This game is a shooting gallery whereas Star Successor is much closer to a traditional shoot 'em up. The bosses in the sequel are undeniably better but overall the N64 version is unmatched

From what I remember from Star Successor, both characters had jetpacks so it felt more like Space Harrier, while original has a lot of platforming besides the shooting.
Also, playing Star Successor with a regular controller is hard as fuck, the game is balanced toward rapidly aiming with the wiimote

yeah, pretty much Space Harrier with independent targeting. S&P2 gives you a score bonus for staying on the ground but there are many stages with forced flight. I liked how hard the sequel was compared to the first game btw.
