I have been playing this in awe for the last two days. It feels like a hidden masterpiece that few people are aware of. Is the second one on this level too?
>>12427973Ah yes, Diablo. My favorite hidden gem. Can I recommend you listen to this really obscure, underrated band, they're called the Beatles.
Is this hidden gems general? This Super Mario Bros game is pretty decent. I wonder if the sequels are any good. Do bad things get sequels for 40+ years? I like how you make the mascot jump over platforms to complete challenges. Very interesting idea for a game!
>>12428109This hidden gem is ASS
There's this rarely credited FPS gem called Doom. You should definitely check it out. The graphics are rough but the gameplay still holds up!
>>12427979>>12428109>>12428153Stop being flippant, disingeneous and anti-semantic.You know for a fact everyone here only talks about D2 which is overrated as fuck
>>12427979
>>12428312No, I'm not being disingenuous. I really think you listen to this band, they're really good. Here just listen to a few of their songs - they've got a lot of range:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiTwf45cH6Mhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nZ3QIKOMlkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4xw_Dx0pIghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44GB53rnI3cCrazy right? I can't believe nobody knows about these guys. So underrated.
>>12427973i know what you mean op, obviously it's a well known game but it's kind of overshadowed by the genre it spawned. i love how to the point it is, how difficult it is from the word go (especially as a warrior) and how much the tone matches the gameplay which is something they started losing even as early as classic d2
>>12428379The rolling stones are better, but I guess they're too underground for the masses.
>>124284502 obscure 4 me
>>12427973>I have been playing this in awe for the last two days. Glad you like it! It's one of my favorites too.>It feels like a hidden masterpiece that few people are aware of. Maybe relative to today, but Diablo was a really big hit in its day, very popular and people were really looking forward to the sequel. From late 1996 into mid 2001, Diablo had sold 2.5 Million copies world wide, which were big boy numbers in those days.>Is the second one on this level too?Yes and no, it does some of the same things but also some different things. I like that game as well, but I still like the first game the most for its aesthetics, atmosphere, music, and pace. It's definitely worth trying Diablo 2 if you liked the first game, but it WILL be different.>>12428312If I were to give OP the benefit of the doubt, he was born later and just blindly picked this game out of a torrent pack or something and loved it, which isn't entirely unthinkable, but it feels unlikely given that nuDiablo still has a pretty high profile.I would actually agree that Diablo 2 is a bit overrated, it gets a bit too proto-MMO-ish for my tastes and it just lacks the same lonely, tense, and isolated mood, but the core game is still quite fun and it's by no means a bad game. If you ignore Battle.net and just do a LAN run with your bros, Diablo 2 IS a fun adventure.

>>12429093I never played either, but I'm interested for the atmosphere and roleplaying reasons.Does Diablo 2 improve the gameplay significantly, or why is it considered better?
>>12429118D2 is better in every way. Zero reason to spend time with D1. No reason to even elaborate because after an hour with either game you will understand why D1 entirely was forgotten after D2 launched.
>>12427973>It feels like a hidden masterpiece that few people are aware of.Now why do you say the most retarded things ever OP
>>12429310Nah. I still played 1 after 2 and enjoyed it more overall. 2 had some improvements especially with new skills but I still got bored at some point during act 2.
Icewind Dale is better and the Beatles suck.
>>12429310Boo!D1 has much better horror atmosphere than 2. I also really dislike how D2 turned into "build" autism, as if that is the mark of a good RPG. D1 has a scrappy feeling of needing to make use of every item at your disposal. Oh you think you're going to just shoot fireball at everything? Welcome to Caves 1. Half our enemies are immune to fire damage.
>>12429758Build autism happened because if the synergy patch buffing monster HP, skill synergies, and additional new items. You could make an Amazon with freezing Arrow, guided Arrow, and multi shot if you wanted to rather than stick with strick synergy paths or nerfing your damage by splitting down paths.
>>12429927Synergies were a poor way to try and make the useless skills more useful. They should've just overhauled the less useful skills in some way instead.
>Blizzard North originally wanted to sell proto-DLC in the form of $3 foil-wrapped floppy disks that would have randomly distributed new items, enemies, and missionsngl part of me wishes they did it just because of how kino the og sprites were
>>12428127one of the first songs i remember liking was the california raisins version of i heard it through the grapevine
at this point I dont even know anymore if these "d1 is better than d2" posts are legit or not. I always assume they are because vr attracts weird ass edgy contrarians.
>>12428127>>12430137I was just thinking about these little guys the other day lol.
>>12430376you can't be so fragile about a difference of opinion
>>12429118If by roleplaying, you mean stuff like a more open world with choices in quests and stuff, and faction allegiances, there is zero of that in either game, these are hack and slash dungeon crawlers descended from the likes of Rogue and Angband. Strife has more roleplaying, and that's built on Doom's engine. If you mean stat building and inventory managment, then they do that part.>>12429310Narrow mind.>>12430376That's not a contrarian opinion, a contrarian opinion would be to say "they were never good games."Yeah, Diablo 2 would overshadow Diablo 1, but Diablo 2 not being a categorical upgrade was never a universal opinion.I was like 8 or 9 when Diablo 2 came out, and I thought it was one of coolest fucking games I had seen in my life, BUT, I also thought there were things about it which weren't as strong as the first, like the music and visual design. For as much as I've had my fun with Diablo 2 over the years, I always wished that some parts or aspect of it was more like the first game.
This thread tempted me too much and now I'm playing The Hell IV
Been playing this with Devilution X and trying different characters. Ended up going with Rogue and made it down to Diablo. I mowed through everything else in the game but hes kicking my ass. Only thing I can seem to do is just chug mana potions with mana shield on while I wail on him with my bow close up. I just need to get the rhythm down right where I never let my mana shield go down otherwise he fucks me up.
>>12427973I feel you OP. Played it way back in the day on a windows 98. Not sure how people played it during XP-Windows 7 period (it was bad to play Diablo 2 on W7, assuming the same for D1) but Gog release made me reconnect to this game. And yeah, Diablo 2 is very good and addictive to this day.
>>12429310>D2 is better>gameplay is basically chugging stamina potion and skipping through everything>5 builds are playable on hell>energy is useless
>get unique bow drop>instead of arrows it shoots lightning bolts holy shit>all strong enemies are immune to lightning>works only on weak enemies, who would die quickly to any other weapon anywayNow this is some real dev shitposting.
My only bone to pick with D1-2 is lack of or limited respec
>>12432279Fire Wall works pretty well on Diablo if you can get him to stand still for it.In fact, Fire Wall and Lightning Wall are extremely good spells for Rogue to learn, because it helps her block many enemies from coming through somewhere, giving her time to shoot at them.>>12432319The new bows in Hellfire seem really cool and fun at first, but then you use them and realize that actually they're not really very great.I think I gave my Barbarian the Multi-Shot bow as a ranged fallback, but it wasn't great for that either because it's just really weak, and with his shitty To-Hit he needs a bow which would boost that anyway.A lot of Hellfire makes more sense when you realize that a lot of the better stuff was Blizzard's unused leftovers.
>>12432334I get you for Diablo 2, but there's basically nothing to re-spec in Diablo 1 anyway, the only real progression you have is levels and attributes, and the base values will not differ for character of the same class with maxed level and attributes.
>>12429310>Zero reason to spend time with D1>No reason to even elaborate>D1 entirely was forgottendamn
>>12432593I want a transgender/transracial shrine to change my class
>>12433442Make a new fucking character.
>>12432307>>5 builds are playable on hellbeat harder modes on D1 and tell me that again.there's basically 1 effective build in D1. magic rules.
>>12433582You're not trying hard enough if you can only do Diablo on Hell as Sorcerer.
>games that only you played
If I beat normal, thne jump into Hell mode, will I get fucked up? Or can I get tons of powerful gear and level up really fast?
>>12435742Yes, Hell is fucking brutal if you haven't levelled up and learned how to deal with the tougher monsters on Nightmare. On Nightmare, monsters take more punishment and do more damage, and more monster types are going to have further elemental resistances and even immunities. On Hell, the monsters are even meaner, and some are double immune, or worse, triple immune.Sets of monsters with mixed immunities is where Sorcerer is actually going to start suffering, as you need to be swapping spell types frequently (fast enough with quick keys, though). Some uniques, and some rarer monster types, however, are going to be goddamn TRIPLE immune on Hell, which means the ONLY spells that'll work on them at all are Stone Curse, Golem, and Apocalypse.Stone Curse will work, but it uses a lot of mana and wears off, also even a high level Sorcerer is going to be COMPLETELY pitiful in melee, so say, Warlord Of Hell, on Hell, will take a minute or two of you chipping him down and repeatedly stoning him. Golem's punches can't be resisted, but he's weak, slow, dumb, and fragile, and monsters will see him from afar (bug). At best, he can help you chip down stoned immunes, but it only helps a little.Apocalypse hits ok, but not like other good spells you might be used to, and uses shitloads of mana (Hellfire), or has very few charges on rare and expensive staves. Hellfire also nerfs it so it doesn't strike through walls anymore. You CAN do Hell difficulty on singleplayer, I've done it, but everything about how it plays is really to make you go:>Man, I wish I was playing another class in this moment! And then it hits you, that you REALLY want to play Hell in multiplayer, because it makes more of a difference than ever to have a buddy of another class to help offset your own's weaknesses.Hellfire takes that further, the Arch-Liches in the Crypt on Hell are plain unfun.
