Was Doom on the 32x a good port? I mean, having a game like that on a mega-drive add-on is quite impressive.

It was the most cost effective way for people to play a decent version of Doom in late 1994 and early 1995. The Jaguar version was better but it cost more than the 32x. The Playstation port that came out just one year later made both the 32x and Jaguar versions look like dogshit however.

Yes, the 32X version is pretty much the best port of Doom from that era. The 3DO version is almost as good. It's hard to go wrong with either of them but I think the 32X version just barely wins due to the excellent conversion of the soundtrack. You can't beat these Genesis beats.

(in case you weren't joking: the 32x port is trash but at least it's running on the real Doom engine and wasn't reprogrammed from scratch unlike the SNES port and things generally work like they should so that's someting. 3do is about as shitty as the 32x port in slightly differing ways but has a good cd soundtrack, jaguar is significantly better than 32x or 3do but has no music, psx is even better but has ambient music and different sound effects)

Better than snes port

It only had 15 levels and had the worst sound ever. SNES was more complete, but way less playable. Jaguar port was pretty decent, but itself was still fairly cut down from the original, and of course also no one owned a Jaguar.
First decent console port was PSX, and then later GBA. (which itself was effectively just the Jaguar port)

Brap soundtrack

It was kinda ok for the times.
The updated versions(Resurrection / Fusion) are of course sweet.

The 32x was $150 at launch

How much did Jaguar cost at the same time? Internet says Jaguar US launch price was $249.99. 32X needs the separate base console but maybe you already had it.
That said even if Jaguar was still more expensive at the time at least it had 3 good games to play: Doom, Wolf3D and Tempest 2000. 32X only has the Doom port and even that is shittier than on Jaguar.

Good performance and all, even decent controls, but bad music and lots of cut levels.

the PS1 port is the only port worth playing if for some reason a modern sourceport isnt acceptable
