The music is completely off-beat and hence sounds very derpy. The notes are chugging along, overlapping, and echoing. Using FluidSynth. Tried different soundfonts.

Finally got around to trying some of it, will try some more later, but the first impressions are solid.
Only major feedback at this time: After playing a lot of similar mods, I'm really into the idea of not being able to shoot while holding the run button. I'll be trying more to see if I'd want that in here, still need to find time to do so.

Anyone make doom midis using ableton? I use it for non .mid stuff so I'm trying to stick with it instead of using a different program. It can only export one track in format 0, I tried midi merger lite to just stick them together but that expects format 1. I'm making steady progress on the paintovers, though in the future I need to figure out a way to lessen my workload more because goddamn doing touchups and paintovers to 104 frames is tedious.
There's not much left here with this project, it's mainly just finish the paintovers, player sprites/sounds, replace the berserk, replace the chainsaw, replace the backpack, and do some playtesting.

I noticed, it's because he had to use the pain elemental / lost soul attack for the ghosts on the last map, so lost souls are something else. Probably lost soul corpses
I also noticed they fall out of the air when they die, which looks pretty weird and very out of place
They float out the windows and you have to chase them down because they count for kills

I almost wasn't feeling this map in the test run, but finding the secret Plasma really makes it much more fun, especially knowing the map and approaching it with confidence. Never actually played Scythe X before, only the first two, but I can say that I'm seeing where Skillsaw got some of the influences for Valiant specifically.

I was actually feeling pretty downtrodden and lethargic today, but this gave me a little pick me up that I needed. It always feels good to sock a Lost Soul with Berserk so it goes flying.

I think mod music is cool, but most of the music for it sounds really electronic, which implicitly works better with scifi themed maps. If you want to do other settings, it can be hard to find a good track. I was mostly basing this idea on the state of NoReasons's speedmaps, which by his own acknowledgment skew toward techbases in part because they sound more techno. I think I'll use tracker music anyway, but for similar reasons may prefer similar themes. Pistol's arguably better, axe is much better, grenade launcher is the same but shooters faster, rocket launcher has faster killing potential, super nailgun is now an arcing railgun, lightning gun replacement may be worse with quad but can still clear a room without it.

I do like new weapons, even enjoyed replaying the original quake with them. While I love the old RL, the new one has its uses and you can wallclimb with it. It made me realize how much I relied on the vanilla rocket launcher for nearly everything. Also it's a sidegrade from the grenade launcher instead of making it obsolete.
No maps were broken for me, but I think I played the updated version. There was one broken secret in that one shitass map that had portals out the ass, don't remember the name.

I was agreeing with your post until this. Quake's default double barreled shotgun sucks, qbj3's looks and sounds better, and has a cool ricochet. But the pistol is stronger than the base shotgun, which makes it worse. There's no reason for it to have infinite ammo, it just encourages sniping, which you cold do with the default Quake shotgun just fine. It's the one weapon I heavily dislike. Nailgun is just better. Default super nailgun makes regular one mostly obsolete, not the case with the rebar cannon which is a completely different weapon. GL was unchanged. Rocket launcher is a sidegrade, you no longer can use it as your bread and butter but it's more situationally useful, and better differentiates itself from the GL which I don't think it needed to but whatever. Lightning gun never felt to me like the super weapon it's supposed to be and I think the replacement is better in that aspect. That said, I always though there was too much overlap in purpose among Quake's nailgun, super nailgun, and lightning gun anyway.

That's a level where you can stay far away from the buildings and kill about half of the monsters from afar with the pistol, including the vores and shambler. Xen is shorter in HL1, they massively extended that segment in Black Mesa and it's a lot of bullshit like fiddling with wire puzzles and extended fights with a super weapon with infinite ammo. Longjump module is simpler and better to use in HL1 as well, though it's an endgame item.

Yep, adding some more tools to this was a great idea. I'm capping the player to two sentry guns and two shield generators, but good lord is it fun to deploy two sentries at once and lock down a whole area.

For reference, I've made them fire every 2 tics and gave them 500 round mags. They're a bit tankier than stock (400 health) but I think it's only fair, they're a bit hard to come across.

The HECU in Black Mesa are faster, more accurate and shoot while moving, because they're basically reskinned combines of Half-Life 2. Hell they're so accurate that they make snarks useless because they just one tap them.
It's not only that the weapons feels worse (Sound/animation) either, they actually are worse, they don't shoot as fast, and you have less reserve ammo.

Coupled with the fact that the movement is slower and more slippery instead of fast and snappy slows the game down so much.
Half-Life 1 combat feels like a slightly slower, more "tactical" Quake. Black Mesa combat feels more like a modern shooter, and I say this in the most degatory way possible.
Also I hate the HL2 pprint they added in.
Look at some gameplay of Surface Tension in HL1 and Black Mesa and it's night and day.

Build looks similar to doom mapping (I never mapped for doom though, I opened up UDB few months ago and was overwhelmed by 162784 different buttons on my screen), but you can draw over your own map for overlapping geometry. It's obvious that a game much more complex than doom would have more complex editor but I don't think it's as bad as people make it to be.
In a week or so I got the hang of things and stopped breaking my map whenever. In few more I built up my muscle memory and then moved on to learning advanced features, tricks and all that fancy stuff, thankfully there's a really good documentation on it. In 6 months I released my first map. Took a while but it's big and not your average techbase as it usually happens with doom. The hardest part of duke mapping is making it interesting, drawing corridors and making slaughtermaps wouldn't fly good in duke community

Duke Advance's biggest faults are shitty controls, shitty resolution, lack of music and lag. Pc version fixes those since it's for eduke. My pleasure. It was removed in the first place not because I liked instacasting so much, but rather I couldn't figure out how to make it compatible with the hand animation in a way that makes sense. It was a long time ago. The technical aspect of it probably played a big role too. It was piss easy to reimplement it now with virtually no side effects so far, in part thanks to the magic/hotbar/event code having seen a lot of polish since then. Usually it pays off to wait until later to (re)implement something when the codebase's had time to mature from the first implementation (which is always undeniably shit, no exceptions).

I've been playing Reds Over World which I downloaded on a complete whim and it ended up being super fun. Similar to BoA in many ways but it's clearly not trying to be something Doom can't handle and is much better for it. And the setting being a goofy 1990s Red Alert style WW3 thing is great.

Can anybody recommend me some other Doom mods to play afterwards with high-precision combat? Just something with mainly straight-shooting guns and fewer explosives with high lethality. Headshots are a bonus.

He has three animations.
If he's at full health he'll always smash, but otherwise there's a 1/3rd chance of each animation playing at the start of an attack sequence.
After a left or right swing he has a 50% chance to go right into a swing from the opposite side. Otherwise he'll go back to his 'running' state and need to check whether or not he can attack again, which could result in a smash.

I don’t know if I played the previous Quake jam, but Violent Rumble was rather varied. There were some decent maps with neat “Quakecute” and interesting gameplay ideas, then there was Rusty Bucket Bay, and then above everything was CoffeeAchievers high quality stuff.

It was MAP25 - Steeple of Skeles. It was certainly amateurish, but he did kinda rip into it. His complaints about it having teleporting gobbledegook and saying elsewhere that he didn't like Gremlins is why, when it came time to do Sub Mortem, I made "Into King Boner's Manor" full of teleporting gremlins lol.
