I did not care for the Metal Gear solid games.
>>
The gameplay isnt that good, but thats not why you play Metal Gear

The gameplay is the only thing that saved those dogshit games.

my overall complaint with the series is that they didn't seem to put much importance on balancing. it's clear they want the default to be a very casual launch window experience, anyone and their mother can stumble through the story and if you want anything more out of it you need to make your own fun and play with your own house rules. like not abusing the shit out of the tranq gun.

Is the joke that nobody asked peter for his opinion but he said it anyways? Dude, that's HILARIOUS
>>
Is this the thread for those that never played the games at all or played one game for 20 minutes??? I want to LARP too!!

"The games have bad gameplay"

"Story is why I play the games"

"World building and atmosphere is overrated in games"

"Story was confusing to me"

"The gameplay is the only thing it is good for"

"Atmosphere and world are pretty good but that is it"

Pretty sure they all have their own built in extra sets of rules to unlock special items. European Extreme in MGS3 is more on the nose about it.
>>
>>12391694
yeah you caught me overreaching a bit, there are features for advanced play but it's more of a tacked on remix than the core game actually being well thought out and challenging the player. there's never a point where tranq sniping stops making sense.

My favourite Metal Gear
>>
I don't think I have played the games since launch but I watched someone play them for the first time recently and it reinforced my opinion on the series even more.
People like to poke fun at the repeating patterns across the games but it's kind of crazy how much of the series was already in place with Metal Gear 2 and then the Solid series just kept iterating on it.
I usually do not care about story in games at all either but this is one of the few that I choose to engage with. I genuinely question how much influence that series has had on my own mind and character. Mei's proverbs for example, or the entirety of the story and characters in MGS3 intermixing with real world events and concepts that are still applicable irl today.
The versatility of the games is also insane to me. It's labeled as a stealth game but you can play it a variety of ways and still have fun getting through it.
I always thought it was wild that the people in my friend group that would get together to LAN Halo and CoD had also sunk just as much time into Metal Gear Solid as me but they played it completely differently and still had fun with it.

I respect it as a good game. It feels like it was crafted with intent in every aspect. Whether people like it or not I think it's hard to deny effort and detail went into every part of the package.

Personally I wanted to get into them but like, where the fuck do you even start? There is so many different answers i've been given to this exact question, feels to unncessary and tedious just to get into a franchise.

3 is the first game in the canon timeline
i reccomend playing the recent remake version
>>
>>12392309
>>12392436
3 is pretty good with it's gameplay and story too because it requires no knowledge of the other games, as it works as an independent story too. I'd say any non-remake version is good too, it has been released as some kind of a hd version on basically every console in existence. Unless the remake price has already come down significantly so it's no more goddamn 70-80€. Even half of that is too much because you can just buy some hd collection with other games too for cheaper.

Alternatively you can start from mgs1 and then play games in release order, but play 1 before 2 either way to get the so-called intended experience.

Don't play mgs4 but if you really want to play it, play it after finishing the first three because otherwise the (useless) story is not understandable.

>feels to unncessary and tedious just to get into a franchise.
are you retarded?
>>
>>12392309
so ignoring port emulation issues it is very simple, play 1-3 in release order, the psx version of 1. this is the core of the series that's non controversial. if you enjoy those then you can explore farther. play 4, peacewalker, v or explore the 2d games and ghost babel.
>>
>>12392436
>3 is the first game in the canon timeline
it's a prequel. it is meant to be played as a prequel. no director would ever advise you to ignore the continuity of their films and take it upon yourself to play in canonical order
>>
>>12392309
Why wouldn’t you just stay with MGS1 and go there? Anyone who tells you to play them out of release order is a retard. The future games rely heavily on the fact that you have played the previous entries; if you start with MGS3 you will be lost.
>>

>no director would ever advise you to ignore the continuity of their films and take it upon yourself to play in canonical order
well at least you recognize MGS is a movie game franchise
>>
>>12392309
play MGS1
ignore the rest, they all suck
>>
>>12392610
>>12392621
The thing is that you can start with either mgs1 or mgs3 because both are self-contained stories and with mgs3 you only miss some easter eggs but can still enjoy the story and explore further. Mgs3 had basically modern graphics when it was released and better gameplay too even if obviously flawed but pretty good, so it can be easier or modern audiences to start with than mgs1 on ps1 emu. Which is not a bad place to start either.

Only mgs2 and mgs4 are games where you will be completely lost with the plot if you start there.

>so it can be easier or modern audiences to start with than mgs1 on ps1 emu.
I dispute how beneficial this advise is. I think playing mgs3 first is just setting up a serviceable game in mgs1 for a worse impression besides the fact that you're going to miss a lot of the circumstance of 3 going in blind. it's built on you having the preconception of bigboss as an infamous character.
