How come there are so few classics on the GBA compared to GB/GBC and DS?
>>
Because it had 3 years of uncontested life and after that it barely got anything but SpongeBob shovelware because everyone had jumped ship to the DS. Why do you think?

>Why do you think?
I think I love WarioWare, Zero Mission, and a few RPGs but the rest of the library doesn't do it for me

>1500 games
>maybe 20-30 of them are good/worth playing
Is there a worse shovelware to quality software ratio on any other console?

i got ur classic right here buddy

They extended the life of the GB because Pokemon was such a hit. GBA should have come in earlier but was upstaged by its own unc.
>>
the GB/GBC library was garbage, why even mention it alongside the godly DS library
>>

Sifting through the GBA library is brutal.

I often wish to discuss DS games on /vr/

All of Nintendo's handhelds are solid/great. Except the Virtual Boy.

which warioware?

well, not really a close call but the gamecube also had a surprising amount of shovelware in spite of its poor sales. ESPECIALLY after 2004 where it basically began churning out pixar movie based games nonstop

Not a handheld

This is pretty subjective, also in this case you're couting the GBC as an extension of the GB, if you don't then they're pretty similar, as to why it feels GB and DS had more classics? It's simple, they had more time as Nintendo's main handheld than GBA or GBC. Also what (>>12386498) said, GB, GBC, GBA and DS were all excellent and had great libraries full of classics.

The original one, but Twisted! is fine too (if a little gimmicky)

Because you buy it to play SNES ports on.

When it comes to Nintendo handhelds, third parties tended to follow Nintendo's example.
And in the case of the GBA, the example was low effort rehashed outsourced sequels and gimped SNES ports.

Why wouldn't I just emulate the snes rom on my handheld?

NTA but I'll bite.

>Yoshi
>Final Fantasy Adventure
>Metroid 2
>Final Fnatasy Legend 3
>Blaster Master Boy
>Paperboy
>Marble Madness
Considering I didn't own the whole fucking library and kept it limited to excluding GBC and imports (since it wasn't region locked) on top of excluding some of the best games for the system, not too bad a list. Also left out a lot of ports since many of them were better on GG anyway. Then again, most of them "aged poorly" so Im sure it'll be met with "but x games are trash" cope.

>Pokemon Pinball
fuck, forgot it was GBC, exclude that to keep with the rest I guess.
>>
>>12390814
You were supposed to name GBC games. The main GB library is full of bangers obviously
>>
>>12391073
My point is that I could reach 25 without even needing to. Yes I know it was a pidgeonholed argument but I was responding to someone who pulled a screenshot from a rom list so I didn't feel the need since the GB and GBC are considered the same generation anyway.
>>
>>12386334
Is that true? GB and DS mog all obviously but is GBC objectively better than GBA? The castlevanias, fire emblems, metroids, advance wars, wario ware and all the impressive-for-the-time snes ports made me really want one as a kid. I actually owned a GBC and it had Metal Gear Solid, Mario Golf, the Oracles games, and colorized versions of gameboy games I’d already played to death. Those exclusives were gigabangers for sure but the Color had a pretty paltry library overall.
>>
>>12391170
from messing around with the full romsets for awhile one thing that stands out to me is that the gbc had somewhat better quality control on the low end, you were less likely to encounter something that's just absolute hideous trash like you would on the gba.
>>
>>12391284
The impression I get from this thread is that everyone is focusing on how much shovelware was on each console, which is really weird to me because who gives a shit? They all had classics on them, I just think the gba had about twice as many really good games on it as the gbc.

At the time, I thought the gbc felt like a fake system since a lot of the games were backwards compatible with the game boy and the ones that weren’t didn’t seem to be doing anything a regular gameboy couldn’t do besides color. I only bought mine because I couldn’t quite afford a gba, and I really wanted to play mgs and the oracles games (but I would’ve preferred playing them on an advance). GBA felt like a real generational leap and had a lot of games that seemed worth playing to me.
>>
>>12391326
GBC was only created as a stopgap to stall against the Neo Geo Pocket and WonderSwan while the GBA was still in development. You’re right, it’s hardly its own system, and not even Nintendo counts it as distinct from GB.
>>
>>12386334
because the system was primarily designed to be a platform for rereleasing old NES and SNES games, which itself was a selling point because back then game rereleases was unheard of. if you wanted to play an SNES game, you needed to hunt down a copy of the game and an SNES.
it was meant to be a Super Nintendo you could carry in your pocket, so its 'greatest hits' library mostly consists of rereleases and enhanced remakes of Super Nintendo games. in many cases, the GBA version is the definitive version of those games.
>>
>>12390783
because in 2001 chinkhelds didn't exist, moron. even PC emulators were in their infancy and you couldn't carry one of those with you in your pocket.
