and then they also have alphabetical folders

>>
>>12414406
I dont know if myrient has it, but for PS1 and Dreamcast at least, you can get compressed .CHD versions of the catalog that loses nothing and compresses everything big time.

PS1 set is like 400gb
Dreamcast like 400gb

It's exactly 2.987TB which spans 10,886 files. And that includes PAL, NTSC-U, and NTSC-J, which obviously, you don't need a copy for each region nor do you need 3 copies of "Happy Wappy Game #001".
>>
And fags have the gall to get snarky when I hoard roms.
>um, have you beaten ALL of those 30,000 games? thought not

It must not work very well, I just downloaded like 150gb worth of shit just clicking on links, no special program.
>>
>>12414542
I downloaded a 100GBs of PS1 games now and the only limit I noticed was six downloads at a time. Why the fuck would anyone need to do bandwidth bypasses? Now I need to do Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube and PS2 but only have a 6TB HDD to house this stuff so I need to be selective on PS2 and Gamecube games. Granted the 6TB is a backup storage I bought specifically for backing up all these games, but still.

You can save space by converting multiple versions of the same game as delta CHD file which only stores the data that differs from the parent CHD. Its been a feature in MAME for a while and can significantly reduce space depending on the game. Some emulators like PCSX2 and Duckstation can play delta CHD files but for others you have to revert them.

To make a delta CHD
chdman copy -i "clone.chd" -op "parent.chd" -o "delta.chd"

To revert a CHD
chdman copy -i "delta.chd" -ip "parent.chd" -o "clone.chd"

Yes, that is correct. I know this is /vr/ so newer platforms are out of the scope of discussion, but they are where the issue lies. Everyone ITT saying "everything pre-6th gen is only a few terabytes" is missing the problem here.
I only have about a terabyte of free drive space at the moment so I can't do too much to help, but I've been downloading digital only Japanese 3DS games so that I can seed them after the shutdown.

Also, as >>12416030 alluded to, prototypes are important to save. The 360 and PS3 each had a program where anyone with a developer kit could get builds of pretty much any near-launch game. These platforms have an enormous amount of prototypes as a result, and as far as I can tell, many of them are currently exclusively hosted on Myrient.

>>12416214
I haven't gone through all of Myrient so I can't say for certain this is true for every single ROM, but for the most part, old consoles are well trodden territory that you can easily find on other sites. What's at risk of disappearing are PC games (specifically unaltered ISOs), 7th and 8th gen console / handheld games (especially updates, DLC, digital only games, and game not released in the US), 7th and 8th gen prototypes and demos, and revisions of modern arcade games. The problem is that the files for all of this class of material are massive (several gigs per file, for tens of thousands of files), so unlike, say, the Saturn library, you can't easily back it all up in once place.

Samsung ones are high quality, but the problems with SD cards are innate to the medium. They weren't designed for long term storage. Well that’s annoying. Here’s hoping at least the one I’m using for my 3ds hack just werks. If it does ever give out I’ll be sure to bitch and moan about it on here. I have an old work laptop that I use simply to store roms and old pc games. It can’t even run most games but it was free and the hardrive has worked for over a decade now so I have stuff back up on there just in case (like alll the old stuff nes snes gameboy genesis game gear, older arcade titles that don’t take up a ton of space and a lot of classic PC games like UT99 etc). Good heads up tho on the sd card info I appreciate it.

Considering Spike received a bunch of DMCA takedown requests (they were probably from butthurt t.annies though,Spike has made a lot of enemies in the romhacking community over the years that want him gone and/or dead) in December of last year that it scared him enough to block the ability to download anything on the main site that's been uploaded after 2025 (everything before that is still up, for now...), then yeah, I'd say the future is uncertain.

There's a page on the site for submitting files, so I'd assume some dumpers sent their files directly to Myrient. It's weird though. The No-Intro and Redump websites record when a checksum was added to the database. Even for obscure 7th gen games, almost every checksum I've checked predates the existence of Myrient, yet as far as I am able to search, Myrient is the first appearance of most of these ROMs on the internet. I guess the source of ROMs being opaque is by design, with distribution being illegal and all.

No it's objectively worse because you can't own the old console games plus Nintendo is way worse now than they were then about what you were allowed to do with your console. The one and only thing it has going for it are the Arcade Archives and the fact just a tiny select few retro console games are available for purchase.

Also the fact they won't let you download compilation games like the Genesis Classics collection. That's a physical only. Fuck that company forever for this shit. That plus it's 450$ for a giant ransomware brick bomb that can go off if you slightly break the rules. Enjoy your infinite subscriptions. Better have an internet connection and be paid in order to rent forever.
>>

They did that because of their expanded NSO with the same Genesis games except they also are offering MERCS (ooooh!). Glad I downloaded it while I could.
>Enjoy your infinite subscriptions. Better have an internet connection and be paid in order to rent forever.

Well, in defense of Nintendo (I can hear the wails now) their subscription service is a good way to give someone a taste of over a hundred games that otherwise they wouldn't have bought outright for $5.00, but I do agree that both forms of availability should be offered.

That's fine and I could get behind that as long as they hold individual purchase and ownership as a sacred an unalienable right of every Nintendo owner.

In fact offering both is a great idea because it satisfies people who want to own and people who want to rent and try everything. Nintendo is just greedy.

There's a fine balance with these sites, maintaining obscurity and a functional userbase. I don't know the full picture but reddit adverts seems like far too much exposure
>>
>>12417132
I'm a 30-year-old white guy from a pretty standard suburban background. When I used Myrient, I always downloaded files one at a time manually: no scripts, no automation tricks. I even tossed them a donation afterward, even though I'd already grabbed everything I wanted, just because I appreciated the effort they put in to preserve all those sets and make them freely available. It felt like the decent thing to do for a project that gave so much to the community.
Then, maybe a month or two back, some Indian, threw together an AI-generated bulk downloader script and shared it publicly in plebbit. Not long after, the Myrient team dropped the announcement that the site's shutting down at the end of March 2026. From what I've pieced together, a couple of indian niggers ended up making competing scripts, got into arguments because others kept demanding features and fixes, but the code was basically just prompt-engineered garbage, not real programming skill. It turned into a mess of entitlement and low-effort tools hogging bandwidth.
I get why people like Stenzek (DuckStation/PCSX2 dev) sound so burnt out these days, and why a lot of emulator devs quietly back away from supporting Android ports. The flood of low-iq brownoid morons and endless demands without much give-back really kills the goodwill.
Look, I'm not out here trying to start a flame war or claim some grand superiority thing. I'm Catholic, raised to believe in the dignity of every person, but after years in tech communities and seeing patterns play out again and again, it's hard not to notice how certain cultural habits--mass scraping without regard for sustainability, expecting everything for free while no contributing--end up ruining good shared resources. Some groups just approach things differently, and when that clashes with preservation efforts built on mutual respect, it burns people out. That's the frustrating reality.

disc rot doesn't exist i didn't know how many faggots could actually fall for this corperate psyop.
>>
>>12417494
lol, tell that to all the discs I've had to throw away because they became unreadable over the past twenty years. Top quality lasts a lot longer than the shitty cheap discs I used to burn my warez on, but even the highest quality CD and DVD media still uses organic compounds that are subject to decay over time.
>>
>>12417494
My Wahoo sunshine is rotten, but I'm not even mad about it.
There are archival-grade discs from CDs all the way up to BDs. The regular OGs or "normal" ones have a certain percentage of organic materials in 'em, which is why they degrade over time. But the archival-grade ones (like M-DISCs) ditch that shit entirely: no organic dyes, just rock-like inorganic layers. They're rated for up to 1000 years if stored right and can handle some seriously absurd environments.
My autistic little goal is to burn stuff onto these archival-grade discs and donate five copies of each to my local library. That way my (white) community can access it without everything getting fucked by the brown flood that's ruining the internet. The future's going back to local shit: communities and physical stuff. Sites like 4chan or r*ddit are gonna get completely taken over by brownoids. The silver lining? It's super easy to spot a real white guy in a dirty brown sea.
So far I've donated five external BD drives and 20 M-DISC BDs loaded with discographies, books, magazines, and videogames. Myrient hitting EOL is a huge kick in the nuts for my project, but I ain't quitting. I do gotta give those guys respect though... $6000 a month to keep that beast running? That's insane. They earned it.
To be real, my solo method ain't the most efficient way to do this, and I'm doing it all by myself. But fuck it, it's what I've got.
The Eye, AlvRo, Myrient... total respect and mad gratitude to all of 'em.
>>
>>12416630
I'm not worried about anything being lost forever, but Myrient was great because it had a sane layout, no obnoxious ads, no download restrictions and full support for download managers. It was even better when it also had FTP support, but the loss of that was acceptable. I doubt that any new site will be as convenient, because there aren't many, if any, people out there who are going to sink $6k a month to provide the same degree of service.

you are too young and too slow in the head to understand real media decay. CD bronzing, laserdisc delamination, DVD layer rot were documented decades before you were born. OSes and drives might patch tiny errors once contents are loaded from disk into memory, but they can't save a disc that is actually dying. happened often enough that operating systems had to deal with them in one way or another.

Super obscure shit needs to be hosted separately from nintendo and sony roms.
>>
>>12417716
Look here, Pajeet, is so obvious he’s one of them’ that's why he’s pissed at your whole race. keep wastin bandwidth.
Place taken by the flood.
>>
>>12417697
Blame the retarded owner for not providing a torrent.Plus the owner is pajeet or huehue.
>>
>>12416030
Most of it can be found here, although there are some exceptions:
https://hiddenpalace.org/
Anything released in the last 10 years, still purchasable and first party Nintendo games don't provide links to the roms.
>>
>>12417819
And I forgot to say, most Myrient romsets have these included already including more recent discoveries. Alongside the rom itself Hidden Palace also shows the contributors, differences between the prototype & the final release and the development history.
>>
for me it's archive.org
>>
Is there a reason why CHD is not a standard for distribution? Iso/bin sets should be eliminated completely.
>>
>>12417835
Wait, I was under impression chd offered better compression. 7z it is then.
>>
It took me an hour to download 500mb single iso.
This fucking retarded owner and his disdain toward torrents.

Thanks to that above anon who just said to use a download manager for internet archive. Sometimes the best solution is the easiest one!

>>
>>12417748
Yeah I don't get why not do a torrent (or multiple) of the whole thing. People say torrents aren't practical for sites like Myrient because files get added and revised constantly, which would cause issues with people downloading and seeding, but since the site's shutting down it's like the ideal time to do it.
>>
>>12414091
>forced seeding or else banned
>on a fucking website that shares roms
Yeah, no
>>
Getting a fraction of the download speed compared to last week, not lookin good.
>>12417649
I hope the more obscure stuff like game updates, dlc, magazines, artwork, manuals etc don't all disappear. There's a lot of interesting things I never considered that are a part of this library.
>>
>>12417632
>Even worse is people going "i hope someone is backing shit up" instead of backing shit up themselves
1. It's about 300TB of data, if not more. Very very few here are going to have the bandwidth OR the storage space to do that.

2. There are currently at least two (Though they might merge) preservation efforts. One from a Discord group and one from /r/DataHoarder. There is a guy on Datahoarder who had already backed up 200TB of data from Myrient previously even before this news hit.

>Retard who is not putting an ounce of effort into preserving the site can only repeat things others have told him

>>
>>12417835
1. It does not compress as well as other compression formats, this is on purpose since it's meant to be usable as-is in emulators and some ODEs, meaning you can't compress it as well as a format designed to be extracted before use. This is on purpose since it's meant to be runnable as-is, not to focus on maximum compression.

2. It would not be feasible to make any sorts of hacks or translation patches designed to be applied directly to a CHD file because it has multiple revisions and can even compress the same file differently based on your settings. BIN files are a raw dump of a track so they will always be the same data if they were dumped properly.

3. It lacks features that some games require to function properly, any Saturn game that has indexes past 1 in it's CUE file would lose that information if converted to CHD and not function properly.

CHD is useful for it being the end format to run a game from, but not a good format for distribution.

>I mean it was also people bypassing the site and actually paying for the privilege
He really should have disabled direct links. The site itself was free to use with no registration, speed caps, ads or captchas required to be clicked through, daily limits, or any such bullshit, yet idiots created downloader clients (Likely with AI because they can't code worth a damn) and charged to use their features. Leeches that did jack shit were profiting off this site and bypassing the site itself and any of it's donation or other messages while sucking it's bandwidth. Worst part is these idiots will just go off now with their money that they gained by killing the site while one of the best game preservation sites on the plant to exist in years dies off.
>>
>>12418135
Can you be any more butthurt that people are actually doing something while you stand here brainlessly repeating things others told you to say?

Of course it was /v/. I saw a thread about Myrient there too and the first reply was someone proudly boasting that they didn't know what it was with everyone else circle-jerking about that too and going "fpbp", even the Myrient thread on /g/ had more intelligent replies.

The problem isn't "using a download manager" it's "selling a download manager to phone users, that bypasses the bandwidth throttling that the site owner uses to keep its costs down, and does not contribute any of the money it makes towards the bandwidth costs it incurs." Defend that if you can.

Defend illegally hosting and distributing 400TB of content that doesn't belong to you. It's always funny when thieving niggers complain about other people doing the same thing to them. You don't have any moral high ground to stand on if you choose to run a piracy site.

What "good thing" are you talking about? Who does it help to have these retards backing everything up to a hard drive and throwing it in a drawer, to be discovered along with their bloated corpse when they die? If you're not going to make the stuff you're "preserving" freely available, which the moralfaggots of plebbit will never do, then it's fucking useless. Myrient going down is NOT a preservation issue in the first place, and it's typical of the self-aggrandizing activist retards of that shithole to turn it in to one for updoots.

What makes you think they aren't going to be making it available? That is the plan, they aren't going to just back it up and then lock it in a safe. If you bothered to even look into the very thing you are throwing a tantrum about you would have known this.
>>

And now we come to the crux of the matter. Retard-kun here either could not get an invite for some private tracker of was banned from it due to being a leech and now is throwing a baby tantrum over anyone who can actually contribute.

Also retard-kun, they are fully planning to share these archives publicly, this was already stated. I know reading comprehension is not your strong suit.

I knew I should have downloaded those leaks earlier. I got most of it when it first happened but every mirror I knew at the time was eventually taken down before I could finish. I only found out a few weeks ago that Myrient had been re-hosting them since last July. No other piracy site seems to want to touch those files anymore. There is no way I am going to make it if the site remains this hammered until shutdown.

>Well that’s annoying. Here’s hoping at least the one I’m using for my 3ds hack just werks.

This is true for ANY type of solid-state storage by the way, not just SD cards. SD cards are nowhere near as high quality as a decent SSD, but all NAND storage has the issue where it will start to slowly corrupt and lose data if it's not periodically powered on. They are not good for long term cold storage at all. HDDs work a lot better. The spindle grade can dry up if not used for a very very long time, but most will be fine. Beyond that there are tape drives which are exclusively designed for long term backups and nothing else, but those are beyond the reach of most people.

>That plus it's 450$ for a giant ransomware brick bomb that can go off if you slightly break the rules.
Not this bullshit again....

No, they will not brick your fucking console if you hack it. Those stupid terms have been in the TOS for years, well in the 3DS era and likely earlier. It's basically going "Hey, if you fuck with your console and end up bricking it or getting banned, not our fault" it is NOT saying "Fuck with it and we WILL brick your system!"

They legally cannot do that. Microsoft tried something similar with the 360 years ago. They detected if people had hacked their system and disabled several features on it. Not even completely bricked it or prevented it from playing games, and yet, the backlash from that was so severe that the THREAT of the class-action lawsuit that was being penned from that caused them to release a second update to un-do the changes. Yes, just the threat of a lawsuit that didn't even fully brick but semi-removed features from pirated systems was so worrying even to a trillion dollar company like Microsoft that they released an update specifically for the pirates to restore those features. And you think Nintendo the second it detects a hack is going to just up and fully brick your system? These terms were on the 3DS and Switch as well, how many those were intentionally bricked?
