As we all know the best genre of games are the ones that involve large bi-podal weapons of war(treads and multi-legged variations are also accepted). So what /vr Mecha are we currently playing?

Wolf Fand deserves some love, available on PS1 / Saturn but not in English or the Arcade version. Sort of like Contra with forced scrolling, Atomic Runner is similar.

Ranger X is another great one, looks incredible for a Sega Genesis game, feels like it would fit right at home in an early 90's arcade cabinet. Very unique control scheme, there is no jump, only a jetpack that activates when you press up but overheats if you use it to long. Left and right control your movement but don't turn you. A and C do that letting you fire left and right, B is special in whatever direction you are facing. It sounds weird but it gives you a lot of control, being able to immediately go vertical and fly around or retreat while still firing.

I second Ranger-X. Top 20 Genesis game for me.

Looks very cool! Guessing the language barrier is not to much of an obstacle?

Anyone played this before? It came out in PAL region and Japan but not NA for some reason

That design goes hard
>>
>>12389814
Not really no. You mostly miss out on story. The English arcade version Rohga Armor Force removes all the dialog but it also cuts a system that lets you choose your next mission and go different routes for re-playability. Instead they string all the levels together which doubles the game length from about 30min to an hour, lets you see the game in one go but it can kind of drag for an arcade title. Either version is fine to play.

Currently addicted to the Bangai O series.
Playing through Spirits right now.
Still can't wrap my head around the Getter Dragon-esque design they gave to Bangai O on Dreamcast, I like it but I don't get why they did it, then went back to the more sober design of the 64 original on Spirits and Missile Fury
I also wish they didn't get rid of the soulful wacky late 90s comedy anime style on the non-retro games.

>there is no jump,

You lie. Ranger X jumps by crouching, then pressing up. The bike jumps by holding down to charge, then releasing.

In addition, at the start of the final stage, one of the first enemies you face can be kicked to death to drop the best weapon in the game. enjo (the others won't die from kicking).

I always wished they put Missile Fury on other platforms since I didn't want to get another Xbox 360 just to play it after mine broke but recently I set up Xenia which runs it without issues.
>>
>>12389882
Yeah same, I never even bought any Xbox console so there's a few games I haven't played yet. I'm going to emulate Missile Fury once I finish Spirits so it's good to know it runs well.
My main gripe with MF is how it looks... kinda lifeless compared to the 2D graphics style, but I don't doubt it's still fun as fuck and I suppose the 360 capabilities lets it get really really crazy
>>
>>12389895
It's definitely all about the actual gameplay and less about flair. Basically just a bunch of levels to play and that's it but the gameplay is really nice. Twin sticks works really well for Bangai-O after all.

I've been playing Bulk Slash over the weekend and I'm liking it a lot. Already finished it a couple of times and now I'm searching the stages for the other pilots I've missed. There was a PS1 game called Love & Destroy that I was obbsesed with when I was young that reminds me a lot of it.

Nah, the best weapon in the game is the Proton Cannon. Feels great to nearly shot bosses with it.

The shield is just very useful on that specific level because it's full of death traps which are extremely difficult, borderline impossible to properly dodge, so you either take hits and rely on the plenty of health items, or use the shield.

Also fun fact, the japanese version of the game has a game breaking bug. On the final level to boot. It got fixed in the overseas release.

the shield deals heavy damage to enemies you ram. it's just a bit ridiculous considering you also have full godmode.

it's also the only weapon that works while you're fused with the bike, allowing you to combo it with the tracking machinegun

Pulled the trigger(heh) on purchasing a set of twin sticks a few years back. Took a little bit to get used to it but 9nce i did it absolutely made the game that much more enjoyable to play. Can never go back to just using a regular controller.

I got filtered by Assault Suit Leynos 2 on Saturn by stage 3

I heard the DC game is pretty much unplayable without the sticks, any truth to that? the Saturn game was awkward but manageable.
>>
>>12390465
Only own the Saturn Twinsticks.
I had the DC Vitual-On back when it was new but I only ever played it with normal pad. Played fine for me? That was 25yrs ago tho so my memory is spotty.

I love Bulk Slash. Are there any other games that play like this, where you can switch between fighter and mech mode?
>>
>>12389609
I rage quit this game so many times. People say it's easy but I really struggled with the 2inch draw distance. Really could have used a checkpoint save system.
>>
>>12389609
>bi-podal?
Bipedal. I'd also have accepted simply biped, though the implications would be slightly preternatural
>>
>>12391614
Love & Destroy for the PS1 is probably the closest you can get, at least thematically. You pilot giant robots and have to grow affinity with the girls. They play nothing alike though, L&D is more of a boss rush and feels more like an "Evanelion" clone, but still worth a look if you want something in that category.

>>12391691
The fan translation of Bulk Slash incorporated twin stick controls. If you're playing on emulator, I highly recommend to set your controller to twin sticks (both in the emulator and in-game). It improves the controls dramatically, bringing it to more modern standards using both analogs to control the ship.

Well, gameplay wise you could try the Macross VF-X games. You have space and ground combat with a transforming mecha. Through still, not quite the same as bulk slash.

>where you can switch between fighter and mech mode?
Robotech on GC. Played the hell out it back in the day. Also helped that I was watching the tv series around the same time.
>>12391821
I have the twin sticks and the fan translation. If it is truly better control wise as you say I will definitely have to try it out.
