What bosses did you have a lot of trouble defeating as a kid, and do you think their difficulty would hold up?

Most of the bosses that gave me the most trouble as a kid weren’t so bad when I revisited them. A lot of times the trick is just to level up more and get better gear if it’s an RPG. Some others required quick reflexes but weren’t as challenging as the hardest bosses I’ve faced in more recent games, largely due to having a limited movepool.

As a kid I couldn't even get past level 1 of most games.

I used to rent Wonderboy 3 a bunch and the 2nd boss I found really hard, I think I only beat him once or twice and never got up to the next boss normally. I was pretty young, like 7. The place I rented games would write down cheats/passwords and put them in the box with the game and there's one that gives you all the animals and items from the start so I still have fun exploring around with that stuff.

Nothin personal, kids

I remember struggling with Neo Zeed in Revenge of Shinobi before I figured out the double jump shuriken move.

Definitely Super Mecha Sonic at the end of Knuckles' Story, this guy was fucking hard primarily because he had so much variety in his moves even if they were predictable.

also the fact you had a really short window to hit him before he went super again, and he could counter everything. Staying in the distance, he uses projectiles, go under him and he goes into a ball, stay in the middle as he sways and he'll just launch himself into you.

I remember struggling with several bosses in Super Mario RPG, which is one of the easiest RPGs ever. The cake in Marrymore, Yaridovich, and the Axem Rangers in particular were tough for me. None of them are particularly tough for me now, even on runs where I don't level much. Culex is of course the hardest boss, but even then he's not that difficult if you have the best gear.

On another note, FF9's Ozma is ALWAYS a bit of a bitch due to the fact that he's so fucking random and he gets more turns than you, so even a high level, well prepared team can get fucked in the first couple of turns just because the RNG decided you needed to die.

I still do not know how to beat Sonic/Shadow at the end of Sonic Adventure 2. I always just get a lot of lives, then go in and mash the homing attack until one of us dies.

For the first three attacks you can just spindash into him, for the last 2 just spam homing.

Gruntys fight was brutal for 8 year old me. I think it was the only time a video game made me feel frustrated, it took me a long time to finally beat it. The fight is so fucking long and the fireball spam in the last phase is completely bullshit. Whats funny is that theres nothing in the game that prepares you for this, nothing even remotely similar in difficulty.

just beat him again now first go after not playing it for 20 years or something. If you have a few potions and the goblin armor then it's pretty easy. I think I didn't know how to get that armor when i was younger and probably ran out of potions before I got there

I don’t think I beat any optional super boss as a kid, they all seemed insurmountable back then. For many of them, it’s just a matter of reaching max level, at which point they aren’t much harder than any other boss. Getting to max level can be a chore in any rpg even with the best strategies online, so I can understand why my child self didn’t do it.

Bowser in SMW, as a kid it took me a lot of tries and got me really nervous every time.
Nowadays I dance around him and beat it effortless, but back when I was a kid I struggled with being precise with the upward-throwing aiming mechanic

Rare did not fuck around when it came to final bosses, especially in the 3D era. I dont think as a kid that I ever beat Gruntilda in Tooie without using a cheat code.

>especially in the 3D era
Must be, because in the 2D era I don't remember having any trouble with K. Rool in the first DKC. It's in fact one of the easiest final bosses ever.
>>
>>12398434
I still can't beat the final boss for Mega Bomberman, Bagulaa. His 2nd & especially 3rd form are just cheap as fuck. Third form requires the purple Louie or you auto-lose, but even then you need split-second perfect timing.

Mega Man 7, Wily. Growing up made it go from impossible to hard but doable.

These stupid worm bosses always filtered the fuck out of me in Zelda games, but Moldorm in ALttP specifically was the worst because he knocks you out of the arena and resets his health when it happens. I'm just bad at reacting dynamically to an enemy that just spergs around a room like this.

Moldorm is probably the reason I don't even remember the dark world half of ALttP that much, I'm not sure but I think I only ever beat him once as a kid.

Kaptain K. Rool in the sequel, however, is quite a bit tougher. I recall it taking me many, many tries to beat him back in the day. He wasn't quite as hard in the third, but still not a pushover. I can beat them all in one try now, but I do have to kind of lock in for the Kaptain.
>>
Can't remember what specifically was hard about him but Retinite was the Chrono Trigger boss I looked forward to the least.

That reminds me, Magus was a major stumbling block for me when I first played it. He's not that bad now, but some time ago I tried a low-level run, and he was BY FAR the hardest boss in the game under that challenge (until Lavos himself, that is, and only if you don't take Magus to fight him).
