i just beat this game and wish i had played it much earlier. damn what a game, i know it was marketed for "frat boys" but to me it plays like it was designed for blokes coming home late from the pub.
in the 90s and early 2000s in bongistan, if you came home late from the pub you would have almost certainly watched whatever alternative comedy-influenced TV show was on at that hour. so CBFD feels like the videogame-equivalent.
>collectathons are heavily reduced - instead a drunk scarecrow tells you about "context sensitive" pads where the player can produce a quest-vital object
>alternatively Conker will just happen to have a quest-vital object on his person anyway
>a bad-looking king is set up as the final villain but his motivation is that his sidetable is missing a leg and his chief scientist says he needs a red squirrel to prop it up but then you don't see him for hours and then this king dies before you can fight him anyway
>more subversion from the way HP and lives work - that chief scientist threw out his levitating chocolate invention all over the place and that's how you recover HP. the grim reaper hates his job and explains squirrels benefit from some similar provision as cats and their nine lives. he later gives you a shotgun
>level variety is so strong it feels like they considered several options and then said "all of them"
>actually quite well written dialogue (also more alternative comedy) despite the teenager-tier swearing at times, something they can't have taken lightly due to how much space the voicelines took up
i played the "uncensored" version which clearly has some custom dubbing inserted but it didn't bother me.

i guess everybody already played this game to death

It's kind of meh

Too much context sensitive gameplay, segment that must be repeated 3 times like giving the cheese to that rat at the beginning...

The worst of the 4 platformers of Rare for the N64 (Banjo kazooie,Tooie,DK64,Conkers)

>Too much context sensitive gameplay
i don't see the problem. it wasn't marketed at kids, who otherwise get those "alright go off and collect 10 of these to create an item you need". that stuff is a chore, and Rare knew they couldn't stuff the gameplay with chores.
there were only a few exceptions to that, like the cheeses for the rat.
>The worst of the 4 platformers of Rare for the N64 (Banjo kazooie,Tooie,DK64,Conkers)
i was thinking of playing another one of their games next, like Perfect Dark.

I started to play the uncensored version a while ago, weirdly the bleeped version sounds funnier to me so I went back to playing that instead.

I don't know why this game is getting so much hate lately, I think the varied gameplay styles are pretty fun and the story and humor are very funny and witty, maybe its too simple compared to the other Rare platformers but that was they were aiming for since there was criticism at Rare's previous games for getting too bloated or too complicated in how to obtain collectables.

actually i started playing Perfect Dark anyway. pretty cool that it has subtitles for both gameplay and cutscenes, my hearing is shit. also a widescreen mode.
>>12386274
that surprises me. i loved it. like i said, it feels like it was designed for blokes coming home late from the pub and want to watch alternative comedy but as a videogame. i really liked the writing.

idc what any revisionist says. This games a top 5 for the 64 and it controls great. Only annoying part is the war finale. Even the matrix shit only lasts like 10 mins and a bossfight with the ayylmao. Great piss takes on vidya.
>>
The official guide was pretty unique and funny, worth a read. The "liability waiver" still makes me laff

Perfect dark has been a favorite since I was a kid. Loved the hub world. Loved the aliens in it.
>>
>>12385967
It’s my favorite N64 game and one of the few games I’ve ever played that I consider to actually be “perfect”.

I hate to say it but I don't know how to into this game. I just seem to get bored of it and idk why. I played all the other titles you mentioned as a child but no longer have a real console. Every attempt I've emulated CBFD, the fps and stuttering quickly made it unplayable for me.

i was playing the N64 version but switched to a PC fan port because i can never go back to playing FPS with a controller.

I doubt any blokes were coming back from the pub and firing up a children's console to play a Rare game

The absolute distilled essence of copium CBFD produced then, and still does now, is remarkable.
>See, N64 isn't just for kids! The squirrel swears! He SWEARS!!
>>
Konkers is a solid rental. I'm glad I played it and even enjoyed the multi-player with my brother. I'll never replay it. I actually sold my copy to finance a switch 2.

>I doubt any blokes were coming back from the pub and firing up a children's console to play a Rare game
well yeah that wasn't the target market. but the british developers of this game could have had that mindset because i doubt they were "frat boys" themselves.

I only played the multiplayer with friends back in the early 2000s, fun as fuck

i had a go on that (on my own) and it seemed high potential. sad, i won't be able to actually play it for real with others for a while yet.

if i had known Perfect Dark was basically a comedy version of Deus Ex i would have played this much earlier too.

I vaguely remember being opposed to the idea of the game when I first heard about it, nevertheless I wound up renting it when it came out and enjoyed it greatly, eventually buying it and playing a ton of multiplayer. I tried Live & Reloaded when it came out, too, but it didn't have the charm of the N64 version. Berri's big ass was quite captivating, though.
>>
its one of the all time n64 classics. the matrix and dinosaur shit levels were hilarious and classic AF. the multiplayer being nazi bears killing people landing at normandy was hilarious and wild AF. the zombie/vampire levels were tough but fun. all the blood and shit were gratuitous and hilarious

never heard anyone talk bad about this game but I imagine its from the probably super expensive price of the cart nowadays and people being let down because they dont get it. or they're troons.

I got it when it was still new so that would have been like 01 or 02 maybe and it was the perfect thing at the time for a 12 year old kid.

Conks himself doesn't swear. Other characters do though.

>the multiplayer being nazi bears killing people landing at normandy was hilarious
i actually didn't know whether to laugh or be impressed with how 1-to-1 the game's Omaha Beach landing "parody" was, it was high effort.

>>12392253
yeah it was definitely impressive and kind of horrifying to be honest. I also thought I remember there being little jew bears or something you had to kill. it was very dark but wild as hell and fun

>I don't know why this game is getting so much hate lately,
Some edgy influencer decided to shit on the game for views and the usual human spambots immedietely came here to parrote out what their idol told them they should opine.
It's always the same story.

>12392297

I never finished Conkers Bad Fur Day, might've got halfway through. Me and a friend used to rent it and spent all of our time playing multiplayer.
>>
>>12392329
it has some difficulty spikes.
and then some areas where chocolate respawns constantly, so you can't really lose.
