Is SMB the best game when it comes to disk storage/quality ratio?

>>12441853The rom for Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is one of the smallest in the SNES library at around 512 kb.
>>12441862>This image is 283 Kilobytes>(73 KB, 651x481)
>>12441853>Is SMB the best game when it comes to disk storage/quality ratio? It's probably about the limits of how complicated you could make a 40KB game, which was all the ROM size an NES could address without adding mapper chips onto the cart. Nearly every other NES game that was 40KB or less was considerably simpler and/or a port of an 80s arcade game like Pac-Man or Galaga.Unless you start counting homebrew:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWQ0591PAxM
Legend of Zelda in 128k

>>12442102When I originally made it it was 18KB, but someone at some point appears to have recompressed it and people started reposting that one.
>>12441853ocarina of time. 26mb. released today it would be 2 gb. n64 is a minigame console
>>12442162>released today it would be 2 gbIt's funny that you're not wrong and the port takes up about that much space.
>>12442135Around two or three years ago, 4chan added a faggy automatic compression system to images. If you want the full quality versions, you have to save from a third-party archive site. Most people don't, so many of the reposted images on this site are the shitty compressed versions.
>>12441853For me, it's Chaos Theoryhttps://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=25774https://youtu.be/gfk5Mqy3gpA
>>12443304Even for PNG files?
>>12441853Could be.
>>12443614>6 KBImpressive, very nice. Let's see Paul Allen's png encoder
>>12441853I would say kkrieger is but I'm not sure if that's old enough to qualify as "retro"if we're talking about only retro games then it's a pretty close contest. id say maybe atari 2600 games push the limits the most given the limitations
>>12443656I would only partially count it since it generates about 100MB of resources via script.
>>12443656I love that they managed to fit a chess game with an AI opponent in 128b of RAM.
>>12441853it truly is a lost art
>>12443425I think they finally fixed it this year. I know only webms and mp4s saved at full quality.
:)
>>12441853Castlevania 4 is very impressive for how many different backgrounds there are. Splatterhouse on PCE is good too.
They optimized building the level layouts so well that the graphics and level maps are only a fraction of the data compared to all the code that handles the physics.
