I liked Final Fantasy better when it was a Dragon Quest knock off.

That's not to say the later games are bad. I don't mean for this to be a "[highly respected and universally praised game] is ACTUALLY the worst game ever!!" thread. I love FF7 (and want raw bed breaking sex with Yuffie), and I especially love how its world is something like modernity coming in and threatening the stereotypical fantasy RPG world of the past, it was a really interesting concept. But as the series progressed it innovated on itself so much that it turned into something entirely different. Sure there's a lot of common things all throughout the series and I'm not denying that, but the earlier games and the later games clearly have a different identity. And I like them all, but I really prefer 1-5 (not sure about 6, I haven't actually played that one) and the first two Mana games (not sure about the third, I haven't played that one). On the other hand, DQ seems to be more conservative and has stuck with the same style of world even in the newest games, and as someone who grew up on FF I wish these games would have done the same. I'm playing DQ for the first time right now and I'm enjoying it a lot because it feels like when I played FF1-5.

Play DQ4 and 5 and realize that Final Fantasy never stopped being DQ.

I'll put it in the backlog but please explain.

FF1 was very highly based on DQ2 and 3 (even though it hadn't come out yet, gameplay elements like the focus on classes had been known for a very long time) but it tried to go beyond what DQ2 was doing, for instance it gives the boat for exploration much earlier on because they wanted to go beyond that and surprise everyone with the airship.

FF2 on the other hand goes well beyond being a DQ derivative, both in terms of gameplay and story. There was quite nothing like it in terms of story, with its more down to earth and mature take on war&peace and with the fantasy elements only being a back drop. The gameplay system was also very bold.

My point is that FFs were succesful precisely because one way or another, they weren't just mere DQ clone and always either tried to surpass it, or to do something different entirely. They're very different from the tons of literal DQ clones you can find on Famicom that offer nothing special and which usually barely have half of what made DQ interesting in the first place; so I find calling FF1/2 DQ knock-offs quite insulting.
FF3 on the other hand, I could understand.

Wow that's a lot of words to not actually say anything.

I feel like the series was never conservative at all outside of 1 and the way it's been going since X is true to its original roots since the Famicom. If that is a good thing or not I guess depends, I think 15 sucks and 16 looks bad but I like 12 and 13 as much as the best of the 8/16 bit games

>they weren't just mere DQ clone and always either tried to surpass it, or to do something different entirely
That's fine, but beyond a certain point they iterated on it so much that it became something entirely different and that's my point.

The earlier FF games and the layer FF games are very different. I like the earlier ones better. I'm sorry that you have the attention span of a goldfish and the reading comprehension of a third grader. Did you move on to chapter books yet?
>>

I said that DQ was conservative. FF isn't remotely conservative.
>16 looks bad
16 doesn't exist. Nobody bought it, nobody played it, and nobody ever talks about it. It was never even developed.
>I like 12 and 13 as much as the best of the 8/16 bit games
Not to be an asshole or anything but I don't believe you.

These games are monotonous repetitive garbage and their only saving grace in 2026 is how good the music still is. RIP Nobuo Nomura

Oh wait, he's not dead? They're telling me he's not dead yet

5 remains the best FF game - tons of jobs, cool characters, an amazing world, tons of secrets, excellent plot that still has the classic elements.

I see what you mean but I think FF2 was already different from pretty much the start of the series and in fact is the one that set that standards.

NTA but that made me laugh.

I think I understand, and agree somewhat. My personal favorites are 5, 3, and 7=9 as a tie for third. The NES and SNES games, speaking very broadly, have a nice combination of fantasy and a bit of sci-fi/science fantasy. Some of the later games like 7, 8, 13, and 15 were starkly different in that they had a more modern IRL urban art style. Some more than others.

The pulpy fantasy/scifi should really be brought back, at least for one game.
