Literally the opposite for me, played it when I was 12 and hated it. Came back to it 3 years ago, honestly the most fun I had with a video game in a long long time. Unfortunately I am not enjoying the sequels as much.

A game can be good and fun without being soulful. I don't think "SOUL!" when I think of Tomb Raider. It's functionally good but not because there's a ton of soul behind it.

In older games, lot of stuff is hand crafted. Trees, rocks, patch of grass etc. are meticulously placed by hand. Nowadays the engine generate these automatically, so a lot of games look alike, thus the lack of soul.

If the creators are talented, it usually is.

Modern assets are often obtained from an open marketplace and then modified to be consistent with the style and theme for the game. The results can be effective for a given game, but lacks evidence of developer passion.

Nostalgia and personal attachment are the main factors when judging or caring about an old game.
I never played Ocarina of Time or Tomb Raider when I was a kid. Both felt meh to play when I first tried them on emulators.
