Melee Mario is so fun.>>12344232it's Wife, veteran Peach player.
>>12343879Some of the undergrads at my university have kept a Gamecube (now modded Wii) around for years and still play Melee casually. When I first saw guys playing I asked if they went to any locals and they had no clue what I meant, which was a little disappointing, but still cool to see people enjoying it. Later I met a couple undergrads taking it seriously, one of which really wanted to beat me for a while; neither one has taken a game on me yet if I remember right.Every now and then I have the urge to start a weekend thread to play some /vr/ anons on Slippi, but I think I've given that idea up for just attending locals.>>12343967>"Fuckass!">"What the fuck man!"Nice.I was watching this Link v. Falco match earlier:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaHlPC10C2YThere's a video of this Link player going up against the one-time best Link in Canada, maybe the world, but after the latter had switched to Falco.
>>12344352I'd like to play with /vr/ but I'm SA so the connection wouldn't be great.
>>12344352I main Link, and I sometimes hop onto Slippi, but I soon tire of matching up against hordes of tryhard space furfags. Sometimes I manage to beat them, but those matchups are rarely fun for me. I cherish every time I go up against a Marth, though. I always do well against him, and I wasn't surprised to learn that Link is considered a good counterpick for that matchup.
>>12343879I don't like playing this game with my friends because I get a raging hard-on whenever one of them chooses Peach.
>>12344778I'm a Link player too. A few weeks back I lost to a Fox at a local and I swear every stock was me being shine-stunned across the stage until he had me at kill%. Must have been Final Destination. That was pretty frustrating, but it does make me appreciate that there's the whole dynamic of playing to avoid certain traps. Certain combos from Falco feel almost as bad. Can't say I hate playing against either character though (and I didn't feel so bad once that Fox won that night's tournament; spoke to him on the way home too).On the positive side, I remember that going off the ledge versus Sheik or Marth was a death sentence for me. Eventually I learned to move around them and recover, but it was painful for a long time. On Friday night I took my first ever games against a local Marth player and a Sheik player, though both were still 2-1 in the end.My main pain with Slippi are the quitters who ditch once they see a Link. Quitting after one game also leaves me salty, but I'm willing to wade through it all to find someone good who'll play a dozen tight matches.
Switched to ganon years ago when my old hands couldn't falcon anymore. Love playing dorf.I miss the pre-2020 community
>>12343879Zelda is pointless in smellee. It's all about sheik baby
>>12343975would fix the poor guy
>play single player>the amount of cheap horseshit is legendaryYou could seriously make a drinking game out of all the times an exploding capsule spawns inside your attack, or a bob-omb walks into you from offscreen, or even a crate/barrel spawning on you and dealing 20% damage because you were on a slope. That's not even saying anything about how bullshit Hard/Very Hard is with how little knockback you deal.
>>12343879>Tied with SSE for best adventure mode>Last game with unique individual break the targets, and board the platforms >Introduces crazy hand and giga bowser>Fastest pace>Peach bloomersYeah, definitely one of my favorites, tied with 3DS
>>12343879I really like the Ness and Fire Emblem victory themes. All the Melee ones sound nice.https://www.ssbwiki.com/Victory_themeThe victory themes ever since Brawl are complete downgrades. They seemingly got rid of the live orchestra, yet the MIDI music or whatever they're doing sounds so weak compared to Smash 64.
>>12344819>getting shine stun lockedthis is actually very easy to get out of, you just need to use ASDI, simply hold the c stick left or right once he starts doing it and youll get out of it quickly.
>peach main stuck forever in gold 2/3feels bad man. diamond players straight up rape me unless theyre playing falco or meme characters. peach is fucking shit against literally every top tier besides bird and requires a god like jump to compete on the next level that Im never going to acquire despite playing this game a jillion hours since launch. and Im too unc-brained and set in my ways to choose a different main now
>>12345452One of the wireframe event matches menaced me because of shit like bombs dropping directly onto me. The random order of All-Star mode is also annoying, since you can get very favourable or unfavourable sets of stages and characters.>>12345509Thanks a ton, I was starting to think I was screwed.

>>12346642>>12346814They all play the goddamn same, too. It's part of why I play Link - you can play him a variety of ways, and you can switch up his approach on the fly.
>>12346838>Melee LinkI've always hated how his up/side smashes work. fucking hate multihit smashes unless it's Dorf's upsmash.
The Crazy Hand and Mew trophies are literally all I need left but Hard Mode is so fucking miserable to play
>>12347148Adventure Mode on Hard is so miserable>Mario and Peach just gangbang you in this tiny stage with nowhere good to fight>on Hard the shitty Team fights have a ton of knockback resist>everything about Pokemon Stadium just bends you over and fucks you>Corneria pitting you against the faggiest characters to ever exist, the second fight having a shitload of Arwing spam>Onett with triple Ness that constantly throw Mr Saturns>Metal Mario Bros that never die and gangbang you
>>12346308You wait 'em out. Let them come to you, and I know Luigi will easily SD off the void traps. If you play enough it's the SD quirks that help the most, since you can bait them towards hazards instead of risking damage, which can be guaranteed if you know exactly how the computer will behave. The main thing in All-Star Mode is not taking damage.Link v. Bowser for instance, if you face him solo on Yoshi's Island, move forward onto the blocks, tether and throw him down, then he'll throw out whatever move his downwards shell-spin is, and send him straight into the void. You can end that match with zero damage in under three seconds that way.>>12346842The second hit on the side-smash can be a nice way to mix things up, while the up-smash ends very quickly and can cover a lot of the surface on smaller platforms. I'd really like to be able to do consistent side- and up-tilts though, especially the up-tilt given how much it covers above your head (though I wouldn't be surprised if a Falcon/Fox drill still goes through).
I still say the most fun you can have with Melee is CPU vs CPU fights because when no humans are involved, true dumbassery comes out.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJWONQ-i86U
An interesting and intelligent Melee thread without trolling? On MY /vr/?
I need to get used to no buffer, and her weird UpB angles.
I don't know anything about competitive Melee but I still enjoy it so, so much on a casual level. Every so often I just go and erase my file, and unlock everything again. Last time I accidentally unlocked Marth and Roy first.
I hope the guy that decided 1P Mode had different controls than Vs Mode got lynched.
>>12347409this is genuinely the worst thing about melee, and i can't even remember the specifics of what or why. i just remember beating all game modes with all characters was so fucking stupid because there was a difference in c-stick controls
>>12347409>>12347412I still don't use the c-stick because of this.
>>12347409>>12347412Simply put, it's because the C-Stick was, like the N64 C-Buttons before it, conceived as a camera control device above all. It served its real intended purpose in the 1 player mode, but it would cause problems if it did the same in multiplayer, so they relegated it to insta-Smash attack and aerial attack duty instead just to have it do something. Funny to think how it was probably an afterthought that is now considered essential.
>>12347447The C-stick also overrides the ASDI of the analog stick, which is a really weirdly complex thing to put into a children's party game.
>>12347234the shitcube tranner lover schizo must have had a stroke.
>>12343967It looked way more fun back then than now. The scene is actually disgusting. Utterly corporate and hollow.
>>12344856Same bro. COVID did a number on the smash community in particular. Its a fucking wreck.
>>12344789I get it, man. I really wanna fuck Peach in the ass, too.
>be donkey kong fan>try to play him and get fucking assblasted>get matched against DK>they can somehow make him workI JUST DONT FUCKING GET IT WHY CANT I DO IT TOO
>>12347828I ran into that 13-year-old donkey kong kid on ranked and he completely shit stomped me
L-cancelling is a fucking terrible mechanic.
>>12347828in a 1 on 1, only one emerges as the king of kong
>>12347867when I first learned it I really enjoyed it cause it felt really satisfying to pull off and get rewarded with a better combo. but now that Ive gotten used to it i hate it because it only matters now when you miss one. theres no reason to ever not use it so its just a pointless timing check for every last one of your aerials and doesnt actually add anything to the game.
Before aMSa, there was Fumi https://youtu.be/0cluKpdlXY4
>>12344875Sheik is a very solid character. I just don't understand the point of his B-Down move which transforms you into a real woman. It's more like a tactically useless extra taunt button. Reminds me of the Animalities in the MK franchise
>>12349143Considering "shiek's down b is the worst in the game" has been a running meme for as long as the game exists, it is pretty pointless
Playing as Bowser feels like you're trying to fight in a dream, since everything he does is so slow and hard to hit with. They really went out of their way to make him as shitty as possible in every way. He even throws items slower than everybody else.Fucker doesn't even have a run animation and uses stock SFX for his "voice"
>>12349373At least he CAN hit hard. Kirby is the total joke of the game. No doubt he was nerfed hard due to how stupidly good he was in Smash 64, but Sakurai way overcorrected (as he tends to do - there seems to be no middle ground with the guy). I remember even when I first played Melee at launch, I was so disappointed with how shitty Kirby seemed to be.
>>12344789ThisI never thought she was hot until melee (forward A attack)
>>12344875She's fun desu, I do like playing Sheik but I think Zelda is more enjoyable to use even if she's super sluggish and her moves dont work half the time.
>>12349373His B-Up out of shield is a handy counter
>>12349454>get thrown by kirby next to a ledge>kirby dies while i go unharmedI dont understand how you fail to code a throw like that.Speaking of poorly coded moves, the fuck is up with Falcon's jab? It's straight up impossible to not do the utterly dogshit TUTUTUTUTU jabs unless you look up some autist's guide on how to avoid it.
>>12349373The Koopa Klaw is so much fun. He's my favorite.
I think my actual most hated thing about Melee is how they locked a stage behind 15-minute Melee. I refuse to believe anybody with more than a single digit IQ could enjoy this mode, let alone think it's acceptable to lock content behind. It's pretty much just a matter of "DK down B and hope a bomb doesn't spawn on you for 15 mins straight" or "master hand glitch"
>>12349373he has the best <100% ledge attack in the game howeverbeit.
>>12349610>he cant gentlemanKWAB
the worst part about melee are all of the characters with a fucking 2 frame short hop window. TWO FRAMES. IN A 60 FPS GAME. TO DO ONE OF THE MOST BASIC AND ESSENTIAL ACTIONS
>>12349974filtered
>>12349373I honestly think Bowser is a bit better than Kirby, he has a decent fair, sideb is alright, upb oos is good, ledge attack is actually good (the pre-100% one that is) and a very strong upair.I honestly can't say much positive things about Melee Kirby besides upair being strong and his down throw tech-chases.
>>12347228
>>12345516>Link main stuck scratching the bottom of Gold 2Peach is a problem for me, so if this thread is still up come the weekend and you wanna play some friendlies to grind on your jump, I can post my Slippi code. Would be some slowass games though.
>>12351515kirby has a great back air but thats literally it. bowser fair is more than decent, its good. sidetilt and uptilt are good too. bair comes out fast and is useful. bowsers issues arent so much his moveset and more about having a super slow jumpsquat, a huge hitbox and awful recovery. this guy is probably the best bowser and hes gotten a game off hungrybox:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CmnGVSinJU
>>12351654I play against Loadspiller and Smash Papi's Bowser on ranked occasionally and they're definitely way better than any Kirby I've ever played. Kirby is so ass you can just mindlessly trade with him any you'll win, but Bowser lives so long you have to actually use your brain a little. If you do use your brain it's hopeless for Bowser too though.

Any east coast anons here that'll be on Slippi this weekend?
There's this new debate going on about Z-Jump and custom controllers (including b0xxes).I'm kinda surprised it is allowed considering how puritan Melee players are (outside using UCF).

>>12347228for a real cpu battle you add pokeballs. and giant melee for extra fun.https://youtu.be/IPn_sIK7MPohttps://youtu.be/-JAXGKyHEOQhttps://youtu.be/oxaAZ92FhAg
>>12355027Box controllers kind of got forced through by Hax being popular and not being able to use a normal controller, and then during the pandemic controller mods went crazy with the justification "If boxes can do it it's okay". There wasn't even a real ruleset until last year.
>>12351582sure anon Im down but my hours are pretty weird cause Im totally nocturnal. I like the matchup, and its not bad for link cause you have a strong vertical kill with dair which is peach's biggest weakness
>>12355027its literally a completely different game now with modern cheatsticks and boxes. this is the only reason why faggots like zain and ibangdadswife have rose to prominence, they are controller babbies that wouldnt be nearly as good in the older eras before the cheatsticks. with stuff like perfect ez dashbacks and ez shield drops which buff marth a crazy amount, and then you have notches and z jump which make fox way better, so literally the 2 best characters in the game get dis-proportionally better with all the new controller tech compared to the rest of the cast. and thats not even getting into the box bullshit like perfect 1.0 cardinals, though I believe hax eventually nerfed that and other things about the boxx to make it more fair. boxes really arent the issue imo, nobody actuallys wins anything on a box controller, but goomwaves/phobs are insane and absolutely a requirement to seriously compete now. in a perfect world it would be stock OEMs only in tournament, but that is shitty too since theyre very much not made equal and it can be ridiculously hard finding a good one that only gets harder over time. but we definitively went too far in the other direction
>>12343879A slightly off-topic remark. Melee and Quake 3 are alike in that models and textures have just the right amount of detail: not so low that it does not properly resemble conventional depictions of those characters and locations, yet not so high as to make the game look visually noisy.Brawl's semi-photorealistic style is interesting, but not that good overall. All Smash titles after Melee simply look too visually noisy. Also compare the health indicator in Melee with those in subsequent titles. Melee's just has the percentage on top of the character's icon, with the character's head shown in the stock icons. Brawl's states the name and has a picture of the character.
>>12343879Why did they say "GAME SET!!" in N64 Smash but change it to "GAME!!" in Melee?Did it sound too much like "GAY SEX!!"? Does that really justify the change? That's gay imo because I figured that was about as an intentional if a joke as "SO LONG, GAY BOWSER!" was. It should not have been removed
https://youtu.be/K27QB6n78vg
>>12355451>modern cheatsticksWhat's actually different about them? Notches I understand, but how are sticks themselves augmented?
>>12356052notches lets you get perfect firefox and wavedash angles with 0 skill involved. z jumpallows you to remap a jump button to z which makes a LOT of tech much easier to do. you can cut the springs in the shouler triggers to make them faster to press. and thats just the physical mods. goomwaves and phobs have programmable motherboards that let you do all kinds of shit. expanding the range for 1.0 cardinals. no fastfall on ledge drops. bigger shield drop angles. gauranteed dashback out of crouch. faster pivots, easier up tilts. you can literally program any macro you want and youd get away with it unless you had some insanely thorough TO who gave a shit, which doesnt exist.
>>12343884you can see
>>12358114>that ping spike when landing on Randalouchotherwise nice
>been playing on and off (mostly off) for ten years>still played quite a bit, grinded out tech over the years and can l cancel, shield drop, moonwalk, ledgedash, etc. consistently>played a good amount of matches on unranked, starting several years ago and have been playing my main Ganon for a few years now, feel comfortable with him>recently returned to start playing again, decided to give ranked a try>i got placed in silverDamn… the truth hurts man. I didn’t think I was great at the game, or that I could make top four at locals or anything like that, but silver hurts, after all this time. I guess I’m just trash and will always be trash
>>12358262Don't feel bad just because you have a life while there's a whole bunch of dudes who spend hours and hours tryharding at Melee and nothing else.
>>12358262there are people who've played longer than you and would place sub-bronze and fancy themselves a fighting game aficionado. don't sweat it
I really need to practice her Up B angles, I die too much from failing to reach the ledge or getting bonked by it.
>>12358324just master her down b first, you will get much better at the game.
>>12358330>just stop having funtourneyfags ruined melee
>>12358262Do you still need to pay for ranked?
>>12358262Painful, but it's not like Melee is easy. A guy at a local, who's been attending way longer than me, probably for years, told me his main aim is to not be free for the guys ahead of him. It's still rewarding to be good enough that guys better than you---even if you're destined to go 3-0 or 2-1---have to be careful and think a bit when they face you. This same guy has had his share of upsets. Also remember winning a match is about good choices too, and all the tech in the world won't do you any good if you make the wrong moves.>>12358369You can, but it's free every fourth day.
>>12358351it's just japes, ha ha!
>>12358330Funny.
>>12358262Im right there with you, have played probably thousands of hours since launch, got initially placed into silver 2, crept up to gold 3 but got pretty walled at that point. was painful at first but I just accept Im a fucking scrub now and no amount of practice or tech grind is going to change that. also I stick to unranked to keep my rage minimal.I think a big issue people like us can have (very much including me) is defensive tech. we tend to focus on movement but DI and SDI is so important and way more complex than just shoving the control stick away from knockback. I didnt really fucking understand how it all worked until a few months ago and Im still totally shit at it, getting good SDI requires godly reflexes.
>>12358369I dont even like paying ranked but I still pay the $5/month sub just to support slippi. its such an incredibly smooth service and if it goes down Ill lose my most played multiplayer game, as i no longer have friends and Im sure as hell not about to travel to some sweaty smelly troon-filled local.
>>12358324you play as a girl?
>>12355698I’m guessing it’s some weird Japanese thing (Game, Set, Match (like in tennis) is a common English phrase to mean a competition is over, Japs probably thought it sounded cool). If you switch the language to Japanese they still say Game Set when a match finishes.
>>12358307>>12358318>>12358580>>12358885You know I was definitely excepting to check back in to being laughed at and berated but you guys are really cool and supportive, thank you. For all the outsiders’ talk about how melee is “filled with creeps” or whatever, this community has had a disproportionate amount of well-adjusted, good mannered, and even good looking people compared to other scenes I’ve been a part of, at least in my experience. You guys are cool
