Is it RI-U or REE-U
I always pronounced it RI-U but they seem to call him REE-U in the games that have voice acting now so I guess that's the correct one. Guess I was also always pronouncing Mako incorrectly all these years too.
>>12441820neither, english does not have a sound to properly pronounce his name. Just call him rye-you because its funny.
>>12441820Boomer here. It's ROO
>>12441820Typically Ryu (the combination) is romanized as ri-yu so my pick is ri-U.

>>12441820>>12441825>>12441989This. RYE-YOU/RAI-YOU is how we said it in the 90s where I lived. We were wrong of course. It's more like ri-U or >>12441924 in reality. I say it properly when talking about Ryu from Ninja Gaiden or Breath of Fire, but Street Fighter Ryu I still end up calling him rye-you sometimes out of old habits.
>>12442000We also called Sagat "SAG-it" like Bob Saget though, and Zangief like Zan-JIFF, so we got a lot wrong.
It's literally the same "ryu" that's in the middle of "shoryuken". Also you can hear people say his name in a million games and in all the SF anime ever made.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HdXZ54ig-A
I called him Rye U until I heard Ree U in I think the anime movie or maybe an Alpha game. Now that I think about it I watched both the live action film and the saturday morning cartoon and I can't for the life of me remember how they pronounced it in those lol.

>>12441838Is he an Aussie?
I don't care what the "correct" pronounciation is, I'll just keep saying Rahw-you
>>12441820Both RI-U and REE-U look like they could be pronounced the same because you have failed to make the intended pronunciations specific enough. Just use IPA.
this website is dead, now full of triple dekinais that can't even grasp basic Japanese pronunciationmew -> ryu
>>12442000>is how we said it in the 90s where I lived.Who gives a fuck what you and the other trailer park vermin called it back then? What's the relevance of this outburst?
>>12442813It’s actually pronounced differently since it’s not in the middle of other sounds

>>12446818>What's the relevance? The relevance is both personal and as part of the explanation of the entire "Rye-You" pronunciation. OP asked how it's pronounced, and I was pointing out the correct pronunciation while also explaining that "rye-you" was commonly used in the 90s, and still slips into conversation sometimes because of old habits. See >>12442940, lots of people called him "rye-you" until exposed to more Japanese Because, you see, the 90s is when Street Fighter became extremely popular. It got a cartoon and even got a movie in theaters. The popularity of Street Fighter 2 meant tons of people were pronouncing unfamiliar names like Ryu for the first time, back when you couldn't just look up the correct pronunciation of things online. And people who pronounced character names incorrectly back then, often kept using those mispronunciations and carried it forward. This all helps explain why there's so many people mispronouncing Street Fighter Ryu and not other game Ryus.>>12442813https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIG-E-2dj8gThey said "rye-you" in the animated series too, see 4:28 in this video.
>>12442940>I can't for the life of me remember how they pronounced it in those lol. Both used "rye-you." Here's Ryu's actor from the movie talking about it:https://bristolbadfilmclub.co.uk/exclusive-interview-byron-mann-street-fighters-ryu/>And I heard there was a lot of dispute between Capcom and the American side of the production about how to pronounce Ryu’s name? Is that right? >Yeah, it was a problem from Day One when we were filming on the dock. Damian Chapa (who plays Ken) is meant to say my name and he say “Rye-you”. And I said, “Well, technically the correct pronounciation is “Ree-you”, but I don’t think anyone but the Japanese say it like that.”>That’s how you’re meant to say it, but Steven was there and he listened to both versions and just went, “We’ll go with Rye-you. It’s easier for the American audiences.”
