Nothing has killed retro gaming quite like speedrunning, imagine your own way to play an old game being to spend hours replaying the same level just for a miniscule time difference.
I don't care how other people enjoy their vidya
If you want my honest opinion, it's fine if a person wants to get autistical and get super good at playing the game more power to them. It doesn't affect me and I enjoy watching some speedruns every now and then, Japan has really good runners and no trans
>imagine your own way to play an old game being to spend hours replaying the same levelbut enough about 1ccs

>>12444615>Nothing has killed retro gaming quite like speedrunningtrue
>>12444618This. In my opinion, the only real "harm" it has done in the realm of retrogame criticism is the proliferation of certain critiques which seem rooted around the idea of speed running, like blanket whining about autoscrolling segments in platformers, or bitching about any and all forms of backtracking (see: the Mega Man X games, when whether or not you HAD to backtrack to obtain powerups was irrelevant, because the games were designed around initial playthroughs, where the player expected to spend several hours over the course of a few days, experimenting with weapons, finding things they couldn't reach, then returning later with a new powerup to see if they could use it to get the item, or just replaying the whole level in order to find its Heart Tank). A lot of younger gamers were likely exposed to old games by way of speedrunner streams and highlight videos, in a world where you can quickly scrub through an entire playthrough video of almost any game you can think of, so of course the idea of these relatively short and straightforward games having once been mysterious experiences meant to be leisurely enjoyed feels foreign to them.
Speedrunning is an extension of things embedded at the very core at old video games, things like challenge, timers, score etc You're just a retarded poltard who wants to make an "anti tranny" thread because other poltards memes told you it's what it's all about. What really damaged old games are things like savestates and fast forward. The state of "retro gaming" would be so much better if these things had been debugging functions only available to devs and romhackers. Retards could still use gameshark codes and the likes but that'd be a step up from savestates.
>>12444615Nothing has "killed" retro gaming. You are perfectly able to enjoy retro games your own way regardless of how other people play them. I concur with >>12444697, you're just trying to stir shit.
>>12444697I was in the retro achievements thread and one poster remarked how he can only play games with fast forward and 3 posters replied not mocking him but agreeing. The presence of these emulator cheats is inviting undesirables to the discussion and it is not pleasant.

Speedrunning actually made me enjoy boring Mario on nes again.Running through SMB1 knowing im one of the fastest in the world to do it, feels fucking good.(im not saying im a pro speedrunner, but the times I get are definitely faster than 99.9% of the population that ever played)It feels good to perfectly do stuff

>>12444638>like blanket whining about autoscrolling segments in platformers, or bitching about any and all forms of backtrackingthose were criticisms that predated speedrunning becoming popular. If anything complaints about backtracking have lessened since then but I remember that being a huge sticking point for journalists at the time. People not liking autoscrollers is just a universal truth and transcends the youtube opinion.
>>12446025agreed
>>12444615People would rather watch their parasocial crush do this crap than play the games themselves
>>12444697Your second paragraph is correct but your first paragraph is dead wrong. Many of these games, particularly the ones where excess time does not convert to score at the end of the stage don't give two shits about clear time. The myopia speedrunners have around inserting it as a skill metric in games that don't factor in time is damaging to the actual things the game is designed around. Like taking damage or using less ammo. In an attempt to smush down the time metric which is irrelevant, these speedrunners will take more hits and use more ammo or perform at a skill deficit on purpose at stuff that adds more time. And if you argue they can simultaneously make zero errors on each of those other dimensions in one playthrough then congrats they're playing a solved game and should graduate to a more complex game to get their fix. You don't speedrun tic tac toe when you solve it you move the fuck on.
>>12446063>mutts can't use brains not even journos being paid to play a game.Is normal to explore a game, but current post 1990 gens are too dumb to be able to play classics hence they cry if they have to go back but hey shutting down game because about to lose a life is no biggie for you even if you lose progress.

Speedrunning is an abomination. Invented by a dead generation of soulless mechanical creatures that can only treat games as a number statistic and not a creative, communicative work to be experienced and enjoyed. It is not surprisingly, NOT SURPRISING AT ALL, that speedrunning is so heavily in bed with the "transgender" community. They are both fundamentally based in the same rejection of meaning and the rote pursuit of indiscriminate, unvalued pleasure.
>>12444618Is that true?
>>12444697>Speedrunning is an extension of things embedded at the very core at old video games, things like challenge, timers, score etcIncorrect. You are trying to apply an incorrect category to all games because a subcategory of gaming contained certain elements. Most games past the dawn of arcade classics were not designed to maximize speed of playthrough at the expense of all else, they were designed to communicate ideas and states of mind.>You're just a retarded poltard who wants to make an "anti tranny" thread because other poltards memes told you it's what it's all about.Incorrect "everything I don't like is pol"-obsessed projection. Why would you even bring up "trannies"?
For any human endeavor, there will exist men who obsess over it and men who will compete at extreme levels, and normalfags will quite reasonably find it entertaining. For reasons unknown, a certain class of troon is correlated with hyper-masculinity. Bruce(->"Caitlyn") Jenner was an olympic gold medalist. The Wachowski brothers(->"sisters") made a movie full of physical combat and over 2,000 gunshots. The first videogame champion in the US, winner of a space invaders championship in 1980 (high score), was a kid named Will (->"Rebecca") Heineman. But most of the space invaders competitors weren't trannies. Most speedrunners are just normal males with higher than average obsessiveness and who have chosen to focus that obsession on videogames. Videogame "communities" in general tend to be naturally tolerant of anyone who shares interest in their hobby and doesn't cause trouble. Specific organizations are always suspect as anyone who has been paying even the slightest bit of attention to politics since Gamergate should realize. GDQ gets funding from non-profit foundations (eg PCF) and many charities like that are run by "ruling class" types, which is where the LGBQT+ ideological bias flows from. This is a problem across MANY videogame communities not just speedrunning.

>>12445852What am I supposed to see here?
>>12444615Speedrunners shouldn't also be forced to be hosts too. Or have any personality. Just like 99% of Olympic Athletes they just do what they love and get medals and go home. We know their names of course and they get a clip of them happy. The only thing that makes speedrunning awful is forcing them to make chatter about stuff and dressing as a trans. Almost wonder if they never said they were trans then people would just ignore it. Take away their hosting duties and they could just be themselves.

>>12445852lol i thought they banned that game over that bit kek
>>12444615Also I forgot to say one thing if GDQ is reading this please consider: have a speedrunning room where people are alone unless its explicitly a social game I mean EXPLICITLY like Mario Party or four player speedrun.I want the couch to do a live react to the people playing. These would be experts or professionally cool people not weirdos, people who have manners and charm. After the run is over the runners leaves the speedrunning room and gets applause and wave goodbye. Stop making people "host and run" if its going to lead to cringe or creepiness. Then I think viewers will start coming back again.
>>12446640I don't care if people use shaders unless you're streaming.>>12445751That's true of many hobbies. I knew a guy who ran Iron Man Triathlons and he said the exact same thing. When asked, "Do you ~enjoy~ running an Iron Man?"His answer was, "I think it's worth it."This concept is foreign to the hedonist who lives for pleasure.

>>12444697>Retards could still use gameshark codesLiterally the same level of cheating as savestating. You only like it better, because it's "authentic".
>>12446329>time doesn't convert to score/ranking per the developers intention, so you shouldn't challenge yourself on completion time>because you'd be taking extra damage or spending extra ammo, even though that very often also does not convert to score/rankingYou're accusing time of being arbitrary, because it impedes on some other arbitrary measurement of skill you pulled out of your ass. Beating a game as fast as you can seems less contrived than beating it using the least amount of ammunition, but they're both just challenges that can be measured. Who gives a fuck?
>>12446636>can only treat games as a number statistic and not a creative, communicative work to be experienced and enjoyed.>fundamentally based in the same rejection of meaning and the rote pursuit of indiscriminate, unvalued pleasure.contradiction of the decade
>>12444615Im at the point in my life where i think video games are a waste of time but honestly I find speed runners inspiring. >>12444615>imagine your own way to play an old game being to spend hours replaying the same level just for a miniscule time difference. And that's their choice. If you don't like it, just play it the normal way. It literally has no effect on your own experience.
