How does one soft mod a ps1? Is there an external drive that works like an hdd? I'm only aware of using Tonyhax to play burned discs.

Personally I just emulate. I used to have the same mindset, that eventually I'd have consoles for each generation with some of my fav games, but the sheer convenience of just emulating the games on superior hardware heavily outweights every single pro of having the original hardware. And if you're just going to hook them to a modern TV anyways, that's more of a reason to go full convenience and just emulate them. It's not like you're going to be building a physical game collection alongside it.

All you need to be able to play every major 7th gen and prior console is a PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and Xbox.
A hacked PS3, even a slim, will play the vast majority of PS1/PS2 games with no problems, but if cobra isn't good enough for you (google it), you can also just use a real PS2, they aren't that expensive.
PS3 will output video natively via HDMI or composite, and you can emulate everything pre-sixth gen on it but Saturn. It should be your home for NES/SNES/Genesis/PS1/N64/GB/GBC/GBA.
The Wii will play all Wii/GC games, so that handles all the Nintendo stuff that PS3 can't emulate well.
Xbox will unfortunately require both consoles as the 360s OG Xbox emulation is pure shit for most games.
If you actually care about DS games, get yourself a used New 3DS XL, it will run ALL 3DS/DS/GBA games natively with no emulation.

There are better ways to do all of this, but if you want to do it cheap with devices that natively output HDMI AND Composite without mods this is the way to do it. A PS3 alone will give you access to more games than you can play in a lifetime.
