I see a lot of threads on here about Mario 64, Crash or Banjo Kazooie... but not enough love for my favorite of the 3D platformers... Rayman 2.The Rayman world is so whimsical, strange and odd. It easily has the best texture work of any gen 5 game. I find it controls better than Mario or Banjo, and I think ranged combat is a better way to add action to a platformer than melee since you can keep moving while shooting.Let's have a Rayman thread.
>>12397849I love the colors in this game.
The only time I've seen Rayman 2 being discussed here is with the "what's the best version of the game" thread which most people agree is the Dreamcast version (some may prefer PC or Revolution and sometimes a weirdo comes in prefering the PS1 version).I have beaten almost every version of Rayman 2 except the IOS version because I don't like touch controls, and it's still one of my fav games ever, even replayed it not so long on NSO.
>>12397874I struggle to find the words to explain what I love about its tone / aesthetics. It's cartoony, but doesn't feel as childish or silly as Mario or Banjo. It has super detailed texture art, that looks like it came out of an animated disney movie background painting. The world is just so delightfully weird though... Lums are a grade A collectible... grabbing little glowing fairies is great. Globox is a nice fat reptilian thing. Teensies are hilarious and strange. Polokus the bubble dreamer is one of the weirdest... the god of this land is a fat scaly creature with giant arms, blue jeans, a magical top hat and he dreams reality into existence??I love the robot pirate aesthetic and seeing the contrast between the steampunk robot pirates and their industrialization versus the fairy dreamland forests and swamps of the world.
>>12397874>weirdo comes in prefering the PS1 version).Buddy, psx sold 5 million psx console units in Spain, is the version that most of the people played (eiter original or piracy)
I'm not saying it's the best version, but there plenty of reasons why people have a soft spot for the PS1 version:>Best version of the Hall of Doors. Changes the layout to be more cosmic and multi-dimensional than the N64/PC version. Lots of interesting camera angles. Dreamcast's Crash Bandicoot-style "Isle of Doors" is a huge step down. >Full voice acting rather than gibberish. >Repetitive sanctuary levels either trimmed or joined onto other stages. Merging Whale Bay with the Water/Ice Sanctuary makes the whole level feel very surreal.>Final boss fight is a lot better than the originalIf I had to preserve one version of Rayman 2 for future generations, it would probably just be the original PC version or Dreamcast. But despite its graphical shortcomings, it does feel strangely more refined in some ways. It even came out after the Dreamcast port. Anyway, great game even if there are slightly too many swamp levels. The exact same art team went on to do Beyond & Good Evil and it very much shows.

Underrated multiplayer game.
