basically the original flight sim for the Super Nintendo, it's not the very first sim ever because i probably had one on MS-DOS. This is the one from SNES that most of you probably remember, and it's a 1991 launch game.
the whole point of Pilotwings is to fly planes, skydive, Rocket Belt jet packs, hang glide and eventually they make you fly attack helicopters on two bonus rescue/combat missions where you get shot at.
you go through four instructors and they don't really instruct you on anything. Tony, Shirley, Lance and Al are basically just there to tell you if you did good or not on the event.
>>
Pilotwings is the only game that's good that you fly through rings, the other game that people think about flying through rings is Superman 64, which sucked. and it always sucked, even back then it sucked. like i don't remember anyone ever saying Superman 64 was good, even back in the day.
>>
I played this exactly once for probably 20 minutes

Pilotwings was great. I guess it started out as a mode 7 demo and evolved into its own game.

Can you just fly and explore the world in 64? Without timer or mission?

Tech demos make the best games.

There are photos of Dragonfly (the game's name very early on the SNES development) which shows it was an action oriented game, a shooter. Maybe they changed focus to differentiate it from other games while having more time after Nintendo delayed the SNES.

wrong and retarded
Norman Rockwell can fuck off

Jumping on the little domes with the jetpack was awesome. I also like that it turns into a military operation as the final challenge of the game

Shirley's shocked snake eyes look was always kind of weird too
>>

How do I not fail miserably at hang-gliding in this game?
>>
>>12345115
That's a shame. I played it for hours with my friends. A lot of these games are way, way more fun playing them with friends. Especially the rocketpack, we'd laugh our asses off when the dude would crater.

>>12345069
I grew up on early computer flightsims too but Pilotwings was still a joy to see. Man, the early SNES titles were an EVENT. Everything really felt like you were taking part in an evolution of gaming and it was a joy just to participate.

Absolutely based. Grew up watching demo scene demos on atari/amiga and playing experimental coverdisk games haha, great shit

it's different than flying the plane. it takes a light touch and you can't gain altitude without finding a thermal current. with the plane you can just increase the throttle but with the hang glider you need to try to maintain your altitude by not altering your course too much.

finding and using the thermal currents (updrafts) is a challenge in itself and they are key to winning those missions. they blow you upward rapidly (gaining altitude). i remember having to circle around a lot and use them over and over.

I hate the "bad game is bad and I am unskilled at games" video entertainment content. If you're going to call a game bad, at least demonstrate some skill in being able to beat the first level.

If they were making the same video about pilotwings they would repeatedly crash on takeoff and then curse while getting brown slime thrown in their face.

>superman64 is bad
Never played it, maybe you are correct. Pilotwings and Pilotwings64 are amazingly good games. And they are much worse flight simulators compared to the Sierra Aces series on DOS. (Aces over Europe, Aces of the Pacific, Red Baron, A-10 Warthog) plus the excellent Falcon series.
>>
>>12347008
>hang-gliding
You want to keep an efficient glide ratio and use gentle turns and updrafts. Turning loses altitude, keep the most efficient speed.

This is actually a great multiplayer game in the sense that you get a friend or two, a few beers and pass the controller back and forth trying to beat the challenges. Also I love the lo-fi jazz music. Great stuff.
