Tank controls were added to Resident Evil because of the nature of constantly switching camera angles with prerendered backgrounds, it gives you much more spacial awareness and prevents moments of near-epileptic camera switching.Tank controls were added to Silent Hill because Resident Evil had them.Silent Hill is an entirely 3D game with a camera that follows you and only uses fixed camera angles sparingly to bring your attention to certain key items, they make up very little of the game. Silent Hill is actively brought down by having tank controls, they don't add anything to the game like they do with Resident Evil, where the game was made with them in mind. They don't make the game "scarier" like people who don't understand why tank controls exist in the first place like to claim. It's why Silent Hill 2 and 3 give you the option to not use them and 4 did away with them all together.Classic Resident Evil would be worse without tank controls but Silent Hill is simply better without them.
>>12442485Yes agreed. Tank controls with the constantly moving camera of sh1 was fucking awful. Thank god sh2 and on had "3D controls".
>>12442485Silent Hill doesn't even have tank controls to fucking retard you strafe with the shoulder buttons. Not that there's anything wrong with tank controls.
>>12442485>Rotational (3D)>Directional (2D)This is the canon name of the control schemes in the game.
>>12442485Almost certainly the game "Fade to Black" is the inspiration to the point where the game almost looks like a beta version of SH. It's also where the bonus "self view" comes from. Harry moves and shoots just like the guy in this game. The character design is also extremely similar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKAov6sg4nc
>>12442559This is what happens after the UFO ending.
>>12442503The strafing always felt weird to me as well. I’m going to side with OP on this one. The movement in SH1 just feels janky.
>>12442485Resident Evil had tank controls because Alone in the Dark had tank controls. It wasn't "added in", it was the default.
>>12442764You can play the earliest available 1995 trade show build see that they even copied the 'double tap up and hold to run' from Alone in the Dark. You could also double tap and hold left or right to do a quickturn in that build. The run button didn't come along until a later version.
>>12442764>>12442772Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil both used pre-rendered backgrounds, which is why fixed camera angles made more sense. Silent Hill’s environments were fully 3D.
>>12442774There is nothing wrong with fixed camera angles or tank controls
>>12442559>>12442764These.>>12442772Alone in the Dark has better animations and movement momentum than Resident Evil honestly. Each footstep in AitD has its own acceleration and deceleration numbers, and each melee attack has different speed and range. The double tap to run actually adds a lot of tension and makes confrontations harder to avoid. And turning speed is tied to the speed of your character's movement rather than simple binary run/walk/stop states. Carnby turns around really fast while he's standing completely still. RE is a step down in many respects over AitD, but it's intentionally dumb because it's made for console babies.
>>12442789No there isn’t, but they make more sense when the environments are pre-rendered.
>>12442485>>12442487It makes the game more challenging. You want an already easy game to be even easier? Grow up.
>>12442559Very nice>>12442753Kek, also nice
>>12442797> Alone in the Dark has better animationslol
>>12442485>left stick moves forward, back and stafes>right stick turnsyou'll have to fuck around with controller configs but it's doable
>>12442878post a webm of how this works out.
>>12442487>Thank god sh2 and on had "3D controls".2D

>>12442764>>12442772>>12442774Resident evil was supposed to originally be an fps.
The game only has tank controls because that's what Japanese developers were working on at the time. Nintendo games were the outlier.
People who complain about tank controls have never driven a car.
>>12442797I don't like the Resident Evil trilogy design. But they have better animations, combat design, and gameplay loop than AITD. They lack mechanical complexity, but they do a lot with what little they have.
>>12442941driving games usually separate steering and acceleration/reversing. dualshock version of re1 actually has a control scheme like that.
>>12442485This is going to be a mind-blowing concept I know, but Silent Hill 1-3 don't have "Resident Evil" controls or "Tank" controls. Silent Hill provides you with the exact same set of movement controls as a standard FPS game, other than jumping. You can strafe, you can strafe-run, you can move while shooting. All from the very first game. Therefore, Silent Hill is just a straight up third person shooter like PUBG or something, just without the camera angle locked to your back. The "tank" control feeling comes from the fact that Harry, James, and Heather all have extremely heavy and consequential animations that result in you paying a penalty for any mistakes you make, a purposeful choice by the developers to increase tension.
'Tank controls' is a retarded term. We should be talking about camera centric controls vs character centric controls (in a third person game, but that should be implied), at least noone could argue about the definition then and it'd incorporate character centric controls with which you can strafe without question; but these words are too complicated for the average joe.The fact is, despite supporting both, SH2 and 3 are balanced around character centric controls. Camera centric controls allow you to instantly run in any direction, whereas character centric doesn't; so if it was balanced around camera centric with enemies able to catch to you and hit you even if instantly run in any direction, that would make the character centric controls too unfair or even impossible to use. The fact is the Silent Hill series never really cared about making the action and the movement possibilities balanced, it was always giving as much freedom to the player as possible regardless of how ridiculous it makes the gameplay; which is why they didn't care about turning the games even more into a joke by adding a movement system the games were never meant for in the first place.
>>12442974>Camera centric controls allow you to instantly run in any directionthere's nothing stopping a dev from adding an animation for sharp pivots.
>>12442485Silent Hill also had fixed camera angles, even if the environments were fully 3D and you were allowed some control of the camera.
>>12442969it's not really the same thing. in a typical shooter you can strafe in any direction immediately, it's a constant part of movement. in silent hill your strafe is locked to a roughly horizontal arc and it functions more as a distinct mode you occasionally enter into for combat rather than something that transforms the overall feel of the game.
>>12443032Silent Hill also has strafe running and it's an essential mechanic to dodge the final boss' lightning attack
>>12442797>Each footstep in AitD has its own acceleration and deceleration numbers, and each melee attack has different speed and range. And turning speed is tied to the speed of your character's movement rather than simple binary run/walk/stop states. Carnby turns around really fast while he's standing completely still.lmao and here’s what the game actually looks like. I can really FEEL those footsteps accelerating and decelerating:https://youtu.be/zsGaVrMr9N8?si=r2vH7Hpf30W00_yE
>>12442485>Tank controls were added to Silent Hill because Resident Evil had them. You're ignoring how important this is. People had already been playing RE games with those controls for 3 years, and once you get used to tank controls there's no real issue with them. Konami went with what fans of the genre were used to, not what people five years in the future wanted.
>>12443273As someone else pointed out, it’s kind of a weird hybrid of familiar survival horror tank controls and third person shooter controls since you can strafe and shoot while moving.
>>12442932footage of me trying to attend my country's games at this year's FIFA World Cup.
>>12442936Yeah and it was inspired by Sweet Home and Shinji Mikami made it 100% by himself.
>>12443280that point is completely asinine.
>>12443379Kek, based. I’m so sick of hearing RE fans bitch and moan about how Iwao didn’t get the credit he deserved. Give it a fucking rest.
>>12442838You can make it more challenging by blindfolding yourself too you dumb fat faggot. Are you too pussy for a real challenge?
the game is supposed to play like shit
play
>>12442559I know SH2 has a hidden map function that looks almost identical to that game, and i think Sh1 has it too. Fucking hate the remake because searching for anything brings up the shitmake. Otherwise I'd show a picture of it.
>>12443562You don't understand, me saying that a famous dev is a hack makes of me a real connoisseur!

>>12442485>Silent Hill is actively brought down by having tank controlsIf you retards spent 1/10th the time just learning how tank controls worked that you do bitching about them you'd have no problems with them. They're not hard to get used to, they work just fine. Stop being a faggot. You could get used to tank controls and never have to actively think about them again the time it took you to make this post, op. I had to stop and remember that Silent Hill used tank controls when I read this, and I've played the game multiple times, because I don't spend my time crying about game control schemes that take me a whopping 2 minutes to learn.
>>12442485I never had an issue with them while playing SH, so I don't get what the issue is.
>>12443828>You could get used to tank controls and never have to actively think about them again the time it took you to make this post, Not if he has sub 100 IQ
>>12443948No need, really.
>>12442838I don't mind challenging games that are fun. Silent Hill is not fun. I treat SH games like old Japanese adventure games.>>12442926Woops you're right. Yes I meant "2D" controls.
Do people who hate tank controls struggle to drive cars? I can imagine them doing a shoulder check and instantly losing control of their vehicle.
>>12446606The funny part is that these controls are also more realistic to how people move around in real life. No one can turn that quickly.
