Which had the better DVD player?
>>
ps2 didnt require you to buy a remote
>>
>>12343334
Yeah but I mean the quality of the player and the picture it outputs. The remotes are like $10 now.
>>
>>12343336
Why are you asking a question you've already made up your mind on? A large number of consumers were satisfied with a working DVD player.
>>
>>12343339
I haven't? Are you retarded? If PS2 has better picture quality then I go with that, if XBOX is better I go with that. I have a CRT and want what's best. I'm just saying I don't care if I have to buy a cheap remote if the experience is better.
>>
Why are cubies always so butthurt and passive aggressive at their consoles being gimped to save Nintendo some pennies?
>>
>>12343340
just get a dedicated player then
>>
>>12343379
No one mentioned the cube
>>
Go for the PS2 if you’re a normie, but choose the Xbox if you know how the cookie crumbles. A softmodded Xbox can even play 720p video.

I only have 9 inputs available, all of which are taken up.

Crazy how Nintendo and Microsoft were desperate and tried to push DVD in hopes of catching up with the PS2.
The Xbox was widely advertised alongside the DVD addon, and Nintendo went to great lengths with Panasonic to release a completely new version of the console
Fucking pathetic.
>>
>>12343339
You could easily answer yourself if you were willing to put in the work of learning, the fact you didn't bother means you're not going to want to wrestle with custom software to get the best result either.
>>
>>12343431
They really should have advertised their graphical superiority to the PS2 instead. I don't know why they never did.
>>
Playstation 2 is technically a great DVD player, technically speaking. It will handle 'stress test' DVDs well. I used to have a bookmark to some site with a detailed rundown somewhere.

Ironically there used to be a lot of work done by DVD manufacturers to compete with each other by trying to enhance the picture. Some techniques used in the older days were geometrically mapping the output to 10- or 12- or more bits, advanced signal processing, none of that is really done any more, everybody uses one of a handful of SoC DVD chips.

I have some older DVD players, high end ones, and they absolutely blow away new DVD players. Which are mostly little light as air things 1/4 the size of a proper A/V component these days until you get into the $$ range.

I love this image because it reminds me of Christmas 01 when I got a ps2, DMC and GTA 3. The year i got an n64 with OOT and Shadows of the empire is tied as favorite childhood christmas.
>>
>>12343330
Probably Xbox. Never used it though, because you had to buy a stupid remote that took up a controller slot. PS2 worked just fine for me, and the picture quality was more than acceptable.
>>
>>12343393
What kind of setup are you running? If you're daisy-chaining RCA splitters, you're going to have shit picture quality regardless.

>>
>>12343330
Like 1% of people had access to Xbox's DVD capacity.
>>
>>12343330
XBOX, purely because of XBMC. But the stock DVD player was also pretty premium for the time.
>>
Xbox simply because the ps2's video output is goddamned horrible.
>>
dont kill your already dying hardware by playing dvds on them.

>What kind of setup are you running?

Consoles>gcomp switch>amazon switch>splitter. Audio through receiver.

All on component. Picture is still solid.

Unless you mod the console, doesn't need the remote anymore.

PS2 drives were more reliable for sure.
Almost all Xbox DVD drives were of terrible quality, and the ones that were good are rare. Surprised no one has said that yet.
On the other hand, Xbox was a great streaming box. I used to watch live TV on mine with XBMC and Navi-X. It could handle 480p streams perfectly fine.

I choose XBOX because it plays DVD movies via RGB scart without any problems.

For some reason, PS2 has some kind of Macrovision copy protection that prevents RGB-scart from being used with movies. Separate component cables apparently works just as fine as composite cables, but my CRT only has scart

Beat me to it
Though I just use a 360 for streaming video as it can also downscale

Xbox
>Requires buying a separate dongle and remote because Microdongs were too cheap to include the DVD player license fee with the console
>DVD drive tends to break
PS2
>Can be used with a regular controller
>Composite out is kinda shit
>Has copy protection that turns the image green if you use RGB output
Xbox wins because it has better composite video out AND doesn't puke all over the screen if you use RGB.
>>12344626
>dont kill your already dying hardware by playing dvds on them.
The disc drive was made to play DVDs. Better to have it die from serving its purpose than letting it rot, never to be used again.

Dude what?
You know component exists too right?

>Has copy protection that turns the image green if you use RGB output
That's so easily sidesteppable with FMCB and an updated DVD player executable that it's not even an issue
>>
The xbox could be softmodded. I did not care one fucking bit about playing actual DVDs. I was already pirating everything as a teenager in the early 2000s. Before the softmod the IR sensor/Remote DVD playback kit for the xbox would have been pointless for me. I primarily watched burned SVCDs on my Koch DVD player. The xbox DVD player has no support for that. But once xbmc entered my life that changed. I could stop downloading SVCDs and start getting XviDs instead. I'm talking about 6 avi movies on a single DVD. Game changer. This was before DVD players supporting that made by companies like Phillips were common and cheap Chinese units could do it later in the decade. Not to mention the ability to play back porno asf and wmv files from paysites I used hacked passwords to access. I couldn't beat off in front of the family computer but I could do it in my bedroom where I had privacy.

With all that said I did use it as a real DVD player on a few occasions using the cracked version of the player that lets you use a controller as a remote. I watched stuff like my Aqua Teen Hunger Force boxsets on it. So it still wins as a DVD player for me.

If it's a PS2 it depends on your model. If your model is prone to the mechacon crash issues you can mod it to fix that. If it's a xbox just use xbmc and play shit off the hard drive. If you must play back your favorite DVDs on it at least know replacing the drive is going to be easier than dealing with all the other problems like recapping the bitch.
>>
2 years after purchase, I tried watching movies on my ps2 after learning that it plays dvd movies. Lots of freezing and skipping.
Definitely not ideal for movies, as my dvd player and PC dvd drive would play normally even the scratched discs.
Maybe a new PS2 could do the job.
>>
I lik the ps2 I member my furst DVD still played in black and white not so easy it seems eh
>>
Is there a techncial reason why some DVD players are "better" than others? Like why do some players play scratched CDs or DVDs or burned discs better than others? Like a PC drive can play pretty much anything, but with commercial players and consoles it's up in the air.

people dog on the Xbox needing a remote but having to use a dualshock to control dvd playback sucked

Yeah there are a lot of factors at play. Not just with DVDs. The best drives for reading scratched discs are actually all ancient and use the old Philips CDM mechanisms, the laser travels along a curved path so there is less of an angular change when the laser sled steps. It also uses a beam splitter and the laser shines on the track from both straight-on and at a 45 degree angle from each side, then the three beams (from one laser) are re-joined in a prism so a speck of dust or scratch that might block one, can be read by the others. This mechanism was way too expensive to produce so they did away with it eventually. It's built of solid brass and steel and uses magnetic levitation for the swingarm so there's no wear and no contact between moving parts, motor is direct drive so there's no gearing. These mechanisms were always paired with a powerful gas tube laser, not some chip laser. So it could read right through. I have an old B&O CD player from the '80s and it will read discs that completely stump other players. It also, unlike some players, has a muting circuit so if there is an unplayable sample it outputs silence for that sample rather than glitching, so you will never actually even hear the glitch.

As time went on the main game was how to produce a cheaper mechanism, you couldn't sell this five pound hunk of space age technology at the mass consumer level and have it be profitable.

Anyway the lower end units will have a shittier drive, usually the laser sled / pickup rides on a couple little wire-thin rods on a nylon gearset. That sucks.

I did it on my xbox and I lived. I had better things to spend $30 on than a DVD playback kit. Like a spindle of DVD-Rs so I could burn more movies, games, and porn.
>>
Can we also ask here what console has the best media player for CRTs?
>>
>>12354095
It's pretty hard to beat XBMC on the original xbox. But that's only if you're sticking with that gen. A lot of SD content you could acquire on the internet these days and might wish to watch on a CRT might be encoded with H264, HEVC, or something else. You need more modern hardware to cope with that. If I remember correctly I did play the SD HDTV scene rips on a Wii. PS3 or 360 will handle them perfectly too. So with that gen you cap out at H264.
