The GameCube was the fastest to cut its price and it did nothing. In fact, in 2003 the GameCube was selling so badly, that Nintendo had to halt shipments and stop production. The GameCube was $99 and below at some retailers by this point. What went wrong here?
Nobody should care about the sales of a console unless you’re some shareholder
>>12342752Playstation won
>>12342760Actually it was just the Playstation until the Playstation 2 came out.
>>12342747>What>Getty watermarkOh the OP slop into the hidden thread realm you go
>>12342747Look at the price difference between the XBox, PS2 and GameCube bundle. This is a flyer from the country where GameCube sold best too...
>>12342747Ps2 and xbox was the best combo that's why>ps2 as a dvd player and didn't need a dvd kit>xbox for multiplayer games because ps2s online was schizophrenic as shit and required a sign up for different shit each game>ps2 supports ps1 games>xbox had halo>ps2 had resident evil 1-4 silent hill 1-4>xbox had some early 2000s pc games >multiplats between the two USUALLY ran better on xbox (except silent hill 2)Gamecube needed more than super smash bros and Mario sunshine to compete.
>>12342801If you had a Ps2 you didn't need Shitbox or fuckin gaylo
>>12342752FPBP Business nerds are the lowest tier of retro gamer, they only ever play bestsellers and hardly if ever challenge and develop their own tastes beyond what advertising they're aware of
>>12342801>Gamecube needed more than super smash bros and Mario sunshine to compete. With the exceptions of Smash and Metroid, every continuing Nintendo property disappointed old fans in its Gamecube iteration. Sunshine, Wind Waker, Double Dash, F-Zero, and Starfox were all either mediocre or they fell short of expectations. You played them and thought, "Eh, it's okay." There was nothing cutting-edge, nothing to astonish you like Ocarina had in '98. Castlevania never arrived, and the only Final Fantasy on the Gamecube was Crystal Chronicles, which looked feeble compared to FFX over on the PS2.Sega came along and put Sonic on the console, which might have been a cause for celebration among Sonic fans if the games didn't represent a lowering of standards at Sega that sank even further than Nintendo. Meanwhile the Xbox was getting quality Sega games like Outrun 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Shenmue 2. (I hated Shenmue but it had its cult of admirers).
>>12342747I thought that they stopped production in 2005, not 2003.
>>12342752This. I'm getting the business in another thread about the analogue 3d and summer cart 64 I just got because it's not 1 trillion % authentic. Who cares? The games themselves should be the focus, not hardware, nor salesTo answer OP's question, I think it's in part because it didn't have a dvd playing option, but also because maybe in hindsight a lot of players were tired of the perceived obsession with purple? idk, I didn't mind, but muricans for the most part are weird about shit like that. I think gamecube had some of the best games of any gen with regarr8to Nintendo anyways
>>12342809I was an idort in 6th gen. Xbox and Gamecube were better multiplayer consoles than PS2 simply by virtue of having more controller ports. Halo wasn't my favorite back then, but I still think its popularity was well-earned.>>12342827It's hard to top Mario 64 and Ocarina in terms of how goddamn revolutionary both of those games were, so it would've taken a miracle to exceed them. That's not to say Nintendo couldn't have done better, but they had a tough act to follow.I definitely agree with you on Starfox, at least if we're talking Dinosaur Planet. Assault, on the other hand, I think could've been a great successor to 64 if it had a bit more polish. As for F-Zero, I've never actually played GX, but I thought the only notable complaint people had with it was its high level of difficulty.
>>12342809Does not change the fact its the best second console to have with the ps2. Everyone already owned a ps2 but without the box youd miss out on kino like breakdown or the only good buffy the vampire slayer game. Also dont forget the xbox had the best versions of many multiplat games.
I bought a new Mario Soccer console - the white version of the GC, with the game pack in for £40 when they were clearing out stock towards the end. I still have it in box, never opened as I already had one.
>>12342747Both Sega and Nintendo made game consoles instead of dvd players and were punished for it.
>>12342747Not sure. My theory is that the gaming audience in general was aging up. Nintendo thought they would get a whole new population of 8 year olds who would love the gamecube. But I guess 8 year olds in 2001 didn't like video games as much as 8 year olds in 1993. I don't know why, it's not like the iPhone existed yet.
>>12343007>But I guess 8 year olds in 2001 didn't like video games as much as 8 year olds in 1993. I think Nintendo got a bit too girly in the Gamecube era. The lunchbox design of the console, the purple unit being the one most commonly seen in advertising, the toyetic controller, Mario Sunshine using intensely saturated colours with lots of pinks and purples, the cutesy voice acting in that game, and so on. 8-year-old BOYS would be put off by this. Don't forget that there were kids' games on the PS2, and they were less embarrassing for boys.
>>12342747They were playing the long game. Parents bought their kids this extremely cheap purple box and those kids grew up to be Nintendo's current fanbase that buys the Switch and makes endless youtube videos about their games.
>>12343271Based on how much zoomers seem to jerk off to the mere idea of the GC, perhaps they were playing the long game. Don't get me wrong, I like the GC and have since launch, but seeing how much young collectors cream themselves over it is funny, relative to the lukewarm reputation it had for nearly 20 years. I get the feeling the Wii U is shaping up to receive similar treatment (if it isn't already).
>>12342747Gamecube was the first retro console... if Dreamcast was 5.5 Gen, Gamecube was 4.5 Gen. It got ports of ancient, dusty Sonic games in an era where retro was complete out-of-date simply because kids had been emulating them on their PC for years at that point. And Gamecube got ports of older Atari and Intellivision titles that kids hadn't even thought of emulating. No one knew who the games were supposed to be for.
Whoever came up with the Wii deserved a x100 raise
>>12343025don't forget the garish, irritating music of Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion... one was too complex for kids to play and the other was too dull. The result was that people couldn't really get into a flow state with either one of their flagship releases.
>>12342908>I bought a new Mario Soccer console - the white version of the GC, with the game pack in for £40 when they were clearing out stock towards the end. I still have it in box, never opened as I already had one.pictures?
>>12342747The first price cut for the PS2 happened in May 2002, to $199, two years after its release.Since the Xbox and GC were released in November 2001, it is comical that Sony forced Microsoft and Nintendo to reduce prices just a 6 months after launch. Just imagine how upset their executives were and the monumental financial losses.>>12342793Even so, no one wanted this trash.
>>12343296It was too innocent for the early 2000's post 9/11 edge.
Can't believe nobody mentioned the pitiful 1.5 GB MiniDVDs they used. Compare that with the 4 GB and 8 GB DVDs on the competition. Still not giving developers a big reason to support the thing.
>>12342850>I was an idort in 6th genBased. This shot is from 2003. Pretty sure I had a GBA SP attached to that Gamecube. Also has a GBPlayer at some point as well.
>>12343852lol nvm, the Gameboy Player is attached
>>12343852Actually this must be from 2005. I see Katamari Damacy in that stack. +bonus pic
>>12342747Nintendo didn't age with its audience and by the 6th gen the core players were teens more interested in adult themes. They also were late to market and didn't offer the same capabilities that the competitors did.
>>12343852I see you had your Xbox hooked up to a PC CRT through an S-Video to VGA adapter. How was the quality?
>>12343297All of those retro collections had versions on the PS2 and Xbox as well. I should know, because I played them a lot back then. What the PS2 and Xbox didn't get were Sonic Adventure ports, but those games weren't "old and dusty" at the time.
>>12343897Kind of shitty due to the adapter being cheap as shit. But I was happy with 480p
>>12343913S-Video only goes up to 480i, but I get what you mean. Kinda surprised since the Xbox's S-Video output is quite good in my experience.
>>12343918That flicker filter really did wonders on composite/s-video. That higher pitch CRT would do good at looking like a soft 480p native.
>>12343913>S-Video only goes up to 480iOh damn. I think I just wanted to be able to use S-Video, no TV I ever owned had it
>>12343927The crazy part is that I noticed this when I had my Xbox hooked up to my old 2008 32" Sony Bravia 720p flatscreen. Mind you, that TV was unusually good at handling standard definition signals.>>12343943I've seen my fair share of CRTs that only had RF or mono RCA. Where I grew up, it was quite common to use a VCR as an RF modulator.
>>12343971Oh I know, I've used dinky 13" crts over composite, compared directly to PS2 and games like tony hawk underground look noticeably cleaner on Xbox. It's that internal res and filter that work so well. PS2 has a sharpness edge but Xbox retains so many details and smoothness in the image even under the worst circumstances.
>>12343971>use a VCR as an RF modulatorDefinitely did that a bunch. Also played my NES on a Commodore 64 monitor via composite.
>>12342747It needed more 3rd party support and better 1st and 2nd party support.
>>12343007>the gaming audience in general was aging upeven kids wanted "mature" gamesthat was the general sentiment at the timeI remember conversations about this at school, how some kids said stuff like "yeah, I play videogames, but it's not the little cartoon characters for kids*, it's realistic shooters and sports games" and etc.*they were, in fact, kidsin contrast, I remember my older brother completely ignoring mature games and happily playing nintendo games through his late teens and early twenties still. he was the one who bought us a gamecube, in fact. and I remember him very excitedly showing me that postage stamp size trailer for wind waker he got on ign, no hint of disgust for how kiddie it was
If 1,000,000 "nintendo bad" threads get made on this website this year I have it on good authority that Nintendo is going to dissolve the company and refund all purchases dating back to the 80s. Keep it up guys I need this!
>>12343007cooler older kids were influencing the younger kids to dislike the shit the older kids were growing out of. back in 1993 there was nobody but aged uncs who could tell you smb1 was lame, and he wouldn't because everything was a technical marvel at the time.
>>12344226That's typical though. When you're a kid, you wanna look mature, so you gravitate towards more "mature"-looking games. When you get older, you start to realize that that's bullshit, and you just play what you like, even if it looks kiddie.
>>12342747Sony figured people that played video games as kids would have grown up and want a more adult console and watch dvds. Nintendo kept selling for kids.
>>12343852How much did it cost you to get all three consoles back then? I'm guessing you got gamecube last when it was like $99 or less?
>>12344349Yeah, that was the second Gamcube I owned. Got the XBox off ebay rather cheap, around $100 iirc. PS2 I got full price a year after launch. Was the first machine of the 3 I got. And that Dreamcast was like the 3rd one I owned, got it at a local game shop for like $20. And of course like an idiot I got rid of everything in that photo.
>>12344226Ironically when i only had Xbox has a tween, even while playing games like GTA or Halo i was lowkey jealous of how the Gamecube and PS2 libraries had far more colorful japanese kids games and mascot platformers. I must have played the shit out of Blinx and Rayman 3 more than i did Splinter Cell or Riddick.
>>12344349NTA, but I had a Dreamcast, PS2, GC, and an XBOX while all were still current. The first three I got on the year of their respective releases, XBOX was maybe mid to late 2002 or more likely 2003. The first three were at retail price, the XBOX might have been on sale. I was already a big retrofag, and in 2002/2003 I was as (probably more) focused on ordering old imports. That's not to say I (read: my parents) didn't buy new games, but my XBOX library in particular was pretty thin, and GC was mostly the big first party titles (and REmake).
>>12343858Best friends!
>>12342747wind waker killed the cube, nuff said
>>12345246how could wind waker kill the cube when OoT didn't save the N64?
>>12345703OoT sold alot of n64 consoles
>>12343025This really sums it up honestly.A growing segment of teens/young adults were no longer the target audience, stuff like FFX and MGS were much bigger draws for them, and even older kids aged like 12-14 started wanting to play GTA.Kids ages 8-12 thought stuff like Ratchet & Clank was cooler.Toddlers were easily entertained with Disney/Dreamworks tie-in shovelware.Nintendo completely lost their audience.
>>12342747>What went wrong here?People are too stupid and superficial to understand anything but caveman level of first glance ADD.GameCube still the best system ever.
>>12345703OoT single-handedly "saved" the 64 in Japan at least. I put "saved" in quotation marks because at that point it was simply impossible to catch up to the PS1 but it still sold literal millions of consoles all by itself.
>>12345828Saturn beat the N64 in Japan
>>12347158Mario 64 on DS (1 game) outsold the Saturn as a console. To say that the N64 didn't win... Well, it's actually quite silly.
>>12342827>SunshineAgreed>Wind WakerDebatable, the art style was controversial and I personally prefer the N64 Zeldas, but I don’t think it’s a bad game>Double DashNah, DD is better than MK64>F-ZeroI don’t think I’ve ever seen someone call GX bad>StarfoxAgreed
>>12342747they got btfo by the rise of online gaming for consoles, which at the time was huge since it was the first time you had decent multiplayer service that didn't need someone in the same room as you with another controller
>>12347279He's correct. Saturn beat the N64 in Japan by 200000 units approximately. What does DS have to do with anything in this context? Are you retarded by nature or are you training to achieve this kind of performance?
>>12347997Mario 64 was an N64 game. Its sales on DS still count as N64 sales.
>>12344237You got it boss
>>12343852not bad at all
>>12342826It also highlights how their imaginarium had been selectively curtailed to resonate with mainstream consumer habits and one-dimensional thought. As in, nothing matters except the commercial success, which they proudly take as self-affirmations. And to confront these, means navigating through a deep personal despair and shame, which most (understandably) don't want to.Which is why nostalgia and gaming shows often take the form of consumer products and advertising for the earlier....Wow, i just blacked out there for a second. What happened? Why is this text here? What does it mean?
I ended up getting a gamecube for free. My friend's teacher gave him one. I don't know why. It didn't have a power supply, controller, or video cable but somehow I sourced all that for free too. I can't remember how. I bought a few games for it, rented more and even owned the action replay for it. My xbox got way more use though because it was softmodded and I could pirate/run homebrew.
>>12350934What it means is that buisness nerds don't care about games as much as gamers do
>>12342809>brandwarrior still upset about halo 30 years laterlol. Lmao, even.
>>12343985Classic, also means you can record gameplay
>>12342747retarded sheeple buy expensive things more because of perceived higher quality, that's why the switch still flies off shelves at whatever price ninty makes up
>>12355202I bought a Switch because after hacking it I can emulate anything plus play pirated Switch games on it. It actually is a great product.
>>12342801yeup this is it. ps2 and xbox were my one-two combo. played my japanese vidya on ps2, western vidya on xbox. ps2 was my dvd machine, xbox for online play. i get super nostalgic thinking about playing halo 2 with the boys then watching j-horror with my siblings. great times.
>>12342801why not a PC for online and those 2000s games then?
>>12348013And squanix title count as?
>>12342747>PS2 had a head start like PS1 had over N64.>PS1 was the best selling console of all time then.>PS2 was backwards compatible with it's titles and accessories.>PS2 was the cheapest DVD player you could get at around that time.>Nintendo was seen as a more "childish" brand and being edgy was big then.>DVDs were better than mini DVDs just like CDs were better than cartridges before.Sony just did most things right while Nintendo did a lot of wrong.
They fucked up by not sticking with cartridges.
>>12356119lol no that would have just made things that much worse, the required storage was not cheap enough back then
>>12356119>>12356539should've gone by post
