Too many anachronisms turned it into reddit fanfction shit. Get rid of Dark Samus, get rid of Dr. Luigi, get rid of third party shit that would never happen on the n64 like Sonic and Crash, then maybe we can consider it.

Prince of Sablé, Banjo, Slippy Toad, Captain Syrup, Wart, Stanley the Bugman... there are almost endless options so I don't know why they went the uninspired route and added characters that either didn't exist until after Melee or would never be in a N64 game. If there's no consistency then they might as well just add Master Chief or Undertale guy or whatever because it doesn't matter to them.

For me personally, I think what would be cool to make everyone happy from here is if they took the post-N64 characters they added and change them to characters that debuted on the N64 and below, tweaking their movesets as needed. I understand they already had the voice actor read out the character names, and the artwork was already drawn and the work was already done for these characters. But that's what I would have done before they went all-in. Never too late though.

Dark Samus -> Unsuited/Justin Bailey Samus from Metroid 1, or the Chozo Statue if you want to get more creative.

Roy -> Sigurd from Genealogy. Could also take Seliph.

Dr. Luigi -> Nothing that makes sense comes to mind for a Luigi clone. I'd say scrap him entirely and just replace him with Nurse Peach from the first Dr. Mario as an easy Peach clone instead.

Lucas -> Ninten is the obvious choice, but if you wanted to do the least amount of work, just give Lucas his outfit(s) from EarthBound 64 and you could get away with it.

I think the third party characters are perfectly fine, they fit the criteria for a "smash 64 remix" and are from the same era or below. For contrast, it would be kinda lame if they started adding characters like Lucario or Joker from Persona 5, I'd rather just play Smash Rex at that point (which I recommend because it's also great but it goes for something different). They seemed to have gotten the memo and started adding only N64 and below characters from here on out.

I agree with >>12442934, all of these picks make sense. Hard to imagine Justin Bailey Samus as a Morph Ball, but it's a nice compromise between Zero Suit Samus and an echo. Chozo Statue is cool, I'd also take a Space Pirate. Sigurd from Genealogy is uber-based. Lucas with Earthbound 64 colors is smart. Nurse Peach is cute, I'd like that.

I don't mind third-parties but I'd still love to see some more first-party NES/SNES-era picks. If Smash 64 had gotten more characters, the roster would just be smaller names like Muddy Mole from Mole Mania and Lark from Pilotwings. But sadly nobody rosterfags for the Muddy Moles of Nintendo, everyone wants Cloud and Rayman (it's a hack, anything goes).

No, that's missing the point. Dr. Luigi, not unlike Young Link, is a glorified balance update to make Smash Remix have a viable Luigi.

I agree that some of the characters really don't feel like they fit, such as Geomon, Crash, or Marina, and the meme addition of Mad Piano was just stupid, but at least they stuck to videogame characters. I swear if they ever add Spongebob or Goku I'm out.

If anything them not adding side-B moves is what trips me up more.
