According to Cho Ren Sha 68k developer, if you use autofire in STGs that don't have it built in, you didn't beat the game.
>>
Why is it so hard to make a worthwhile thread on /vr/ that people will actually want to participate in instead of attracting those who say "great use of the board, champ"?
>>

I'm so sorry
>>

>>12403582
There are a couple people on this board who are about to get very, very triggered, to the point of full blown meltdown. These people can be baited into giving endless seething (You)'s, so with minimal babysitting, this thread could easily hit the bump limit. Even with this preemptive callout they won't be able to help themselves.

>The concept of autofire did not exist in older STGs
Sure, but automatic weapons did.

>Manual firing is a distinct skill from...
Indeed, but I do not believe that he refers to mashing. CRS rewards you for doing it with a fast, but not unreasonable rhythm. There are similar historical examples. My favorite is Metal Black.

If you think this thread is about mashing, you took the bait. It's just a based man talking about how firing your weapon should feel meaningful.
>>
>>12403581
He's got the right idea with semi auto. Hold to keep firing bursts, but rapid presses can be faster.
>>
>>12403582
That's short for champion.
>>
>>12403910
What I understand is that auto fire would be slow, but tapping fast wouldn't be faster than autofire. The translator is probably missing a few neurons.
>>
>>12403581
Retarded argument aside, you don't want autofire in most games anyway. Timing kills and screen clears is part of the game. It's a self imposed challenge if anything.

>>12403582
Shmup threads are always dogshit, but it's easy to bait the same couple of retards that haven't moved on since the 80s.
>>
The best shmups allow for a fixed maximum number of your projectiles on screen at any given time, thus penalizing lack of accuracy and rewarding point blank shooting.

It depends on the game.
For example in Fantasy Zone you shouldn't use turbofire since there's an item in the shop designed for that purpose; R-Type has charge shots so you don't need to mash outside of a few areas; Cho Ren Sha 68K has burst fire so you can mash a lot slower.
On the other hand Darius or Raiden have no autofire and expect you to mash most of the time with no alternatives.
There's no interesting challenge in mashing, you're just ruining your hand for no reason.

Extensive button presses is why I will never play ANY rhythm game and why I retired from fighting games. My hands hurt now dude and when you get older your hands will hurt too. I don't play cho ren sha and I don't play mars matrix for the same reason. Thank god shmup players are sane and allow autofire.
>>
>>12404096
The Windows version of Cho Ren Sha allows auto fire now.
>>

He does have a point, when JAMMA became a standard it was active choice from the developers to not implement autofire on two button games.
Strikers 1945 II is late as 1997 and does not have autofire despite only being a two button game and there is no autofire through the dip switches.
Then we have games like Mars Matrix where the games gimmick is everything is done with one button.

These were arcade games they were designed for big arcade button, its not that bad.
I watched a video of some top korean players playing Strikers 1945, II etc at some arcade and they had a specific technique for the continuous firing. Unfortunately I cannot find this video

I play with stick, you gotta think about it in terms of how much you're pressing a button. Like obviously a shmup is not a one and done affair and I don't want to press a button tens of thousands of times when I'm learning a shmup. Like even the missile rhythm minigame on bosses in rayforce got pretty exhausting by the time I 1cc'd. I tried completing darius gaiden with default autofire and my arms were fucking pumped by the time I got to the end of the run, felt like I just got finished lifting weights. Like who is really doing this shit and why
>>
>>12403581
Honestly if you have to use auto fire you're just weak. Build strong thumbs and tap the button like a man.
>>
>>12404239

The solution is to have each press shoot a burst that can be rhythmically chained, or have a charge-up weapon automatically start when you let go of the fire button
>>
>>12405332
>>12405332
The solution is to use autofire and simply have different categories for scoring/survival, just mention if it's used or not.
Simple as.

Perhaps, but as much as I respect fast tapping I'm willing now to not truly beat the game if it means saving my old arthritic hands.

For some older games though I refuse to use it, because it totally breaks the balancing. If it's mostly just a convenience I think it's fine though.
>>
>>12405509
>Perhaps, but as much as I respect fast tapping I'm willing now to not truly beat the game if it means saving my old arthritic hands.
This is understandable because you literally can't help it. But people who are capable but still insist on using autofire are simply weak.
>>
If the balance of your arcade game somehow gets broken by autofire, your game is shit and completely unbalanced. Mashing isn't a worthwhile "skill" and nothing good comes out of it, either for the player or even for the fucking controller you're using. No amount of seething and coping and mental gymnastics can negate this fact.
>>
>>12403581
Sorry but I value not having hand pain down the road more than I value gamer cred.
>>
>>12403581
>Developing carpal tunnel is actually a skill and good for you!
>>
>>12405983
There's nothing wrong with balancing your shmup on not having autofire.
>>
>>12405983
Why don't shmoops just remove a shoot button and only keep bombs? Just have your ship constantly shooting standard shots all the time without holding down a button.
>>
>>12403581
>the concept of autofire did not exist in older STGs, and you could only fire as rapidly as your fingers could tap.

That's a lie. Players came up with all kinds of ways of having DIY autofire. Fuck off.
>>
>>12403581
>Manual fire mechanics were on the verge of dying out!
It was dying out for a reason. No one wants to damage their fingers or develope some long lasting issue where you wont be able to play games at all.

>>12406457
I think the devs didn't know how to program autofire while the button is pressed. Touhou wins again.
>>
>>12406467
Rapid tapping was unfeasible for arcades after players started literally bleeding on the cabinets from rubbing their fingers and knuckles across the buttons. That's a health code violation.

> The term Shmup was also used in the review of Drop Zone (UK Gold/Arena Graphics, 1985)[1] written by Julian Rignall in the same issue of ZZap!64.[2] Despite ZZap!64 claiming credit for the invention of the term, it is believed contractions of ‘shoot-em-up’ first appeared in Western arcades around 1978, the same time that Space Invaders (Taito, 1978) was dominating the arcade market.

Modern games only stopped demanding mashing due to the 2001 incident with Ralph Kennedy. For those unaware, the man jury-rigged an autofire device to pneumatically mash his finger, which looked like a stupid-ass steampunk gadget but worked really well, until he misinputed and tore the respective finger off in a heated run of Blazing Star

If I decide to complete a game, which is rare these days because I have much better things to spend my time doing, i dont really care if I "beat" the game. None of it matters, its all a time wasting exercise to pass the time and alleviate your boredom.
