1977, the year gaming changed forever.
>>
>>12379615
Yes, but 1978 hit even harder, as did 1980, and then 1981 smashed it out of the park.

The jump from the magnavox odyssey to the atari 2600 is unmatched. We will never have a leap like that again.

Atari was the first to have anything resembling actual games but still you had to have felt like an absolutely smug bastard back then to have owned an Intellivision or Collecovision and mocked Atari shits who were still gaming on that primitive wood grain relic in the early 80's

is this the shitpost of the week

Yeah, no fucking shit.
>>
>>12379638
I have an intellivision but I'd rather have an Atari.
>>
>>12379638
Why aren't consoles wood-grained and advertised by men in suits any more :(

The same reason we dont get cool cover arts in this style anymore. The 70s has came and went.
>>

also dont forget the literal adapter thing that let you play 2600 games anyways. real wild west hrs. pretty much literally just piracy lol
definitely more powerful machines tho. and im sure the devs appreciated having actual fucking VRAM, amongst other things.

counterpoint: intellivisions controllers were giga-ass, and they were hardwired into the console, so you couldnt even swap em out for atari ones

>went from one cursor
>to actual graphics
OK, I see your point, but Donkey Kong made so many people part with so many quarters that it made the VCS/Atari 2600 look like a joke in comparison, which is was and still is, though I do adore it.

Those were the days.

Arguably this is a similar situation to Sony vs Bleem, in other words there is nothing wrong with it
>>
>>12379638
Yes, but imagine getting pic related for Christmas as a kid as your friends are enjoying their competent version on their Colecovision systems.
I play it sometimes when I want a "I like how much this sucks" experience, or a Donkey Kong-athon, but the sound effects are like geese being run over with the occasional electrical fire. And the graphics are just insultingly bad and probably deal deep psychic damage.

The appearance of Pong in public venues like bars was a much bigger deal.

They had Pong at my pediatric doctor's office. It was made just for those offices.
Never got to play its arcade version, but that is exactly that, except in pic related form.

This port was developed by Coleco. They intentionally made it as shit as possible so the Colecovision port looked mind blowing by comparison.
>>
>>12380021
That was very underhanded of them. Imagine how many kids were heartbroken with the Intellivision version? Speaking of the Colecovision version, that didn't even have half of the animations yet it still blows the Intellivision one away, so their dastardly plan worked.

To the boomers amongst us.. when I revisit my childhood systems (SNES, pc games of that era) it's very nostalgic, but still genuinely fun because they are will designed games (the ones I revisit) with quality mechanics. I'm not even trying to be demeaning, but do you get anything other than nostalgia when revisiting pitfall for example? Do you really enjoy jumping the same screens for more then 5 minutes? I'd rather mow the lawn for you or rake your leafs you ol geezer. Inb4 it's fun because you don't have brain rot. Your brain would have to be fried off all that lsd you took at Woodstock to be entertained by this in current year.

I'm not much for nostalgia and wasn't particularly into high-score arcade games even at the time, so I may not be the best to answer, but my family did have an Atari 2600 (VCS); not sure exactly when we got it but by 1980 at least. We played it more as a family activity than a solo one, even when playing single-player games. I don't have much interest in it these days.
There are multiplayer games on the 2600 that are fun, like Warlords, Fishing Derby, Football (the original with the ridiculous scores, not Real Sports), and Flag Capture. "It's fun with friends" and all. I don't know I'd say they're more fun that later party games like Bomberman but certainly still fun to be had.
(We also had an Atari 800 computer which was a lot more interesting to me than the 2600.)

>Do you really enjoy jumping the same screens for more then 5 minutes?

Yes. I do that with Donkey Kong all the time across many platforms. For Pitfall? Not so much because for me, that one is pure nostalgia.
>Woodstock
Oh....you meant an actual Boomer. Heh. They don't play video games.

Once the suits changed to buisness casual and furniture stores sold you veneer particle board furniture instead of solid lacquered wood.
