Does anyone play spiderweb software's avernum games? Yeah greed and glory was released last year but it plays like the original back in 2005. Ruined world was good too. I remember playing avernum 2 demo on my windows XP computer as a kid.
What makes the stories so compelling to continue with?
And why is archer so overpowered?

They're good games I guess. I played avernum 1 a while ago for a few hours. The only thing I dislike is the artstyle though. Everything looks super small.

Avernum is underrated as hell. Looks dated in a not good way, but plays better than half the modern CRPGs people hype.

>plays better than half the modern CRPGs
The rewards just feel crunchy.
>Generic rpg has you fetch quest some leather
>Reward is 15gp
>Avernum has you fetch quest some leather
>Have to delve into lizard dungeon with lava plumes to get it
>See pick up another quest within the dungeon to save some boy
>Reward is 200gp and a cuirras with 45% poison resist.

Love em, Exile/Avernum and Geneforge are more engaging than any CRPG released in the last 15 years.
>>
Played and loved the first 2 Exile games, but I haven't tried the third after I heard it has a time limit.

Dude, you can finish the game twice before the time limit even start to matter, and even then you only lose meaningless side quests. You HAVE to try to not progress.

>Geneforge
I tried a geneforge game for an hour or 2 and it didnt click the same as avernum for me.
Maybe its missing that charm?

I remember playing 1 quite a lot 15-ish years ago.
But I also remember having a very slow start.

i prayed Blades of Exile fan made modules/maps. and got filtered. seems like they expect you to make cookie cutter 6 man teams to survive any battle.that and playing like an obscure graphic adventure game where you gotta go pixel/tile hunting and use everything on anything to figure out the plot progression.
but like with Neverwinter Nights modules you can transfer characters across various modules making some of them easier once you have a levelled up team.
>>12397882
still haven't play the GeneForge series though i bought the old versions on GOG.
>>
>>12398860
in Geneforge it's just you and a bunch of summons. it's more Fallout inspired so also more dialogues and different ways to finish quests

This is a good breakdown of part of why I find Avernum substantial and enriching, thanks anon. Oh and for the record I disagree about the graphics. I think they do look charming for the era.

Exile centers around team building and questing while Geneforge revolves around worldbuilding and picking a side, they're quite different;
If you ever try Geneforge again, go with the Shaper class, so that exploring is more rewarding as you'll get stronger critters to create.

I'm in the fields north of cotra in avernum 4. Getting a little sick of killing the chitarach bugs, and i dont even have a quest for them yet.

Nice, I finished my run recently and getting lost in the underground killing bugs for an hour straight was one of the "highlights".

Truth, loved how vibrant the colors were in Exile. In Avernum it's all gray and washed out.
>>

This exile game is old as.
They've re done avernum and geneforge, but not exile. Was it not as popular as the anons in this thread say it is?

>Was it not as popular as the anons in this thread say it is?
i recalled it was well-reviewed on online people back in the 2000s. maybe it just didn't earn enough money for the spiderdev to give a damn?

in many ways avernum is already similar to exile.
