I don't really play as Ryu, I prefer Dhalsim but I don't get the whole crying over him being a simple character among cast of other stereotypes.

Fighting to be strong and nothing else is by far the most boring motivation for an action character. In the context of Ryu being basically the first main guy meant to be the balanced beginner character, it does make sense, but when you compare him to guys who came after who have more personality and motivation he does come off as boring
