Apart from a fancy castle, did Wario manage to wish for a decade of physical invulnerability? What's the lore behind him lacking any form of losing health or dying in WL2 and 3?

Much like SMB3 being a stage play, WL1 & 3 are |Wario retelling the stories but omitting all the times he got his ass kicked to make him sound cool, a la Baron Munchausen.

The character was based on a Yatterman character and had an entire series exclusive to Japan, but for some reason it was made to appeal to Western children and cartoon physics. Holy shit, it's so much nonsense.

Don't know about, but remember that Wario Land 3 takes place in a magic area encased in a toy box/toy globe, where the only way you get a Game Over is in the final boss fight. I felt like shit knowing you keep 'killing' the townspeople turned into critters over and over until the curse is broken.
I liked that "Wario cannot die" feature, to be honest; it makes you push forward until you get those jumps right and collect all 8 coins in a same stage run. Only you giving up can stop the fat bastard.

I'm fine with the invulnerable Wario and the status effect gimmick, but there's something I miss about the first game's more Mario-like trappings of an overworld with selectable maps and all, as well as the different cap powerups.

I particularly liked the jet cap because of the flying shoulder tackles you could do with it. It really conveys power to have Wario's bulk of fat and muscles propelled by a rocket engine, with enough force to keep him airborne, as he focuses that energy to a point with his shoulder.
The faster movement and flight was also nice.

I assumed it was because in platformers you tend to take damage when you touch enemies, and Wario is such a bad guy it's he who damages on touch (iirc even in WL4 enemies get knocked out when they touch you unless they actually attack you with their weapons)

That was how I always interpreted it, you get a role reversal and get to play as an enemy that can dish out contact damage
