with a serial port?
>>
>>12342862
> they never had official DOS drivers
What would a DOS driver even do. DOS does not have a game pad API, so there is nothing useful a driver could do. Typically under DOS each game has to directly support any hardware it will use. The only exception is in some cases where a DOS driver would make a piece of hardware (usually a sound card) emulate a different sound card. Like some newer sound cards had a dos driver to emulate sound blaster .

the recessed buttons are just horrible.
>>
>>12342923
I had one, but the stick you screw onto the D-pad broke within the first few days of use. It was decent, but they did some impressive stuff with the serial port. I think you could connect up to four at once.
>>
>>12342923
I'm really happy I stumbled on one at a garage sale. Cut my teeth on roms using this pad. Also played thru NFSU1 with it using the thumbstick. I miss it. This was also the 2nd gen CD-i controller iirc
>>
>>12352801
The dpad is so stiff
>>
>>12353778
It probably was. I don't remember, it was 23 years ago. I don't think it has shoulder buttons and I'd probably'd have missed that than anything
>>
>>12353926
I still have one of them and can vouch that the dpad is really stiff and works better with the stick attached. And yeah there weren't shoulder buttons.
