Earthbound didn't make money in the West because they spent too much time and money localizing it and then charged way too much money for it.Contrary to popular opinion, Earthbound is not some groundbreaking showcase of what the SNES or JRPGs can do/be. It is fundamentally not a Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6. It's just a fun little quirky Japanese RPG, the kind that there are hundreds of, the kind that don't usually get translated because there would be no way to recoup the cost of translating them.
