Why does this board hate the Sega Saturn anyways? I never understood the "how could X save the Saturn" memes considering its a great console with a vast library, and most of the games were made by Japan so you weren't getting the typical 90s western slop that companies somehow got away with at the time.
>>
Reactionary meme for filtered anons, never mind them
>>
It's mostly 1 person doing most of the anti-Saturn shilling.
But yes over the years the SoA narrative propaganda made most cattle start being more critical of the Saturn than how it used to be, where back then was a beloved console for fans of the hobby

I didn't even notice when I was looking for a picture to use for the post, mania on the saturn would of been great though. I heard some homebrewers got minecraft ported onto it

If it's a great console with a great library why did it fail so spectacularly despite being the successor to the popular Genesis?
>>
The Saturn had the best quality ratio of Gen 5.
>>
>>12396259
>that amount of shitty arcade ports
Sad.

Just play MAME
>>
>>12396214
I'm just glad because everywhere else on the internet sucks the Saturn's dick like no one's business so coming here feels like a breath of fresh air. I don't hate the Saturn, I had one as a kid, but it gets tiring always seeing the same opinion.
>>
>>12396214
Saturn is the most popular console on /vr/. It's bigger than super nintendo, n64, ps2, ps1, xbox, gamecube, etc, etc. It was subject of a poll a few years ago. People genuinely argue and win that the saturn is a better console than n64. The arguments always end with 64 fans acting like babies and throwing tantrums. This kind of thing was unthinkable 10 years ago, it's now the mainstream opinion on 4chan that Saturn is an amazing system.

Anti-saturn threads are made by auster who is an unfunny nintendo fanboy that reposts the same dull jokes.

"Saving the Saturn" is a retarded modern youtube induced opinion, brought to you by the same people who say things like "Why should I play game X when game Y exists?" (because they never play games plural), who only play and talk about what's currently trendy to talk and play (remember when everyone was 'discovering' Donkey Kong 64?), mostly games that were in the top 20 best sellers and which have modern ports, who find "politically problematic" content in 30 years old games, who think that games 'age' or 'hold up', who now think that anything before the 5th gen is 'unplayable', and who are so uncultured that they are baffled that the Dreamcast controller, a '6th gen console', only has analog stick.

You can ignore all their opinions. In a matter of years the trends will shift towards 7th gen nostalgia and we'll finally be left alone among actual old games enjoyers.
>>

>why did it fail so spectacularly
I disagree, it was a big hit in Japan, so it didn't have this world-ending failure that this board likes to claim it did. That's like saying the mega drive failed because it wasn't successful in Japan even though it was a hit in the west.
>>
>>12397372
Really overestimating the "success" of the Saturn in Japan again? It did terribly barely beat the n64 by 1%

This same logic can apply to the barely differing percentages of the mega drive and NES in the west, it was and still is a successful retro console and thus it never "failed". You can live in fantasy land if you like, but it sold 5.75 million units which was the bestselling console in the entire japanese market so i'm hardly overselling it.
>>
Most of us grew up in the console wars. Even if you were a zoomer whose first console was the gamecube, there still was a sense of "xbox is cooler", "playstation is better" type of banter between kids. Picking the "wrong" console at that age set you apart from the others (this is of course completely inconsequential, but if you're a kid, it's a huge deal.)

Nowadays nobody really cares about which console to pick because they all play the same games and look the same anyway and people have a lot fewer hang ups about "kiddy games" vs "adult games" as they did back then since every console now has both.

Back then it mattered if a console "failed". It doesn't matter at all now. You can play any game you want on any console whether you own it or not. You're not an early adopter, your parents aren't investing in one machine that's going to last you 5-6 years, you're not betting that your machine will get a better library than the other machine at the end of the road. None of that matters anymore. You can just go play a 32x game without having to suffer the consequences of betting on the wrong console.

But the mentality of that era still survives. It's like that with everything. We always interact with the new era with the mentality of the older era because we don't notice the new era has overtaken the old until the old no longer exists.
>>
>>12397385
>it was and still is a successful retro console and thus it never "failed".

It's one of the biggest console flop of all time that's the reality
>>
>>12397430
>It's one of the biggest console flop of all time that's the reality
That's not remotely true and you know it, I can name bigger failures at the top of my head, even Nintendo's Wii U in the modern era failed harder.
>>
>>12397450
It sold better lmao
>>
>>12397429
No one knew what the fuck a Xbox was until the 360
>>
>>12397453
Because the saturn is an arcade console with mostly japanese arcade culture in mind, while the Wii U had western and global appeal and still didn't perform that well. The Saturn did better, simple as.
>>
>>12397429
What even is the current era? Playstation and Xbox being identical while Nintendo and PC get a few exclusives but it doesn't really matter because kids would rather play Roblox on their phones?
>>
>>12397457
>>
>>12396214
Unless you like arcade games the library just isn't that good. Same with Dreamcast. It seems with both those systems Sega really leaned into their arcade origins with those libraries. There was just very little reason to own a Saturn or an N64 with both the quality and variety of PSX's library at the time.
Basically, PSX>>>>>>>>Saturn>N64
>>
>>12397461
>no you see it actually did better even if it did worse because it's a shitty console that didn't appeal to anybody
So the 3DO was a massive success because it was made for FMV enjoyers in mind? Lmao

N64 is better than Saturn, at least you get real quality games like OoT instead of 2.5D space shooter #102
>>
>>12397473
>N64 is better than Saturn
Saturn won, and it had better games. The only notable N64 games was melee and SM64.
>>
>>12397470
I'm not that guy I'm just saying your argument is retarded, thing A sells more or less than thing B and that's it
>>
>>12397465
I had all 3 consoles and had more fun with Saturn and N64 than PS1 during 1997/1997. PS1 I mostly used for anime licensed games, Saturn and N64 had more solid titles, especially the 1st party.
1998 was a better year for PS1 with MGS but I still played N64 more that year
>>
>>12397475
>saturn won
Only in Japan because of shitty eroges? Worldwide the N64 won second place
>>
>>12397481
Nice fanfic, all the good Saturn games are japanese exclusives
>>
>>12397465
>Unless you like arcade games the library just isn't that good. Same with Dreamcast. It seems with both those systems Sega really leaned into their arcade origins with those libraries

Actually the Saturn is the least arcade focused Sega console by far, there are tons of J-RPG ,visual novel and eroge
>>
>>12397486
>all the good Saturn games are japanese exclusives

That's mostly a cope by segatard trying to explain why the Saturn fail in the west

Almost all big sega games released in the west

Sounds like cope, someone owning things don't make them collectors. Especially if they bought it when it was relevant and not an item for specific fans of Retro Games
