How does shit like Genesis transparency and dithered effects look with RGB-to-Component on a consumer CRT? Or the pre-rendered backgrounds in PS1 games?

>>12418096Where is a good place to find sets in decent condition? I've been burned twice on Facebook marketplace by taking TVs home and servicing them to find that the tubes are close to dead. One seller was selling a good sony Wega model for 50 bucks. She said the "picture is bit dim" so I asked her a bunch more questions then drove an hour and a half to pick it up. I plug it in there and the video doesn't even fucking turn on. Dumb bitchI'm willing to pay retard prices now if I can garuntee the set wasn't used for 40000 hours and doesn't have irepperable problems

probably a bad idea but ive been playing Xenosaga on the ps2 emulator so I'm busting out my old CRT monitor, real curious how it'll handle it
>>12423826well it kinda works, im trying a ton of different settings. the 2d assets look much better and the character models dont pop out of the environments the way it does on the flatscreen which are both nice improvementsit might be a limitation of my DAC but I cant set a really low custom res to try and run it with integer scaling at the native res so it ends up looking blurry the same way it does on a flatscreen, honestly it feels like theres probably a solution that I'm not savvy enough to figure out but I'll keep messing with it

Anyone here watch old TV on your CRT? What's your method for getting 240p? I tried running a media server off my PC and streaming the video to both my PS3 and 360 hooked up to my monitor but both ran like shit and had issues recognizing subtitle files.
>>12426609I realize I said 240p but those consoles only go as low as 480i which is fine. Most analog content is made for 480p and my BVM only does 15khz
>tfw haven't turned on my crt in over a month because I got an ayn thor and prefer the convenience of being able to suspend and play quickly
>>12426609>>12426617I do. Either older GPU or onboard with VGA out to RGB SCART or slightly less older GPU and HDMI or DP to VGA to RGB SCART. GPUs made in like the past 10 years usually don't support interlaced modes (at least AMD and Nvidia, on Windows, dunno about Intel or Linux).
>>12426825just like that? don't you need special gpu and crt emudriver?
>>12426853240p/480i are doable as super resolutions on lots of cards without any special drivers.I haven't used CRT Emudriver in like 15 years, so I can't help much about that.
>>12426617Most analog content is 480i though
>>12426609>>12426617FIY for just watching media, those cheap HDMI to composite Chinese adapters are *mostly* fine, unless you want to be super autistic.

>>12426861>>12427312NTA but I'm in the same boat, I'm looking to run HDMI to composite (micro HDMI actually, RasPi).I don't want to buy the first garbage that comes up in the search results, but when I tried to do research it was all just redditors screeching that TVs weren't meant for computers (no shit). Is there a middle ground that actually looks good without getting stunlocked on which use cases are heretek?
Is it worth recapping a CRT? I got a 20 inch Trinitron for 10USD including the original remote, and worked for a single day before going greenish with the classic horizontal lines of death. Many caps look in bad shape, but it most likely would have to replace all of them.Should i spend 30USD in new caps, plus a few days replacing them? or just cut my losses, resell the remote and just wait for a better shape one?
>>12427998Yeah fix it up. It's satisfying.
>>12426609yeah, almost every night. i use a modded ps3 because its simple and movian will play mkvs. 1080p stuff will play if the bitrate is low enough, but i either download or re-encode most stuff into a 480p mp4 or mkv file. i play everything location off an ssd but i've never had any issues with subtitles in movian. movian will also mount ntfs and exfat which is nice. one of the raspberry pis with composite out might work better for you.
>>12426629Why couldn't you do that on your CRT?
>>12427312As said, it's mostly fine if you output 480p and the flicker would be identical to other NTSC/PAL 480i modes. >>12427520If you use a Pi, you can use a RGB hat or the built in composite out.
>>12428047What do you use to re-encode?

>>12428394Mind sharing your settings? Tried it with some defaults and it wiped my subs
>>12428840I'm not that PS3 anon, but you gotta tweak the parameters for your use case and source material. Do the track mappings correctly and your subs should remain intact in the resulting file.I use ffmpeg for reencoding for playback on my PS2 (mostly old anime). My settings are xvid at 3000k bitrate (it's enough to avoid ugly artifacts, but you can experiment here), 640x480 for 4:3 sources, two pass encoding. Audio is 2ch mp3. I usually omit subs, but they can be mapped easily with -map 0:s or something similar depending on your input (check docs for syntax).Generally the ffmpeg docs are your friend, everything is explained there clearly. Once you get the hang of it, ffmpeg is very easy to control and integrate in scripts for batch convert.

>>12430213I wonder how vector displays actually worked. I mean, yeah, obviously they were just CRTs, but the signals would've had to been entirely different to encode a starting point, direction, and length for each line.

This is the kind of shit why people let CRTs die.34USD for decent quality capacitors (no, these arent the black chink ones), when where i live most post 2000's CRTs are 10USD or less.

>19" CRT just arrived>hear rattling inside>oh boy better check before trying it>open it up>motherboard completely cracked in halfShame because it was in otherwise pristine condition. Looks almost untouched. And I know this is always the risk with buying monitors off ebay, but there literally hasn't been any options in my local area in like 15 years. After the refund gets confirmed, and presumably the seller isn't going to want to pay for return shipping of a giant heavy box of scrap, I'm going to take a stab at board repair. I know my way around a soldering iron, but this will be a huge undertaking. Luckily it's only a single-sided board, but that's still a lot of traces to fix

And yeah, I bought both Last Blades over decade ago at a very reasonable price; I would hardly buy them at today's prices. Last Blade 2 is probably my favorite fighting game after KoF '96.It will be interesting to see what happens to the prices of AES games, as they have always been a very marginal phenomenon. I have noticed that the prices of NES games have fallen at least slightly in Europe, which I suspect is due not only to problems with the PAL standard, but also to the fact that many of those who are nostalgic for the NES have grown tired of the hobby and younger people are not as interested in it or they don't have too much extra money in this economy to waste it on such frivolities

Pulstar was $2k in 2019 and people want $8k for it now; copies aren't selling at that price but I suspect people are holding some games as investment items and it'll take a few more years before we know what prices will settle at. Luckily a lot of the best titles are still pretty affordable. I'm actually thinking of getting rid of SS3 and RB as they don't get as much use as SS4 and RBSYou're not in the UK are you?

>>12432042I've bought PVMs off like 12 years ago when they were cheap and never had any issues. In this case it was purely the fault of the seller. Didn't use proper packaging, just some layers of bubble wrap. And even then it actually would've been fine had he not KEPT THE MONITOR STAND ATTACHED during shipping. Having that attached is what lead to the whole thing getting pushed up into the base and cracking the motherboard all over.Like I said, I've been keep an eye out locally for a long long time for a PC monitor and it's been no dice since forever. Shipping really is the only option. And in this case, I got a full refund from the guy after showing him the damage. The tube and other components look otherwise immaculate so it's worth trying to salvage.

>>12427998I just recently fully recapped my 32" trinitron. I wanted to get around to doing an RGB mod for the thing for a while but just kept putting it off. When I decided to commit, my thought process was "well I have to go inside to do the mod, might as well go all the way and redo all the caps while I'm in there."It's a lot of work. The actual recapping isn't that hard (although removing the old caps is a pain) but the actual work is analyzing all the boards, cataloguing all the capacitors, coming up with a parts list of replacement caps on digikey, making sure to get high quality low ESR ones for particular components, etc. Is it absolutely necessary? If you're not seeing any overt issues with the CRT then probably not. But I'm glad to have peace of mind that it's now in the best shape it's going to be, and that I won't need to worry about anything else with the TV again.

PS3 Media Server is absolutely essential for any CRT owner. Especially if you have a massive hard drive that can hold the entirety of Dragon Ball Z Color Corrected (it's an over 1TB torrent).
>>12435805economies of scale and all that. And early LCDs would've been relatively more expensive because of initial costs of opening new production lines, recouping R&D costs, the simple fact that you can get away with marking up the price of New Thing(TM), etc
