The PS2 and Xbox versions will always exist and you can still play them. This is aiming for a native PC port. The advantages:

>much less overhead to run the game (since you don't need to simulate a game console via emulation)
>potential for enhancements and bug fixes
>hacking and modding tools
>quality of life fixtures

Dreamcast downgrades make no sense. Dreamcast upgrades make sense - N64 or PS games to DC is cool and neat. The console also had a bunch of PS games released around the same time too.

Oh and emulators often include small input lag. Native ports remove that.

Depends on the game: bug and engine fixes are nice. Emulators work via a series of hackjobs if you want enhancements nad it works per game. So many PCSX2 60fps mods require you to:

>overlcokc the PS2
>find a specific cheat code to run the game at 60fps
>and the game's engine has to work at 60fps without issues

A native port simplifies this process entirely. many older games even up to the PS3 still had frame-rate tied to physics or effects as well.

>who cares

Well I do? Level editors can be used to create fan levels to give more content to a game.

>i fail to see the point of these decompilations...

Cuz you're IQ is in double digits and you can't think ahead. These games are almost all abandoned bby the original devs and publishers, but by decompiling the source code it belongs to the fans to do as they wish with it.

It's much easier to modify the source code than running binary.
>>
>>12388971
Emu enhancements are a series of hacks that are often delicate, cause issues, and break games, and are obtuse to impliment. I know they've been doing 60fps in PCSX2 for like 15 years or so, but they require codes and overclocking. And not all game engines support it.

You can create source ports with whatever additions and enhancements you like.

A real native port made using a decompilation project that covers all versions of the game has the potential to be easily the best version of the game.

Back then Europe would get the last version, which means all bugfixes including game breaking glitches, sometimes new content, but with the monkey paw of all censorship, executive complaints (like Capcom developing a good Nightmare in Christmas-themed DmC clone and Disney told them to make it easier in the american version) and some limitations (interlaced display, 50Hz aka slower game)

In a decompilation, everything is available in the source, so you could theoretically create your ultimate NTSC version that plays at full speed, has all languages, all of the content, with none of the censorship or the original slowdown and no restrictions on resolution or framerate. You could even do your own bugfixes.

"Quality of life" or "accessibility" too.
These terms are abused by game journalists who just want a difficulty mode with a god mode, and want other options to play the game removed or gimped so that their mode isn't "missing any content" (and if it's harder levels, they need to be made easier or removed altogether even for the normal/hard mode players.)
But at their core, quality of life should mean "i don't want the mandatory button mashing sequence the developers included to sell turbo controllers" or "i want this item to be an equippable item rather than something buried in some menu so that I can finish this water temple without going mad".
If you're feeling audacious, it could also mean "if there's no new content on the way back i want an instant warp back to the entrance when i finish this level"

"Accessibility" should be color blind modes, optional extra sound effects, and leaving the gamepad support open just enough so that the user can use extra controllers and keyboards (instead of telling them they can only control it with F1 or WASD/Ctrl/Shift/Space), not pandering to self-admitted retards.

Is it the ps2 or xbox version? It's very important because the xbox version has a bunch of extra content, and decompiler that version means other xbox games can be done too.

This is the big deal for me. The original FF was ramshackled together by someone who didn't properly understand 3D and nudged into compliance with the non-standard PS2 FPU. This means you need to turn ALL the compatibility options on in PCSX2 otherwise you get stuck on every bit of geometry and get fucked by ghosts with no capture circles because the ray tests fail.
The Xbox version is much harder than it should be because they didn't adjust the float calculations for the IEEE compliant x86 FPU so you get all the same problems baked in with the added hassle that nightmare mode is much less forgiving.
I assume the decomp is going to be xbox grade horseshit at first as they just blat the decompiled source straight into GCC, but hopefully over time they'll replace the ingame collision and raytest code with something more fit for purpose.
>>
>>12393431
Oh thanks for enlightening me about some of the issues I wasn't aware of. Yes, and the Decomp is focused on the PS2 version for now.

In-game for the PC port now loads 2D elements but not the full 3D models. It only loads collision data.
>>
>>12388612
We’re trying to save the Dreamcast with recomps
>>
A lot of 3D PS2-Xbox era horror games would do well with Decomps. The Siren games are great on paper but have jank. Smooth out the jank = better game.
>>
>>12388051

Quick reminder that DECOMPS dont mean PC ports. what you are looking for is a RECOMP. Decomps are required as a first step to get the Recomp. and not everyone can do that or will care.
>>
>>12393406
Sorry bro, but your phone isn't retro.

So yeah, say goodbye to that SotN decomp, all for nothing.
>>
>>12393897
So for those who don't know, that's the character's colision map. When they were first making RE2, the devs described the collision map as looking like a giant stick of tofu, so they added this bonus mode as a joke. When I was 15, I had no idea what tofu was.
>>
>>12388051
This is a cool decomp but I absolutely love the blurriness of the game on a real PS2 over CRT. It fits perfectly with the game. I will probably not play this, even though I love the game
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlbwJ9hgmaE

There's a guy who streams his SotN decomp sessions, and it looks like a huge pain in the ass a a lot of work. How is it that Sotn is stuck at like 35%, and these other projects are Fatal Frame or SH are near 100?

>There's not much benefit graphically from decomping a 2d game.

Graphically? The game has these silly little borders on the top and bottom. A proper source port could just get rid of them. This has been tried in some fan romhacks, but it's much easier to do in a proper port.

We can also have proper widescreen support. Proper 3D support for the few 3D elements. Scaling options.

Because:

>>
>Ico
>Shadow of the Colossus

These are the #1 priority for decomps. Rescue games from shitty remakes, and to make multiplayer functional. Netplay with 30 year old playstation games in 60fps is neat as heck!

The companies gave up on these old games, so fuck em. They belong to the fans now.
