>Pokemon sells tens of millions of units per game>Instead of making a 3D Pokemon RPG like people expected from the new generation, we get a literal janny simulator where Luigi just sucks shit up with a fucking vacuum cleaner>N64 pioneered first-person shooters on consoles with GoldenEye moving over 8 million copies, and the genre was bigger than ever thanks to Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and the hype for the upcoming Halo>Nintendo sells Rare to Microsoft after making them produce a crap Zelda clone that no one wanted>Every Mario game up till now has been an adventure across varied locations>All of Mario Sunshine's levels just take place in the same boring beach setting, which isn't particularly escapist for people living in humid climates like Dixie or Japan (aka Nintendo's primary markets)>Dark fantasy was blowing up, especially with stuff like Lord of the Rings>Instead of a gothic Zelda game to surpass Ocarina and Majora, we got Wind Waker with cartoon graphics and all you did was fucking sailGenuinely what were they thinking? I love the GameCube, but it's HARD carried by just how damn good 6th gen multiplats were, because GC sadly didn't have many decent exclusives.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB7yXT0dpQILiterally no one applauded the Luigi's Mansion reveal at E3 2001 lol; there was more excitement for Ice Climbers in Smash Bros.
At least it eventually got the best Zelda game.
>>12438234Yeah everyone shit the bed except Sakurai and Retro studios
The Gamecube for me was mainly a Tony Hawk and SA2B machine. I had a Dreamcast, but it wasn't getting the new Pro Skaters and my copy of SA2 broke, so Gamecube seemed like a sensible upgrade. I think the only exclusive I played was Resident Evil 4 but it eventually came to PS2 anyway
>>12438262Oh I forgot about Metroid, I played that too and it was awesome
>>12438241Indeed.
>>12438234>Dixie wtf
>>12438234>Wave Race Blue Storm>Mario Sunshine>Star Fox Adventure>Wind Waker I loved the GameCube’s beachy summer vacation feel and still do. I always associate it with nice looking tropical water and it’s a big reason why Wind Waker and Link’s Awakening are my all time favorite Zelda titles.
>>12438234The GC is a fascinating story of a company zigging when everyone else is zaggingThe trend is gaming consoles turning into living room gaming PCs/dvd players and people just pick the brand they like?Okay, we're going to use mini disc and make it so, at least out of the gate, anyone who isnt a first party dev is going to have an easier time landing men on the moon than developing for our consoleInternet? What's that?Rareware? Is that some dot com ebay competitor? Remember Pets.com?That all being said, the GC gamepad is a goated, legendary piece of video game hardwareThe console itself is really cool, the toy making DNA in Nintendo really showed with the design of the hardware but wowSo many pants on head business decisions
>>12438292Nintendo to this day is still oddly resistant to a standardized online infrastructure like everyone else has. Switch Online still doesn’t have a normal friend adding system, native voice chat or any kind of achievements/trophies equivalent.
>>12438278?
>>12438298What did OP mean when he said Dixie?
>>12438302RATTLESNAKES AND ALLIGATORS
>>12438302he is diddy kong, therefore he lives with dixie kong.
>>12438304>Dixie or Japan (aka Nintendo's primary markets)Extremely weird phrasing unless OP is ESL and something got lost in translation.
>>12438308Every American knows what Dixie is lol.
>>12438309Yes, but how is that one of Nintendo’s 'primary' markets? Why would you say it that way?
>>12438312>how are your primary markets the places where your primarily generate your revenueI'm begging you to go to school.
>>12438316>Dixie or Japan (aka Nintendo's primary markets)So in OP’s words, the southern United States region specifically and Japan are Nintendo’s primary markets? I’m smelling some bullshit here.
>>12438318Do you think Baptist mothers bought their kids PlayStations after televangelists warned that these games feature blood and crossdressing? No, they bought Satan-free Nintendo systems.
>>12438323Nah, I’m not buying it. Dixie was such an odd specific, especially when referring to Mario Sunshine, which in no way resembles the southeastern coastal regions. I was right to call OP on it.
>>12438327>which in no way resembles the southeastern coastal regionsFlorida is tropical, but nevertheless, the humidity was the main point.
>>12438350Pianta Village is more Mediterranean feeling, which isn’t very humid.
>>12438351I thought the Med was known for humidity
>>12438358Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought Mediterranean beaches were more comparable to SoCal than Florida.
>>12438234My complaint with Wind Waker was never the sailing or the graphics, I loved both. The problem is Nintendo was forced to rush Sunshine and Wind Waker because the Cube was floundering in sales. Sunshine’s lame blue coin collecting and Wind Waker’s Triforce shard hunt were pretty blatantly there because the devs had to rush them. I still really love those games, but they lack the usual Nintendo polish.
>>12438234I adore Wind Waker. It’s the most cinematic feeling Zelda game and seems perfectly suited for an animated film adaptation. https://youtu.be/i7A8TU0g-xU?si=qPQTse-8_u7m7a7L
>>12438234They did make a 3D Pokemon RPG (actually, two of them) for the GameCube. Not sure what the point of this post is
>>12438530please feel bad
>>12438530>They did make a 3D Pokemon RPG (actually, two of them) for the GameCubeLOLNO Pokemon stadium isn't a proper Pokemon game. People wanted something like Sword and Shield 20 years earlier
>>12438350>>12438351Isle Delfino seems to essentially be Venice crossed with French Polynesia.
You forgot the part where they signed one of the best selling franchises of the previous generation and then most people didn't care enough to buy the damn console. The fact is it's easy to look at things in hindsight, but it was a new generation and a new decade, there was no telling what things from the previous generation was going to be discarded and what new things were going to be trendy ahead of time. Nobody could have predicted that players would have survival horror fatigue so soon and that everyone would consider tank controls "dated" almost overnight, or that FPS would become bigger on console than on PC (Goldeneye was an exception, not the norm).
>>12438638Yeah, in hindsight, there was just no way the GameCube was going to succeed. Japan and Europe were firmly PlayStation territory by that time, leaving North America as the only major market that still showed some interest in Nintendo’s consoles.
>>12438638>Goldeneye was an exceptionMedal of Honor?
>>12438234Only the Japanese would come up with Mario having a water soda dispenser as a cool idea
>>12438234>a 3D Pokemon RPGA lot of people seemed to expect this for some reason but Pokemon only makes sense on a handheld.
>>12439123As a kid I always figured that by now we’d have a cel shaded Pokemon game that looks just like the anime and finally integrates all the characters from it. In my mind it would look like the recent couple of Dragon Quests games.
>>12438285This wasn't even specific to the GameCube, for some reason in the late 90s and early 2000s there was just this heavy focus on beach locations. Dreamcast with sonic adventure, soul calibur, crazy taxi. PS2 with FFX, kingdom hearts, jak and daxter. Xbox with Halo and far cry.
>>12438405Rushed? It had been 7 years since mario 64. Gamecube was the first ninty console to not release with a flagship mario game. The issue is the exact opposite, they should've pulled their heads out their asses and had mario out at launch instead of fucking luigi's mansion ot whatever the fuck
>>12439214That’s fair. I’m honestly not sure where all their in-house development team resources were going for the launch. Luigi’s Mansion was an odd choice.
>>12439123I remember a dream I once had.I was playing Pokemon blue on a ps1 and I traded with my cousin by inserting his memory card in slot 2. Not sure why I remember that dream after so many years.
>>12438278that must be where OP lives. I think that's where the Chicks come from? He is so right though Nintendo really should have considered american yokels when they made sunshine
>>12438567I'm talking about Colosseum and Gale of Darkness
>>12439994Those are Stadium 2.0
>>12439898it really happened, i'm your cousin, and i still have the memory card
>>12439123Why? Handhelds are just worse consoles. Don't pretend anybody actually plays those things in fucking public. At most some kids played them on a long car journey
>>12440284You were clearly too young or too old for the first wave of Pokemon mania in the west, which coincided with the launch of the Game Boy Color.
>>12439925>He is so right though Nintendo really should have considered american yokels when they made sunshineThis but unironically
>>12438302>>12438308you're an ESL
>>12441261No I’m not. It’s just an odd specific to use. Especially in this context:>All of Mario Sunshine's levels just take place in the same boring beach setting, which isn't particularly escapist for people living in humid climates like Dixie or Japan (aka Nintendo's primary markets)That’s a weird thing to say.
>>12441532I don't see how it's weird
>>124415701. I can’t say that Mario Sunshine feels particularly 'humid' to me. 2. Isle Delfino doesn’t even remotely resemble the Southern United States. Delfino Plaza consists of Mediterranean style architecture with Venice gondola boats. The Piantas and tropical island setting is more French Polynesian.
>>12441580People in humid places don't usually fantasize about summer getaways
>>12441583There are plenty of humid regions in the U.S. that don’t have easy access to beautiful tropical beaches and water, anon.
>>12441589I think they crave cool weather
>>12442456Yeah I’m sure some kid living in the Louisiana swamps back in 2002 had no desire to experience the tropical island vacation depicted in Sunshine because it was humid out lol
>>12442624Correct, if it's fucking hot your fantasy is a snow level
>>12438304You can tell a Yankee made this because it has Maryland as part of the south, they didn't want that shit and thought they could pawn it off on us.
>>12442664lol I grew up in Pennsylvania which also has humid as fuck summers and I can assure you I wouldn’t have turned down a tropical island vacation. OP’s logic makes no sense.
>>12438234>>Instead of making a 3D Pokemon RPGHuh? TWO DAYS since the thread was made, and nobody mentioned that they made TWO (2) 3D Pokemon RPGs on the GameCube?
>>12442686>>12439994
>>12442686Those aren't real Pokemon games. People wanted something like Sword and Shield except in 2001
>>12442689Good God, I'm blind. I'll slink away in shame now
>>12440269They're not at all. You haven't played them, have you anon? >>12442691Sword and Shield are awful. Colo/XD are actually good if you bothered to play them
>>12442703>Sword and Shield are awfulMaybe, but they also have the Pokemon formula in a fully 3D space with explorable towns and such. Spinoffs like Colosseum and Gale were not going to cut it.
>>12442713Similarly, it’s always been baffling to me as to why Nintendo has never tried to integrate the light JRPG elements from the handheld Mario Tennis/Golf games into the console versions.
>>12438323>the system with Pokémon>Satan-free
>>12438327>I was right to call OP on it.I don't know if it were some artifact of mtl or ShatGPT, or if OP just dropped a spicy to generate conversation in his thread (which it did), but yes, you are absolutely correct that it was an odd word choice, just like it was odd of him to declare that specifically the southern United States was one of Nintendo's two primary markets. The other anons, or more likely OP himself, are fucking with you.
>>12442739The objectively bizarre focus on humidity is what puzzles me the most.
>>12442750Are you from a cool climate?>>12442739Nintendos were bought by Christian moms, this is known.
>>12442703>XDGo back
>>12443494So again OP’s logic that people living in humid places wouldn’t find Mario’s tropical island vacation to be an escape doesn’t add up.
>>12443501They'd by and large prefer a winter wonderland. Well actually, in general people regardless of climate would prefer more than one biome in their Mario game.
>>12438638I don't think there was much of a fatigue, we even got resident evil movies.Either way i still think Silent Hill might have been better on Gamecube and RE with Sony still.Yeah Crapcom 5 was not a great move, you'd be better having a two min discs vice city than this shit.RE 4 was good tho and it was the only actual good possible thing out of this for everyone involved unironically. Hell MGS should have been there too, it's really shit how Crapcom got in there instead of Konami, it needed more Konami support.
>>12442668Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon, which is explicitly the border between MD and PA. it was colonised by Yankees and turned into a suburb of Filthadelphia in the 20th century, the same thing currently happening to the state of Virginia.
>>12438234Nintendo doesn't own pokemon and doesn't decide about it's releases.
>>12444639That makes zero sense.
>>12442703True but that's not the point, the point is that they're still just spinoffs and not mainline games.
>>12444815Common misconception. Game Freak develops the games, but Nintendo is the majority rights holder and absolutely has a say in when games get released. Why would you think otherwise?
>>12444639The majority of the region referred to as 'Dixie' has all four seasons. You’re basically just talking about Florida.
>>12444861Summers are still miserable in those places
>>12444872Summers are also miserable in Ohio. That’s why people head to the ocean, dummy.
>>12438234Eternal Darkness, F-Zero, and 1080 Avalanche got the most play for me. My gf played Animal Crossing and Super Monkey Ball 2. We both liked the Mario Kart. Metroid Prime was the best.
>>12438234I still enjoyed it
