I feel like "Link is gay" was a joke of the 2000s that completely stopped at some point (before the woke era, too). It was only ever based on two things: him being very pretty and him wearing a tunic. So there was never really anything there, it was just that there were so few game characters that everyone was aware of and Link was more of a prettyboy than the rest of them. I'm not saying that there isn't yaoi art of him now (obviously there is), I'm just talking specifically about westerners making gay jokes about him.
