I mainly liked collecting gems and combining them to make better gems. I just wish the game had a better payoff for getting perfect gems super early, like jewel golems or something.

Or maybe, it's too casual for you, which was the case for me, and in that case, something like PoE might be more your speed, but PoE isn't retro
Only way I can play 2 in present day is with mods, and even then I find it inferior to 3

Anyone play older versions of D2? I tried 1.06 recently and liked it. I liked the game having less item bloat. Melee is still just kind of crappy in D2 though. Even mods that add in melee splash damage, chance to miss and various other things just make it feel like you're at a disadvantage if you're not playing a ranged caster. D1 had the same problem and it doesn't feel like D2 improved on that too much except maybe making ranged enemies less of an issue.

You could surely get around the specific problem you describe. But yeah then you'd probably just run into some other tedious annoying thing and end up quitting anyway, because the game is fundamentally not very interesting.

I think the worst part of the Diablo games is the manual stat allocation paired with half of the stats being useless dump stats. Far fewer players would brick their characters if they were only responsible for choosing their skills.
