Let's look at the historically most popular Pokemon aside from Pickey Mouse>Charizard >Gengar>Mewtwo >Scyther>Scizor>Absol>Greninja >Krookodile >Lucario>Garchomp It's clear that the fanbase overall prefers "cool" and even "edgy" designs but they double down on plushmon chasing the Pikachu dragon they'll never strike gold with twice and silly shit like increasingly unanimated objectmon. It would probably be more popular if at least half of every Gen was cool/edgy

They're sleek and predatory looking, not chubby/based on roundness with round button or googly eyes and stubby limbs. Then you have ones like Jolteon and Umbreon who themselves just are "cool" designs without the feminine leaning.So while I see what you were trying to do but it really falls kinda flat. They made a pokemon that looks like that in gen 8 and it just looks dumb and really out of place. Pokemon's art style has a lot of problems (none of which started in gen 3) but the absence of abstract crystaline ghost dogs isn't one of them.

I have no problem with the franchise being an assortment of monsters, beasts, supernatural or whatever. I don't mind if they are cool or cute or weird, there are plenty of things like yokai which are just possesed objects and plenty of things like fairies and gnomes that can be classified as "cute".My problem is with GF intentionally shaving down scary or cool elements of designs while in the development stage for no apparent reason, though i suspect most of it is for merchandising.
