Imagine being in 1985 and playing Space Harrier in an arcade and then having to go home and go back to playing baby shit like Mario and Duck Hunt.
>>12355697>duck huntShit>MarioBetter and more complex and fun than space harrier in every way>wow graphics and simple shoot and avoid gameplay! No thanks, I want secrets and a lot of unique levels, there is a reason why lamecades lost
adult game space harrier
>>12355697>imagineI was there bro, I saw it all. I drooled over SEGA arcade machine power then went home to my Atari 400
>>12355697I never got to play the arcade version back then but I always enjoyed the Master System port. I wouldn't say necessarily it's a better game than Mario but it was pretty fun. Space Harrier actually had a NES version as well, it's seems like that game appeared on just about every platform. The 32X version was fantastic and almost made that add-on worth having
>>12355697lolwut? here's Space Harrier running on a 48k calculator in 1985https://youtu.be/f7J7FhbxeoI?si=dU1rpceJ88dfBBGk
Beat my score.
Super Mario Bros has infinitely more depth and longevity than on-rails arcade games. Space Harrier succeeded in arcades because it's like a theme park ride, SMB succeeded at home because there was more to do.
Console warring aside, it was really special to go to an arcade back in the day. I wasn't born until the late 80s, but even in the 90s, a lot of arcade games felt like a glimpse into the future.
>>12355697I liked its boss theme, it was like "I will make it very evident that the creature you will be fighting is evil".
>>12355697>not having arcade quality games at home>not having the internet on your cell phone>not having internet or cellphonesThings zoombrats don't understand
>>12355841The main theme music of Space Harrier always reminded me of that old 70"s sci-fi series Blake's 7https://youtu.be/lif3sY7ibZI?si=UucHAxlPqrq8F50A
>>12355826I'm early 80s born and agree. Though I was in my 20s when I realized that the sf2 world warrior port on SNES wasn't a 1:1 port. But even older games like the star wars arcade from the early 80s felt futuristic
>>12355697>comping a rails shooter to a console platformerWhat?
>>12355697That probably would've ruined Mario for me.
>>12355697>Imagine being in 1985Don't need to. I was older than you are now in 1985.
>>12355697Yeah we liked it and Super Mario Bros. was new in arcades so we had a literal arcade game at home. Do continue to be jealous.
>>12355863It's bait
>>12355890Damn, you're 80 years old? Impressive.
>>12355890Did you see Jaws on in theaters? I'm jelly
>>12355697>be 1985>have an actual reason to be excited to leave your house because the world still offers unique experiences you cant get at home
>>12355697I'd get lucky if I had a color TV in 1985
>>12355697Mario has much deeper gameplay than Space Harrier.
>>12355758duck hunt score is like the easiest thing to cheese bro
>>12355697I always thought that shit sucked
>>12356669space harrier rules
>>12356652Same could be said to be true for the majority of arcade titles.
>>12356673I follow the various arcade scoring communities pretty closely and I'm not aware of Space Harrier being a game people keep coming back to trying to master. It's pretty shallow.
>>12355863And what? Are you so dim-witted you can't process the comparison?
>>12355826Counter-point: if you were a kid who lived near an arcade then the novelty of the games would wear off and you'd realize they're rather unfair and shallow a good bit of the time. And if you're a poor kid who doesn't have but one cheap console at home or none you begin to covet the console experience for the unlimited play-time and more long-form gameplay of non-arcade genres.
>>12355856Interesting take, not really seeing how it sounds like Splendor
>>12356654then do it.
>>12356007>12yo cant into mathlol>>12356035I lived in one hours town with no theater when Jaws was in theaters. But saw Star Wars in Mann's Chinese.
>>12357492Point the zapper at a well-lit piece of paper. The white levels trigger the gene to recognize a hit, because the zapper is a camera, and the the ducks' sprites are resources by white squares when you pull the trigger. The game registers a hit when the zapper's camera sees all white.
>>12355697I was there at that time, and I understood it was not practical to have a dedicated machine with hydraulics at home. It was acceptable to have good games at home and in the arcades, where the arcades can showcase new technologies and unique experiences. It was sort of like a glimpse into the future visiting arcades, but it did not diminish the home functions of a console as the experiences can be different yet still as good. It was just how you can and chose how to spend your time.
>>12357840>the zapper is a camerahahahahahah no it's a photosensor, it doesnt record light it just detects it. also the screen goes all black first before showing the white targets, so you need to show the photosensor a black sheet of unlit paper before showing the lit white paper within a few miliseconds using the exact same timing as the screen changes. it's not even remotely practical to try and cheat like that, you're better off holding the gun directly against the screen instead. the lightbulb trick is a myth
>>12359220It's a 0.000001MP camera
>>12356681Holy shit I'm tired of you fucking retards. It's like you have no idea of any arcade game that released after 1986. Why are you even on a retro game board if you clearly are so unwilling to engage or understand at even the smallest level? There is nothing that distinguishes you from the average /v/ gacha girl posting retardniggerfaggot favella dweller
>>12361293You're the retard for shitting on great arcade games with your faggot false dichotomy MaRiO is DeEpEr bullshit as if somehow that "proves" that people weren't fascinated and enthralled with arcade games and loved going out to play them even if they had a console at all.
