The hardest part for 9 year old me was failing a level in the chocolate mountains then walking to star road to donut plains to get power ups then going to the star road to get a blue yoshi then walking back to Wendy's level and inevitably failing the level again

Average zoomer when they play their first retro game. Can't wait for them to play their second so they can compare it to SMW

>zoomers are bad at games
I really don't get this sentiment. It's the zoomers that popularized grinding out ranked games (LoL, Valorant, CSGO, etc.), yeah they existed before zoomies times, but zoomers were the one who really went gung-ho and took gaming the extra mile, and turned it into a livelihood that can pay via streaming or competing as opposed to just another hobby. Even older games like Quake or Team Fortress 2 have their competitive scenes populated by zoomers in this day and age, and still showing off unprecedented gameplay. Smash Melee? A kid under the age of 20 who's maining Luigi - a historic low-tier who saw nigh zero rep in the highest comp levels - is currently beating out Zain, the #1 player, every time they face off each other. Even speedrunning of relic games is being broken apart by zoomers. SM64 speedrunning? Suigi, some kid who can't even legally drink, broke record after record in every category. SMB NES speedrunning? Niftski, same case.

Not to patronize, but 1CCing retro games doesn't even come close to the difficulty of top level gameplay seen in multiplayer ranked games or becoming the top level at a speedrunning game. Old or new game, the zoomers are coming out on top.
>>
Rrepect zoomers!

The modern way they play tetris hardly counts. It's similar to how competitive rubiks cube players solve them. They seriously turn the controllers upside down and slide the buttons around so pieces keep flipping until they lock into the perfect spot. It's skill still but not in the spirit of the game.
>>
>>12385804
>I can't adjust so it doesn't count
They even made a tournament just for you and zoomers still dominate.

>1CCnodmg in something brutal like a late 80s arcade shmup demands iron consistency.

Thinking we're comparing apples to oranges here. They are all their own skill domains.

Speedrunning requires optimization and often frame perfect inputs and far more consistency than faggot shmups no one plays
>>
>>12385845
Far more consistency depends on what you're measuring. A 40–60 minute 1CC requires sustained execution with no resets. Many speedruns are segmented and reset-heavy, optimizing specific sections repeatedly. Those are different consistency models. The comparison only works if we define the metric first.
>>
>>12385662
Wasn't Sairyou also like 19 or 20 when he beat Inbachi?
>>
>>12385857
>segmented
99% of speedrun discussion revolves around full game runs. If resets happen, they impact your time too. If the category is very long, like much longer than an hour, then the whole run is usually reset if you want a decent time.

Shmups give you "resets" in the form of resources - lives, bombs, hypers whatever. The autism you're trying to associate with speedrunning is scoring.
>>
>>12385772
I mean you
>>
>>12385662
It's why gatekeeping video games doesn't work if you had any interest in pushing them further. It's mostly used as an excuse by 35 year olds to hang out in IRC without having to see 14 year old cringe. You need the newfags.
>>
>>12385839
where's the bait?
>>
>>12385902
zoomers sucked the fun out of playing video games like the zombies they are. like they suck the fun out of society.
>>
>>12385908
i think you're just bad at video games. no one cares if you're the best out of your 2 friends at mario 1 anymore lmao.
>>
These zoomers who are autistic enough to master old games aren't representative of the average zoomer.
Also, they got where they are thanks to 30+ years of collective autism from people born before them playing and mastering the game and sharing knowledge online
>>
>>12385845
>far more consistency
speedrunning demands 0 consistency after the racing scene died a decade ago. If you are inconsistent you just reset your speedrun and try again and the only thing you lose is your worthless time.

Playing a shmup in the arcades is different in that resetting actually costs you money so you want to be consistent. Playing a shmup today is basically the same as a grind monkey speedrunner, just spend enough time and youll complete your goal.
>>
>>12385916
>30+ years of collective autism from people born before them
not really. millenniggers have been bullshitting about their childhood games and spreading misinformation for years. see the stupid pokemon rumors and all the cheating and splicing in mario 64.
>>
>>12385918
Do you really think Niftski and Suigi aren't consistent in their own games because there's no money involved? Don't be delusional. If you just want a 1cc, shmups give you far more leeway than you're making them out to be. Go watch a random 1cc of anything, there will be mistakes everywhere.
>>
>>12385918
This is like saying your faggot rhythm game is super duper hardcore because the terrible expensive controller gave you carpal tunnel at 22

They are equivalent, I see both speedrunning and 1ccing a shmup at home to be self-aggrandizing at worst and self-improvement by way of working hard at a goal at best. Neither of these hobbies are competitive they are slot machines where you input thousands of hours and sometimes you hit the jackpot and sometimes you dont. Neither require consistency.

talking to people on this board is wild, you are constantly fighting against people aggressively misinterpreting your statements.

Well anon was saying zoomers are, like, the best ever
>>
>>12386128
>No, it wasn't.
You're not contemplating on the word "popularized" enough here; the cultural conditioning surrounding gaming back then is night and day compared to now. Back then real life obligations caused too much friction between grinding out a game and fulfilling responsibilities. Coupled with the fact that the motivation was purely intrinsic (which has its limits), you just didn't see people fully push a game as much as they could. Nowadays? There are hundreds of streamers right now, right at this moment, making a decent living grinding out a game day in and out, for literally full-time hours. The motivation that exists now has extrinsic value; you literally have sponsors putting in money into these gaming scenes, there are real stakes beyond impressing 5 people in a niche forums now. That kind of dedication was absent back then because the conditions were wholly different; gaming even at the highest level in the olden days was a glorified hobby at best. We have literal superpower hardware companies investing in specialized gaming hardware and software meant to push gaming skill-caps, it's a different world now.

Back then just 100%ing a game was enough for you to be called a sweat.

the whole point is who is better at games, not who has the most "fun"
and I'm pretty sure those top players are having lots more fun playing than you or me, or do you think they put thousands of hours into something they hate?
(I know there are addicts who regret spending so much time on certain games, but that's not all of them)

Zoomers and boomers are equally good/bad at games. The difference is that games used to be for nerds, now they're trying to sell games to everyone including your grandma. Hardcore games for nerds still exist and nerds are still trying to autistically optimize even casual games to hardcore levels, but it's all been pushed to the side, away from mainstream gaming, when it used to be at least somewhat mainstream gaming.

I don't believe most millennials could either. Since the thread is about SMW, oldfags would savescum romhacks all the time. Just look at raocow's first LPs back in the Google Video and early YouTube days, he would save or reload like every 10 seconds.

I finally made my gf, a gen Z who grew up on ps1 and ps2, play Super Mario World, I chose World because I deem it the easier of the retro Mario games to get into.
Well, she was completely crushed by it and got super frustrated. She was able to barely make it through Yoshi's Island 2 but starting from YI3 she wasn't able to beat ANY level, I also keep reminding her to use the run button to jump longer but I don't know, she can't grasp it.
I keep beating levels (we were playing 2 player mode) and by the time she tried Donut Plains 3 she gave up.
I then gave her my 3ds and she played New SMB2 and had a much easier time with it, started beating levels and got to the first castle all on her own.
She's also not bad at video games but admittedly her expertise is puzzle games like Puyo Puyo, Dr Mario and Tetris.
She also plays some survival horror games and FPSs, but I guess 2D action/platformer just isn't on her system.
Still, it made me realize how SMW is only "easy" for those of us who played lots of Mario and platformers in general.
The New series really was made with less skilled/experienced players in mind
