>turns 30 this year
It's amazing how much of gaming was a boom and a bubble that burst. Hence, why this is the only worthwhile gaming board to visit.
1996 was the peak of innovation even if that era was able to stretch all the way to 2005.
2006 with the Wii was truly the end. N64 kino is truly the top.

Nothing will make going to the cartridge era worth it. Every time you turn your game on, you're terrified that it might have erased itself. At least once every few months, it does. Fuck that
>>
>>12436794
what? that literally never happened with cartridges.

if you turn the game off before beating it you didn't beat the game

Yeah I think 1985 - 2005 will be hard to beat if you're looking at innovation and quality of major releases. It's nice how we got to live through that evolution of games. But you can only go from 2D to 3D once, there's no way innovation would keep that pace forever since you get diminishing returns on improving the technology.

There's still good games coming out all the time, more than I can finish in a lifetime. I care less about keeping up with AAA games and the industry itself these days, but I'm happy with the games available.

You're right about that era being peak, however. I loved my PS1 so much.

I enjoyed all 3 consoles and felt pity for the seething brokefags having to make do with only one.
>>
Why do people shit on N64? I understand PS1 was awesome and had mature, story-driven games - but N64 is no slouch either. Is it just bitter manchildren who didn’t grow up with both?

Just off the top of my head:
>SM64
>OOT
>Star Fox 64
>MM
>Mario Party series
>Perfect Dark

These are objectively great games. There’s a lot of hit or miss stuff I left off, but the console really did try to cater to couch multiplayer fun, which was novel at the time. But on top of that, they have some single player games from that generation that are unrivaled and still considered then penciled of their respective genres.

But it didn’t have FF7, which is the best game of that generation.

The way I see it, N64 is great for multi player, the PS1 is great for single player. They both have some good multi player and single player experiences, but their strengths and weaknesses are different. I honestly don't get the point of console / tribe war shit in the age of emulation. Try, play, keep, and check all the games you want, without giving a shit about what the other people play. You should only weight in other people's opinions on what games to play, only and if, you are having any at your house to play games with.

Tits or GTFO

Sir, you are too sane to post here. This is the reasonably conclusion we should all come to but alas, the console warring will never be over so it seems.

I myself am a 64fag. I still love the hell out of psx though. I never touched a Saturn so I can’t speak to that but I’m sure I’d enjoy it too. Anyway rant over
>>

>N64 is great for multi player,
I prefer ps1 and saturn for multiplayer and my kids do too, lack of fun games like virtua cop and ddr on 64 makes it unappealing for multiplayer. They do like pokemon snap a little but I personally find that game insanely boring lol.

I said N64 is great for multi player chiefly for being one of the first consoles to have 4 controller ports right out of the box with no need for adaptors. If you were a poor fag with only one controller, you can ask your friends to bring their controller from home and it would still work, bullshit free. I liked Star Fox 64, Perfect Dark, F-Zero X, Mario Kart 64, WWF No Mercy, Diddy Kong Racer, Goldeneye, Quake 64, Mario Party, Smash Bros, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Mario Tennis, Duke Nukem 64, WCW / NWO Revenge, Donkey Kong 64, Starcraft 64, Pokemon Stadium, Worms Armageddon, Star Wars Racers, Puzzle League, etc. with others. That is my own subjective experience. Yours is also valid and in no way I feel it's wrong. That's the self defeating nature of the console / tribe wars online. We are subject to our limited experience. How old we were, how many people we knew, how much money and games we had, when and where we got to play them, etc.
>>
>>12436793
N64 is probably the only major retro console I never got because it always looked like shit. Some friends had it but there wasn't a single game that made it seem worth getting.
>>
>>12437002
The thing is, if you don't like first party Nintendo franchise games, there's almost nothing for you. If you don't care about Mario or Zelda there's very little. Star Fox is a decent enough rail shooter, but it's nothing special. Was perfect dark supposed to sell me on it?

I think that’s the main issue with revisiting the N64 library in modern times when you’re unlikely to be playing multiplayer. I also never really liked Rare’s brand of platformer. A lot of its library is dependent on those things.

New /vr/ FUD. What the fuck is this? You can't tell me this has happened to you unless you put your cartridges in a salt water bath or did some other retarded shit while lacking common sense.
>>

I don't think the history lesson is gonna win arguments when what to play comes up next

It depends on what your friends want at the time. They are always going to fight over what game to play, so you might as well have some variety. That might have been an issue if you only had one rental for the weekend or had one or two N64 games in your collection, but now? You can flash cart or drive your way out. Just about any N64 game you can give a shit over is there. I still like the PS1 better for its third party selection, but having grown with the console, I appreciate the weirder western games we got on it, and the cool Japanese exclusives we didn't. I feel that the early years were really rough, but the last years were when they finally started to embrace the quirks. I like late gen N64 as Bomberman 64 01, Sin & Punishment, Custom Robo V2, Shiren the Wanderer 2, The World is Not Enough, San Francisco Rush 2049, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask, Kirby 64, Robopon 64, Bangai-O, Hybrid Heaven, Ogre Battle 64, etc.

Try Smash Bros. if you haven't already. Smash Remix is also a great mod that adds a fuckload of content.
