It's time for Wednesday Night Wipeout!
Come play some SRB2Kart!

How to join (The short and easy way):
Download the All-in-one repack: https://mega.nz/file/3dUUWTbR#Ir3l9U2JAKSdT84wQwbKsgQ1Go39xdCCznpF2ChCgmc
Extract it to its own folder (NOT the desktop or program files)
Run "SRB2Kart-Neptune (Connect to vrkart).bat" and wait for any missing files to download in-game
DO NOT run "srb2kart.exe" and expect to be able to join the server.
If you don't have a 64-bit machine/OS for whatever reason: Copy the contents of the 32-bit folder into the main folder

How to join (The longer and harder way):
Download version 1.6 of the game: https://github.com/STJr/Kart-Public/releases/download/v1.6/srb2kart-v16-Installer.exe
Get the custom client we use: https://codeberg.org/NepDisk/srb2k-neptune/releases/tag/Neptune2.5.1
Get the mods either automatically in-game or at: https://macgu.fun/repo/srb2kart/
Connect to macgu.fun (either use connect in console or "specify ipv4 address" under Multiplayer)

>I HAVE TO BITCH FAST AND TEXT CHAT TOO SLOW
We also have a Mumble server!
Address: 51.161.34.159
Port: default
Password: endoom

>I heard this game supports proximity chat, are we using that?
No.

Pro tips: https://pastebin.com/YV6biqxq

Ranger stood over the dead fiend, with nails churning above him. His thunderbolt was spent, his bloodied arm throbbing with pain. All he had left was 10 HP and a bag full of rockets. He quivered with determination. "None of this would have happened," he panted, "if only the government hadn't funded the slipgate program!". He used the column in the lift for support. "We really should stop directing taxes towards the military-industrial complex, and instead use it to fund women's shelters!"
Little did he know, a zombie had teleported in right behind the column, and had heard him. "Think of the applicatioooons...!" it said. He was startled. "We could sooolve logiiistiiics" it continued. But the ranger was having none of it. He simply lobbed a grenade to the offending monster.
But while he was distracted, the wall behind him was opening - this was it. A huge chunk of the wall, caving in. As he turned around to see what it was, he saw them: two vores. "We're gay!", they said, "We won't let you eat our runic cake! We had to sue for them to bake it for us!". He had his rocket launcher at the ready. "Consider this..." he said, while putting on some sunglasses, "...a redistribution" and he bombed them while ducking in and out of cover. His rockets had the trans-gay-black-intersexual flag painted on it.
"Oh, noo!" they said, "you're doing a hecking Palestine!"
This was crucial... at this moment... everything he believed in... his ability to derive value to the shareholders... his necesity to do so in a PR-approved manner... but this couldn't be... there had to be a way for the analogy to not hold... it couldn't be...
"Oh, no, have I been the evil guy all along?" he said.
"Yesss, join us!"
"NO!" he said, and delivered the final blow. "I won't accept this!" and the vores were dead. "Trans rights are human rights!" they said, while they died. Ranger took the rune. There were two more to go, but would he get them in time before Russia invaded the eldritch dimension?

Doomguy shot the zombieman who fell down to his death. A zombie dying, is it possible? Then Doomguy dropped trou and penetrated the zombieman's anus with his penis, forcing itvpast the sphincter, and moved rhythmically back and forth until he ejaculated into the zombieman's intestines, rupturing them from the force of the semen. But Doomguy was not finished. As he went to a toilet and roundhouse kicked its basin shattering it and he reached his hand into the shattered toilet that sprayed piss and shit and blood. And he pulled out a shit and ate it and smeared it on his face and body then shrieked and punched a mirror and ran out and howled at an imp and punched its face in and skullfucked it while shouting "die, die" then ripped open its intestines and ate crap after crap in the imp's intestines until Doomguy was full and he shot himself in the head, he could die happy.

There are a few files included in the zip in order to run in dos, but as far as I can tell, sourceports only need PG-RAW.wad. Like most of the Perdition's Gate levels, this one is pretty short and monster dense. For those unaware, this wad was actually sold for money at some point. I think that's why it has some real good texture work for the 90s.
>>
>>12350963

It's so easy to get disoriented and lose sight where you're meant to go next, ruining an otherwise perfectly good run with time-consuming hesitations and missteps. Plus those cacodemons outside the windows are clearly meant as hazards, not to be killed.

Have to say, doing this is reminding me why I came to detest traditional demo recording. I'm full of anger and frustration now, after having to fight against my brain which really hates doing the same thing over and over again especially when it feels it was "successful" last time so now this problem is "solved" and it's being forced to waste energy which was what got my ancestors killed.

Thanks for listening to my complaints last thread and picking a wad I already knew, though. I just forgot how bloody frustating demo recording is

In general the tranny things are mostly confined to the less quakey maps (iirc that jam was more or less like qbj, as in it didn't have the medieval theming), now that I think about it. My point exactly. Also now that I remember there was a jam centered around "blue" and one of the maps, bm_quasiotter, was like a museum (no monsters). I remember the voiceover by the mapper but I usually play with no sound (listening to podcasts or such in the background) so I completely ignored that (maybe it was a tranny voice).
Going back to take this screenshot I saw that the end of the map talks about a whale being his fursona, which might be a joke but given the other message I doubt it.
It's fascinating that there is a pattern even in this. What is it with mood maps and these people?

They don't really like Quake for Quake - at least not beyond the fact that it has become very simple to map for post-Trenchbroom.
They're attracted to Quake because it has an established circlejerk of other mentally ill people who will praise their degenerate creations as high forms of art and keep them "safe" from having to see any form of criticism.

They don't even make fun gimmicky maps like "what if the player was as tiny as a rat and walked around in a giant kitchen lol".

So de_rats in Counter-Strike was hilarious because the map designer thought like the player. Rat-sized, sneaky, chaotic with every corner truly a surprise, and you could play by the ear all the angles available. That is the kind of playful lateral thinking missing from modern map communities of virtually fps game still being played. Now we have political retardation, and other modern trash holding back the player experience as pointed out ITT.

Something silly I guess
>John Ranger went and killed Shub, Armagon and unfucked the timeline as in canon
>Earth still got fucked pretty bad, but got plenty of arcane knowledge and tech from the dimensions John Ranger and the rest of the rangers tore through to stop Shub and friends
>some of the monsters (mostly ogres and knights) were enslaved and ally with human forces if only to help them through land they're unfamiliar with
>the plot is nothing fancy, just humans exploring and learning more about the worlds they discovered through the slipgates
>no multiverse bullshit, Quake 2 isn't part of the continuity, there's like 7 realms and some of them have a bunch of biomes in them
>some stuff from Arcane Dimensions shows up because to me that's Quake realized to its fullest

Still thinking about the protagonist desu, I think it'd be rad to have a cool and very athletic chick double jumping into a scrag and cleaving it in half with an axe

Not aiming for something dark and brooding, at least not all the time since the war's over for good. Think that one Lovecraft story about exploring Venus or something

You would need to go all out for that, assuming one follows a similar quest to Carter. There's so many types of characters and creatures that he interacts with that aren't just mindless monsters.

The map format is essentially flat, and volume and space is 'extruded' out of the level with height values to create the three dimensional world, with values assigned to all the lindefs and the sectors they make up.
Players and monsters also cannot intersect on the Y axis, they can't be above or underneath each other, along with monster melee attacks skipping to check for the Y axis also.

Heretic adds in that Y axis part, though you would need to write in some kind of support for more flexible map data. ZDoom family ports let you have room over room and other kinds of 3D model stuff, though the implementation is mildly hacky and has some limitations.

>>12351906
Either extreme is obviously unhealthy. Like having too much water or too much salt, either would kill you, so you must maintain some sort of balance.
>>
>>12351916
True. Carter barely talks so not too rough of a start.
>>
>>12351920
That's true, the map data is two-dimensional, but so are the maps for Build games and Star Wars Dark Forces. Those games all have room over room. I guess not having a Y axis is the issue, because you would be blocked by monsters in the room below you.
>>
666 minutes of /vr/ when?
>>
>>12351932
Those games do add more things to the map data, but also do other nifty trickery.
>>

>>12351956
In case it happens, what's a good site to set up a timer of sorts?
>>
>>12351948
I've tried poking around in level editors for Duke Nukem before, and there are a lot of tricks behind the scenes. Some of the room over room is faked with silent teleporters, like falling down the air vent at the beginning, but there are also a lot of overlapping sectors. In later Build games, such as Blood, it even allows you to render both sectors simultaneously. I know Build doesn't use BSP, but are there other differences in map data?
>>
>>12351964
Fuck if I know. I have a computer. It has a clock. It can count in nanoseconds! Shit, technology these days is amazing... anyway, the point is: why would I need a website?
>>
>>12351932
I think duke had world portals implemented natively (fuckery with the sectors, you could have any sector be contiguous to any other sector so it'd look like a world portal in-game iirc) so it seems pretty trivial to emulate room over room with that.
Doom I don't think it had something like that.

Playing on the easiest difficulty does that, too, so just don't. Also, don't put yourself into the trap of never saving on maps that aren't "classic Doom" sized. Even then, the Doom manual says to "save your game and save it often", then talks about how much a pistol start sucks, so just have fun.

>>
>>12352781
True. You can use spite as an accelerant to help get the artistic fire going, but if you also aren't loving what you're doing, you're gonna struggle to not have it all reduce back to embers.
>>
>>12352781
Speaking from experience, it led me to make many huge, elaborate and intricate maps and deleting most of them before I got to placing monsters since I realized no one would actually want to play them. Same goes to what few mods I made, at least three didn't see the light of day and the rest got scrubbed. There are better things for people to play and enjoy than what I made out of spite.

As pathetic as it sounds, I really don't know how to handle praise and whenever I get it, I feel a knife turn inside me because I suspect it's not just praise and there's something shady behind it. It's why I stopped using Doomworld and left a fair few Discord servers, I was always praised for just making bullshit and it made me sick to my stomach.

I don't think spite is a good fuel on its own. Some spite, sure, but in its entirety it just burns you out and leaves you hollow.

I like to try to exit a level with as good health and ammo as I can, but sometimes you don't get a lot of choice. I mostly play continuous with saves, but making my own levels made me appreciate Pistol Start play, and sometimes that's just real fun in the thread challenges.

Many of it's mappers were noobies at the time. Surely Skillsaw released his first wad on 1998, but he really wasn't a big name until he released Valiant.

I don't remember the first one being open to all comers, which is what a community project means. Mancuso hawked the texture set around his friends on IRC. It was very much a "friends only" thing. You had to be welcome amongst the right group of people (which I wasn't, I didn't even know the name of their channel, let alone had been invited to it).

Is there really no better way to write it, though?
Having 26 copies of the same variable acting as a value history?
It's not even an array, they're all separate variables.
a6=a5; a5=a4; a4=a3; a3=a2; a2=a1; a1=angle;
You can't have an array and do something like
for (i=26; i>1; i--) { a[i]=a[i-1]; }; a1=angle;
You have to write it all out longhand?
Is this really how retarded zscript is?
Unbelievable.
>>

I'm grateful you were sympathetic to other players of lesser ability, who would not be able to get any kind of exit at all under demo recording conditions on the kind of maps you were demanding previously, let alone record them repeatedly for a speedrunning contest.
I mean I could do an Ironman-style "how many monsters can you kill before your inevitable death" contest on a map like Island of Mystery, but there's no fucking way I'd get anywhere near the exit, let alone achieve a full clearance, on UV, without using a handicap mod that sped up all the guns, or made cyberdemons friendly or something.

I finally decided to check out Displate, because some ad said they had over 2 million different designs for anything you might want, and there's a few things I would like to put on my walls as an adult (so posters don't cut it and canvas is clunky and kinda old hat).
So I go there and search Doom, I get a mix of the latest Doom game and some Doctor Doom. So I filter for gaming only - just the new Doom game and some Doom Eternal. So I try a bunch of things, original Doom, classic Doom, retro Doom.... pic related.
Fucking seriously? 2 million designs and not a single fucking one for original Doom? I thought/hoped I'd be able to browse designs, some fan art, the original cover, maybe some cool pixel-art work of the enemies or something. I thought I'd be able to find something I liked, but not a SINGLE fucking one.
Are we really so niche? Is there no love for retro gaming anymore, or is it only considered appropriate if it's fucking console shit?
>>
>>12355505
>It makes me concerned for other ports that want deep scripting but still don't have it.
Which ports are those, though?
Why would a traditionalist, demo-compatible port want a general scripting system?
When you can script and rewrite everything, it's not Doom any more.
Might as well use a whole new engine at that point.
It's already the case, it has been stated many times previously by folk other than me, that UGZDoom (GUZDoom? GuziDoom? GoozyDoom?) is not a Doom engine but a general game engine that just happens to be able to run Doom wads.

I think all Doom source ports should cease development honestly. Yes, it's good to have a billion ports to choose from, but 90% of those appeal to vanilla pearl clutchers, 9% are one trick ponies and the 1% isn't Doom anymore. The only port I think people really need is something like Helion (rewrote the entire renderer from the ground up for performance) but with full Decorate and at least partial ZScript support.

I guess some genius could make an entirely new standard that isn't retarded, but Doom is a shit ouroboros in current year if you ask me. I love the game and the mods, but do we really need another vanilla-type port?

Agreed. Cosmetic/QoL fixes only. No more new mapping standards to divide, fracture and balkanise the community.
>Yes, it's good to have a billion ports to choose from
It actually isn't.
It was better when there was basically
- Chocolate Doom for purist vanilla
- PrBoom+ for Boom (MBF being some weird thing nobody pays attention to)
- ZDoom for scripting and gameplay mods
Then all the mappers not explicitly working on vanilla stuff made increasingly elaborate Boom maps to a well-known fixed standard whose limitations and caveats were well-understood,
and all the gameplay modders made ZDoom mods using whatever scripting it gave you
and we, the players, could play mix-and-match between them with no resource clashes
I miss being able to play, you know, Scythe, Speed of Doom, BTSX etc, you know, wads that are just maps and textures without gameplay changes, a dozen different ways, vanilla, unmodded ZDoom, or ZDoom with one of any number of gameplay mods
You can't do that any more because every fucking wad is some MBF shit that comes with its own gameplay mod and all the ports are slightly different so wads behave slightly differently in different source ports and it's all messed up and fractured and divided and ripe for harvesting by commercial interests (fuck off Bethesda/Nightdive/Atari/all other vultures).

Nu-Doom has genuinely shitted up trying to find ANYTHING classic Doom related. Wallpapers, merch, memes, you name it. Noobs making their first or second map release "regular wads" (that somehow manage to be worse than 1990s shovelware) frequently. All the old mappers who actually knew what they were doing have moved on to MBF21/DSDEHACKED -- or, god forbid, ID24 -- crap now. Since the most recent map came out, Sunder needs MBF21 dehacked extensions to even load, and play the original 14!

That's exactly what they try to achieve when they name a new game just "game". Doom, Tomb Raider, Need for Speed, God of War. They want to erase the old thing because they just want to milk the popular franchise with zero efforts, and it's hard to do if you have to compete with objectively superior quality of the original.
>>
>>12355659
Yes you do. There's a thing called "demo-compatible" that existed since forever, and every port is either this thing or not. If it's not demo-compatible, things can work however they want in it.

Now you think that to get into this series you need to have played all the older games, but the older games look too old and different, or maybe they play the old games and decide to give up. Or they don't even think you need to play the older games, but think that this is a new game for old fans of a legacy series, clearly not for the newbie. By naming it just Doom or Tomb Raider or whatever, they're signaling it's an entry point and it's for everyone, forget about the old, except we want all the brand recognition we can get from the old.

Wrong. There were only three ports worth caring about from a mapper/modders point of view.
Look, I get it. You are a noob. You don't know any of this because you only started playing Doom and joined the community long after Valiant, the herald of the modern era of combined mapset/gameplaymod bullshittery, was released. I expect you think the cacowards are actually an objective assessment of map quality and not just the opinions of a few self-selected dress-wearers. So I will explain it to you, just this once. Sit down and listen.
From the mid 2000s to the mid/late 2010s there were only 3 relevant single-player ports with non-trivial user bases: Chocolate, PrBoom+ and G/ZDoom. Basically nobody used Legacy any more, or ever used Eternity. Multiplayer was its own thing, with its own ports. This continued into the late 2010s when the abandonment of PrBoom+ created a power vacuum which Eternity failed to capitalize on, leading to its demise and the rise of UMAPINFO and the plethora of indistiguishable WinMBF/DSDA-Doom clones we see today, each with their own slightly different feature sets.

This is such a retarded simplification that it's hilarious, ports like Skulltag and ZDaemon would double as single player ports because they could, and filled needs which ZDoom couldn't.

Ports like Edge and Eternity saw not insignificant work done on them in the 2000s because Decorate would take time to even start existing, let alone be able to even do shit, and implementing ACS and using it on top of Decorate would also take time.
Watershed gameplay mods like Immoral Conduct could ONLY be done on Edge, which is why the ZDoom Edition of that mod was a crudely stripped down DeHacked substitute with not even a fraction of the depth and features. It wouldn't be until Zen Dynamics (2005) and Zero Tolerance (2008) where that level of complexity would be approached by ZDoom family ports.

yes and no. modern doom is the current & biggest thing right now so it would make sense for all the merch to be geared towards that while classic doom relevance exists as a modding platform and/or indie game engine.

you see it with other things too. fallout for example has all it's merch based around FO4 and now the TV show because the later is the newest thing while the former is the best selling/most actively played game in the franchise to the point where even when they touch the classic games, FO3 or NV in merch it's all redone in FO4/76's artstyle.

Based.
The Quake mapping community being filled with freaks is entirely due to one boomer opening the gates to them, letting them reach a critical mass unhindered, and getting bullied into handing the reins over to them.
Not a single inch can be given to these people.
Don't join anything involving them.
Don't legitimize any of their work.
Don't even talk to them.
Short of doing actual politics to invoke a final solution, that is what you have to do to prevent things from getting worse.

After the likes of Linguica and Quasar, everyone should've realized the biggest fucking thing yet: Gatekeeping doesn't work when it comes from the inside.
When the oldguard "grows up" and submits to the problem (Or is even the main source to begin with), it doesn't work.
How many generic "i hope this shows up in a twitter account that posts 4chan screenshots" posts about gatekeeping will be made before people get it in their fucking heads that the old blood is part of the problem?
Even Romero went Woke/SJW.
>>
>>12355579
This post is wrong on many levels.
1) At 2000s there were way many more source ports. Edge, Legacy and Doomsday were all almost as popular as Zdoom and had many exclusive wads made for them. People also made lot more sp content for Zdaemon and Skulltag/Zandronum as they do now. Also Eternity Engine was already a thing.
2) MBF was not any weird thing, but most of 2010s wads were MBF-compatible. PrBoom+ had MBF-compability.
3) There have always been shitloads for mapsets for zdoom. Not just because of scripting, but because of 3d geometry and custom monsters/weapons without dehacked limitations.
4) Both Scythe and Speed Of Doom sequels had custom monsters.
5) There is plenty of mapsets coming out every year without any custom deh changes other than mapnames.
6) Usually stuff that works on dsda also works on woof, nugget and cherry. So there is ultimately just choice between gzdoom and boom/mbf-ports. Simple.
7) Only casuals use kexdoom and nobody makes maps for it, so commercial interests have not done damage to Doom so far. You don't need kexdoom for even LoR.
8) Ad Mortem, an MBF21 wad, is the best thing we have done, and you are a double nigger for not enjoying it.
9) You are looking for reasons to get mad and depressed.
10) You need to suck balls.

Decided to actually read your post this time.

>I am not.
Yes you are.

>Scythe 2, plus a bunch of janky 90s crap like All Hell Breaks Loose were the exception, not the rule.
Custom or modified monsters and weapons were not rare.
Obituary, Mordeth, Osiris (one of my favorites), STRAIN, these were all notable and well received .wads and megawads from the 90s which had custom monsters and weapons. Rebirth, Caverns Of Darkness and Void, were notable ones from the early 2000s.

That also doesn't count high profile TCs like Aliens TC, Batman Doom, Army Of Darkness Doom, Action Doom, Twilight Warrior, and arguably HacX.

>All the old mappers who actually knew what they were doing have moved on to MBF21/DSDEHACKED
Because MBF21 is Boom and MBF but with more features and fixes? It's literally the waters Boom mappers would already be extensively familiar with but a lot more capable.

>ID24
The only notable mapset for ID24 that exists Legacy Of Rust by Dumpsterdive themselves, people don't want to touch it because it's still unfinished. Nobody maps for it.

>Since the most recent map came out, Sunder needs MBF21 dehacked extensions to even load, and play the original 14!

Doom 2 India Only
the rules are simple, you just make doom 2 maps that use a lot of brown textures, especially the brown liquid ones.

I hate to burst your bubble but even the Duke Nukem community suffers from this problem. Just look what happened with the Duke Nukem Forever 2001 restoration project.
>>
>>12356687
It would have to be heavily changed, including the level design. Arcade games need people to feed quarters you can't have a game where someone can take their time. You can add a timer, but some levels are more labyrinthine which makes it less suited for that
>>
>>12356687
Unknown. Ask Romero or Carmack.
>>
>>12356708
I don't think it would need that many changes. It would be:

1. Timer, so you can't just sit around in the levels forever.
2. Resurrecting enemies (Basically Nightmare Difficulty with a few more mercies)
3. If the player can't memorize the complicated levels and end up lost and dying, well that's just tough shit.
>>
>>12356687
I don't think it would work as an arcade game.
>>
>>12356708
You could have made a timer that was something like par time*2 or 3. That would be reasonable, I think.

I revised it.
These arcade "flight stick" levers can incorporate force feedback via a small rumble motor.

So you could have the arcade game have force feedback such that the shotgun gives a firm bump, the chaingun buzzes, the BFG ramps up slowly then big bump, etc. Chainsaw could be fun too.

(You)'ve been dumped on already, but I'm still waiting for an elaboration on Eternity's demise, 'teacher.'
It just had a major release six months ago. Recently, it's worked on fundamentals like finishing Heretic, physics refinements, a renderer update that solved long-standing performance issues on all but the most childish slaughtershite, many bug fixes, and keeping up with the endless Boom++ arms race. The code base has still regular contributors and, ehh... 1.5 active developers. Once Claude joins the teamu, there'll be 2.5
During its supposed death the late 2010s, I'm pretty sure it was receiving edge portals at that time, and its most important mapping feature was finally becoming 100% gameplay compliant. Pretty important if people are going to use the thing.
Not seizing a bigger spot in the limelight is a fair call, but no port is entitled to an audience or a bloated dev team, and it still doesn't fit even a rhetorical definition of dead, so what was it missing to count as alive?

https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Austin_Virtual_Gaming
>It was founded by five "Doom junkies" who were University of Texas alums and figures in the Austin-local tech industry in the wake of the massive enthusiasm about Doom. As such the location was uniquely dedicated to Doom deathmatch, possessing a local network of computers in 600 square feet of space on which players could play indefinitely at a rate of $8 per hour.
That's not really the same as a traditional arcade, but presumably Id still made some profit in exchange for permission to charge people money for playing their game. They were well aware of what was happening and could've knew the owners personally.
>On June 18, 1994, the store held its first official Doom deathmatch tournament, headlined by id Software employees John Romero and Shawn Green who were in attendance and participated directly in the competition.

I wouldn't consider myself an epic pro at Quake but I didn't despise any other map in Alkaline on skill 3 other than that fucking stupid pillars map. The last part in particular almost feels unplaytested or encouraging people to savescum through it (which is what I ended up doing between waves); you have to sync up your jumping, how the waves are going to come in, when you pick up the quad, your positioning, and ultimately your platforming because it's your only way to have enough ammo/health in a coverless arena to deal with the wave rape.
It's obviously not unbeatable but I really just had no interest in doing that part knowing that I would have to do it squeaky clean after trying from the start of the arena after 4-6 hours of attempts. I think it would have been appropriately challenging with 1 or so less waves but maybe they spawn in tighter so you can maximize the utility of the quad you get.

Here's a question for you boys: What do you feel is the best use case for the freeze thrower in Douk 3D? Every other weapon in his arsenal has a clear role in my mind, but I struggle to find a good use for that silly ice gun. So I often pull it out to freeze lizard troopers and chaingunners when I see there's extra freezer ammo nearby.
Admittedly there's times I feel like I don't use the devastators enough too, the RPG is too satisfying.
>>
>>12357234
It's good for turrets if you don't have explosions. I use it for ep4 Alien Beasts and on everything else whenever the map drops me lots of ammo for it. It also bounces off walls so can be situational in tight corridors if you struggle with fights
>>
>>12357248
I never thought about using it on turrets before. I'll keep that in mind.

>Brutal Doom v22 test 4
Is it still ruined, or is there an option for it to be good again?
It's been ages since I messed around with mods, I remember absolutely loving the BD mod at around v19 I think it was, because the gore/splatter effects weren't overdone and the extra enemy attacks were subtle and felt like they really worked in the context of the original game. Also there was a 'realism mode' that was nicely balanced for quicker enemy reactions, smarter AI, and lower health on both sides.
Then there was a new version (v20 or v21) and it was fucked, because he'd decided to modify most of the existing weapons (v19 had a couple but again, they fit), loads of the sounds, ramped up the gore to stupid, and it just didn't feel like Doom anymore. Plus he screwed the balance on the realism mode somehow.
I understand if he wants to add/try new things, but removing the option for the subtler approach was a deal breaker for me. Last time I played with mods I was still using v19, but I'm curious to know if he carried on down the same path or if he corrected back.
>Also any recommendations for mods that might suit me better based on what I've said would be appreciated.

I mean, it matters less for Nugget because you can't aim up and down there. It makes a much bigger difference for GzDoom given the potentially much more varied nature of weapons.

>>
>>12357431

Biggest changes as for v22 are performance improvements. Remade blood/water/fire decals and particles, new weapon sprites. I'm not old bd player so I can't say all minor details changed and etc, I like v22 much more than v21.
>>
>>12357343
I don't know, I played only the OLD versions when they were new and enjoyed them well enough. V19 through V21 brought me no joy and I ignored the mod until V22 dropped. I sometimes use the Freezer on Protector Drones because of how fast and jittery they move around, so the shots bouncing around can help with hit probability.
Sometimes I also use it for shooting around corners a bunch, since I don't tend to use the ammo much otherwise, it also being less seldom used means it's often a reserve weapon, too.

The best part of it though is when you freeze an enemy, take out your pistol, and you can say "Hasta La Vista, baby!" or "Rest in PIECES." then shoot them so they shatter.

Enjoy your tea and scones, for they will the last thing you taste before your meal consists entirely of BBC-grade protein, and you won't hear a peep from sir Attenborough - if you know what I mean.

Based and dukepilled.
The mapping scene is not as big as for Doom but the goods are top tier, highly recommend to lurk into it and check out what looks interesting. I made few maps for it too, Weather Report and Locked & Loaded. Now finishing up my 3rd one for the duke /vr/. Sadly there's not much activity for the project though, it's only me and another anon that I haven't heard from in a while, hope he finishes his work too.

Anyone here makes MIDI specifically for DooM? Any quick tips to not make them sound like hot shit?
I know a bit of music theory and such but I find making MIDIs quite hard because I can't use crutches I use to make standard music.
The bass is always farty and background elements always clash with whatever else I have going on.

I don't really like that. Something I like about quake is the "the rules of the game are the same in every difficulty, it's just the map that changes" thing (except for nightmare as we know but it doesn't count). It seems to me this is a cop out to not make an effort and rebalance the maps for each difficulty. Albeit it is nice to know more or less what you're getting into, that I won't deny.
>>
>>12358043
I’d be more inclined to agree when it’s a more traditional mapset with a clear and set progression of levels. When it’s not, when it’s a hub of levels where the progression is up to you - and the levels aren’t all ‘safely samey’ feeling regarding combat and encounter difficulty - I think it’s nigh essential.

>Red Spiral
Holy shit I had forgotten about that mod. It's really one of the highlight of Doom weapon modding imo.
Too many mods that makes you an unstoppable one man army where you decimate absolutely everything even with the weakest gun in the pack.
It also makes other mods shine, things like flashlight, footsteps, rain, spooky enemies and ambient music, all of which I never really had much interest in outside of a passing novelty before playing Red Spiral.
My favorite way to play it is with the mods I mentionned earlier, Project Malice, darkness settings to the max, flashlight at half strength from default ||mostly as a cope for my aging PC not being able to handle the default range|| and scaling down the resolution a shit ton because why not.
I never believed into turning classic Doom into a scary game before playing like this, and it was basically my only reason to even keep gzdoom around.
Thanks for reminding me.

Since I'm here and I'm sitting on it, here, something I got from an acquaintance a while ago: https://files.catbox.moe/uhot2u.rar

It's a monster/item limiter. Unlike stuff like 10.5x it won't make monsters die upon being alerted, they'll just not spawn and you can control the items too. I suggest not touching the item cap if playing with RS'93 but you do you.
It's not too smart, you'll have to set the limits per-map manually but it means you can turn even shit like Sunder into a long, lonely resource-deprived journey. Enjoy.

GOD DAMN FINALLY! What did it: I looked up on youtube and apparently there was a mega health on top of the first arena that I didn't get. Going back to get it allowed me to get to the final arena on full health, also grabbed some armor along the way. Then it was mostly about trying to not use a single rocket until the part where the quad damage pops up, to then have enough rockets to just spam them constantly from then on. Anon who told me to save the quad was right, thanks. Grabbed it only when the flying saucers showed up. Technically my second time seeing the clear screen, as I beat it earlier with quicksaves during the fight just to have an idea of how much ammo I would need, but this attempt I started from a save before the arena and did it in one go.

I've been replaying Half-Life 2 with MMod and Project HL2. Gotta say I'm having more fun than I remember, even though Ravenholm is kind of annoying once the spooky vibes become familiar. Got stuck in that section where zombies seem to spawn indefinitely for a bit, since I wasted my ammo on them.

Picrel isn't with Project HL2 loaded, just kinda surprised at how good the game looks just with MMod - actually hard to believe it's a mod for an old game, then again HL2 hasn't aged much in the visual department. I kinda wish it got to the action faster like HL1 but oh well. I still like the game plenty.

In case no one heard about it, Project HL2 is just a reanimation and model pack for MMod. Uses HL Alyx models for Gordon's arms and some pretty swanky looking models for the guns, while the animations get real snappy. Good shit, probably not for everyone. as if anyone actually talks about HL2 in these threads
>>

Half Life 2 would be great if it actually felt like a sequel to Half Life 1 and didn't have multiple long and painfully obvious tech demo segments.

Mmm, I really should give MMod another run. I remember giving it a try and enjoying it a decent bit at the time, but got quickly sidetracked since I'm not really big on Half-Life. Frankly I still don't get why the games are revered as they are. Both have pretty lackluster shooting, and while it kinda works better in multiplayer, that hasn't been the prevalent way to play the games in decades now.

I was playing Echoes for Gold Source and then Diffusion/Entropy Zero: 2 after playing some of these bigger doom/quake/build mods - and I will say I can and do enjoy them but even with the modern half life mods - they are just way jankier with worse performance than most Doom/Quake/Build maps. It does seem like every Valve engine game can only do maps with only maybe 50 enemies (and you have to play for a number of hours just to reach close to that number unless it's L4D) max on that level that you can usually just plow through in 10 mins or less only to hit another loading screen even with it's 'best of the best' modern mods. And yeah I wish the shooting felt better in Half Life games outside of the multiplayer mods.

I have to wonder if all the scripting Half Life is doing is even worth it when some mods for ID Tech 1/2 can emulate the design philosophy almost perfectly and then have vastly better shooting/enemy feel along with better level transitions since it doesn't just pause in the middle of some random hallway to load the next map.

I actually really liked getting through Nova Prospekt with Project HL2 for some reason, can't figure out why. Maybe it's just how much faster the animations make me feel? There's also true ironsights for most weapons if you want to be extra accurate, I guess.

>>12358954
To be fair, HL2 is leagues more complex than anything made with Doom and Quake. GZDoom itself is far behind the curve when it comes to things Source had at release, since it's been purpose-made for a game rather than adding to an existing featureset. I'm not a fan of GZ games so it's not like I'm doing super in-depth research, but I'm pretty sure only Selaco has a pretty rudimentary physics system and Divine Frequency also has loading zones. The lighting in both also is primitive in the technical sense, but post-processing does its job anyway.

Now in terms of actual gameplay: yeah, I agree. You can easily make a Half-Like in GZ if you put your heart in it and have the player get swarmed by 10 billion enemies - well, not really, GZ is shit at handling too many active things at once and shits itself if there are too many 3D sectors being drawn but you get the idea. With the original game, as i was released in the 90s? I don't know man, Strife's kinda shit even though it has all the ingredients to pull it off.

I still think HL2 doing all the shit it does is worth it. It's in this limbo between balls to the wall action you see in Doom, the numerically tougher combat of Quake (everything is aggressive and wants you dead) and with just a bit more work it could fall near FEAR. It's just a different type of shooter that's a little bit more tactical than its peers.

I still like HL1 better, though.

Drama is part of this board's history, and bans were only applied when said people had their own infiltrated here to mass report people for calling them out.
i know this because back when i was infiltrated at the quake mapping discord/slipseer circlejerk central, they always organized in private to come down here and silence people calling them out, the save me romero meme was even created by one of the obnoxious morons there who hates q2 and 3a.

Nowadays, every drama in this very threads can be always traced back to said people because they see /vr/ as "the root of all evil" as they also saw dbp too when they had enough of doomworld and zdoom's bullshit.
They don't care about the game at all, they just want a platform to push their bullshit, do the same repeated garbage, and ban anyone who calls them out as they did to dumptruck_ds or term.
And unfortunately, things are as we see now because most of the "old guard" are as bad as the people everyone calls out.

HL2 is great, i still keep my copy of the orange box pristine on top my shelf, and i must say that valve really got the job done restoring the release visuals of HL2.

Can someone knowledgeable with ZScript tell me how to add a playerclass check to this? I assume this is the part that it'd go in.

Basically I want it to check for "CaptainBlazkowicz" to play his step sounds, and "BloodRayne" to play Rayne/Step. I have two separate versions of this submod for each character and that's dumb so I want to combine them.

The important bit is

Alternatively you can do
>pl is 'BloodRayne'
for ancestry checks. Both will work with that class.
Personally, I'd make this sound a property instead of hardcoding it in getStepSound. But that's only if you care about potentially adding more player classes in the future.

That doesn't happen for me, you must be using some extension I guess? Only thing I see is the post count in the bottom right corner turns oblique

Yeah, seems I'm so used to it that I forget what it was like without it.

Oh shit, I forgot to specify the playerclass isn't ZScript. Did that matter?

Script error, "DIFootstepsB.pk3:zscript/stepeventhandler.zsc" line 27:
Unknown class name 'BloodRayne' of type 'PlayerPawn'

>only if you care about potentially adding more player classes in the future.
Nah, this is just for Doom Incarnate.

Hm. ZScript is parsed before Decorate so this might affect it. Forgot about that important detail, sorry. Are you loading the footsteps after the main mod? If that doesn't work either, you can do a runtime check instead like this:
>Name cls = 'BloodRayne';
>pl.GetClass() == cls
>>
>>12360207
Yeah, though I was thinking about putting it directly in my version after I got it working.

And that one does seem to have worked, thank you.
>>
>>12360246
Glad it works. The alternative that I didn't think of for some reason is to use
>pl.GetClassName() == 'BloodRayne'
You can omit the separate Name variable in that case. Had a brainfart and forgot GetClassName is also a thing. That returns a Name as opposed to a class type, meaning it won't fail upon loading if the class doesn't exist.
