Topic thread. I want to gather as much information as I can about EB64. Information about it isn't really compiled anywhere. Conveniently I should say. Digging through the archive or the discord is messy. Also discuss anything about EB64 you want. Thoughts? Do you wish we got it instead of GBA Mother 3? Or is it better it got canned?
better it got canned
Bad it got canned
it's a shame it got canned but i can't imagine mother 3 as anything but the 2d chibi game with a weirdly dark story. i hope someone finds and dumps a eb64 rom at the very least so we can see how it was originally supposed to be.
>>12448583
>>12448494wouldve been a shit game either way as itoi was washed at that point and forgot what made the first two games great, or didnt care anymore. but fully 3d wouldve been a lot more interesting and wouldve given n64 another desperately needed rpg
the competely different designs of the first set along with the notebook trilogy that inspired this game makes me wonder if lucas and claus were originally going to turn out to not really be brothers or leave it ambiguous. m3 also has a plot line of the people living out fantasy lives and living out roles after getting memory wiped.maybe lucas and claus were originally included with everyone else in getting memory wiped and simply lived as brothers from that point on.it would fit with the notebook trilogy's lucas and claus not really being brothers. one was just a made up person the other came up with to cope, but they were based on their real brother who maybe shows up at the end of the trilogy. someone shows up claiming to be the other's long lost brother then kills himself. i forget which was which.maybe m3 was originally going to leave it ambiguous who the masked man even really was. was he lucas' long lost brother or someone else?there's also a magazine page saying something like:>are they brothers? you will soon see.it seems suspicious.maybe the questioning of their brotherhood was going to go somewhere and the game wasn't going to truly answer if the masked man was really claus. or maybe it was going to be revealed their lives as brothers was made up. or maybe they were really always brothers and my line of questioning is just baseless hypothesizing and the magazine clipping means nothing.or maybe claus was originally a memory wiped ness who lived out the role of lucas' brother since claus originally looked like ness.it fits because porky gets ahold of claus and makes him his slave. maybe ness was going to actually play a role in m3. it WAS supposed to follow up more on m2 supposedly.
>>12448607what makes you say he was washed? i think he was just over ambitious. he wanted to try to make things as big and grand as possible and be cinematic and subversive. having to figure out how to make m3 less cinematic for the gba and still work as a story was a struggle apparently.
>>12448646Never cared any of the N64 designs, but man, that early GBA concept is whacked, like a middleground between the weird 3D proportions and the final game. I do like the western-style outfits that Lucas and Claus wear in that pic, it fits the setting more. For the most part though I think things turned out for the best in the final version, save the music (in comparison to 64DD). Brownie Brown probably could've asked Nintendo to port over to DS to get better sound, and bonus, add optional touchscreen beat-drumming, but maybe they didn't feel like pushing their luck.
>>12448494It's disappointing we didn't get this fever dream of a game.https://earthbound-mother64.weebly.com/
>>12448673i like the final n64 designs. probably because they're the closest to the final gba designs. i used to hate how the n64 version looked in general because it was so rough looking but it grew on me over the years. ultimately, i'm happy with how the gba version turned out and i'm glad they went with a look that resembled the prior mother games. in the end, they went back to the notebook trilogy for design inspiration, just without the white shirts and maybe the patent leather shoes.
>>12448721
the notebook trilogy also draws attention to hair stroking being unforgettable. lucas has a flashback of hinawa stroking his hair too.
>>12448673I just think that Itoi was emotionally done with game development at that point. It seemed like Mother 2 had its own issues which caused the development to go on longer than it otherwise would have, and after Mother 3 he rightfully thought>fuck this im done
Japanese people wouldn't have gotten to play it if it had been stuck on n64. Cverall satisfied with how things turned out.
>>12448734i thought it was a combination of not wanting to go through troubled development like you say, knowing people would just want to see more from the the currently existing mother games, and his kid being grown up now.
What are the chances a rom will turn up someday?
>>12448745unlikely. If it does turn up, don't expect it any time soon. However, if it does, I will be pleasantly surprised.
>>12448607>n64 another desperately needed rpgyou can say that again. we got quest 64 and... aydin chronicles the first mage? i'm thinking turn based.
>>12448745unlikely but i'm hopeful. a lot of betas and unreleased shit has been getting found. we even got dragon hopper.
>>12448785dont forget paper mario and ogre battle and... wait no that was literally everything.
>>12448653overly ambitious is a good way to put it. I say washed because personally I didn't find the writing humorous or charming in 3 at all. I would literally describe it as reddit humor. but maybe that's just because we are stuck with an unofficial trannylation.
>>12448810oh yeah, ty. can't believe i forgot paper mario though.
>>12448814i thought m3 was pretty funny but to each their own. do you have anything specific in mind that made m3's translation feel weird to you?
>>12448745I mean we got the original N64 Dinosaur Planet. Anything is possible. Although, I think the giga leak would have been our best bet as I would think Nintendo would have upped their security ten fold to avoid anything like that ever happening again.
>>12448916how exactly did we get the gigaleak anyway? i don't know the specifics behind how it happened. who leaked stuff?
>>12448745Nintendo, Itoi or somebody at HAL has the space world demo somewhere for sure. >>12448785N64 almost had Dragon Warrior 7, a working build was playable in 97.
It's a miracle Mother 3 even released at all.
>>12448785Shiren the Wanderer 2
>>12448745It’s possible if some collector in Japan dies or something, but the problem is that from what it sounds like, there isn’t a whole lot of game there. Iwata said that only 30-40 percent of the game was done even after they scaled things back, and from what some Nintendo tester said the prototype that Brownie Brown had for reference would crash a ton and wasn’t really playable. So the only value the N64 version of Mother 3 would have would come from datamining.
>>12449382Yeah, I think even the promotional/E3 scenes were just built to show off the projected capability of the game, we pretty much saw everything that was playable because the team was inexperienced worling on a 3D engine. There's more value seeing internal documents or early GBA builds than a 64 version.
>>12448745Someone would need to hack HAL for it>i wonder if there has ever been a kirby prototype leaked that wasn't a kiosk demo or something>https://hiddenpalace.org/Twinkle_Popo_(prototype)>some japnigger is holding a prototype of the first kirby game hostagerage.jpg
>>12448494Blues Brothers 2000 reused its assets.
>>12449705any interesting discoveries in its files?
>>12449382I think he also said they would've only had to work on it for 1-2 more years before it would be finished. I'm kinda sad they couldn't just do that but the GCN had to come first. I get it.
>>12449705Is there more to it than picrel?
>>12449591>He doesn't even respond to the people asking him to dump it>Only posted because he knew it would give him lots of likes and follows
>>12449591You'd think there'd be someone attention whoring over owning some kind of cartridge/disk of EB64 if they did have it with how people are nowadays and how it's the next biggest unreleased game.
>>12448693>WALTUH
>>12448745nintendo has had like two major data leaks in the last 6 years. Unless it was already recovered, but not posted, I doubt we'll see a leak of it.
>>12448745You can probably expect an eventual secrets of Mother 3 book to talk about design decisions and unused concepts. EB64 is a pipe dream. Maybe when Itoi passes someone will find it in his house and preserve it.
I'm new in this Earthbound lore. Mother 3 = Earthbond 64? And is Mother 3 are great rpg to compete with Playstation' rpgs, especially Final Fantasy?
>>12449949>Mother 3 = Earthbond 64?yes. EB64 is specifically an older version of M3 that never released.
early screenshots give me horror vibes. maybe lucas and claus were originally going to be more like the twins from the notebook trilogy.
>>12450056assuming the n64 screenshot is from the parents' pov, the gba even kept the table placements for the family where they all sit.
>>12449889There was a guy trying to sell a 64DD devkit on here a while ago who had a disk used for Mother 3 and later confirmed it had already been wiped, assuming the label was real to begin with https://x.com/64DDexchange/status/1888829430493249962
>>12450056it could be alec's house too i guess. the construction of the house in n64 doesn't fully fit either one though so it's hard to tell which one it is or it could just be a placeholder house design not meant to be anything in the finished game.
>>12450075that's unfortunate. i guess it's also impossible to do data recovery on 64DDs?
>>12448693hmm...
>>12450105Recovery of magnetic media that's been zeroed out is theoretically possible but it's "a three letter agency is trying to get you" level stuff, and if it was written to more than once + the layout of the rom changed between those writes it would be pretty much a 0% chance of getting anything usable.
>>12450062what's maybe interesting about these placements for the final game is there are plates in use where flint and lucas sit post timeskip. it could be inferred they still ate together regularly before flint went to the mountains each day. but... these plates are also like this pre timeskip so it could also be inferred that's just how the plates always were since the day hinawa was lost and no one ever bothered to clean up. flint's and lucas' house was said to never change at all between the timeskip. so it could include the dirty dishes.but i like the first thought more. both fit though.
>>12450129that makes sense.>>12450075whose name was written on it anyway? was it itoi?
Would love to see a build resurface one day.
>>12450139The seller was probably referring to a document from the recycler that linked it back to HAL rather than the label on the disk, here's the original thread https://desuarchive.org/vr/thread/11266797It could have been a larper but something about this just comes across to me as not trying hard enough to be fake. The guy seemed to be willing to deal with Hidden Palace too, we possibly lost EB64 because an actual HAL employee knew to wipe the disk before disposing of it and it makes me seethe
Are there any links in regards to staff working at HAL or M3 that later went on to work on Okage Shadow King? That game feels the closest to the N64 version of any rpg ive played.
>>12449949I'd say the MOTHER games are definitely flawed, but enjoyable. They have soul. They play closer to Dragon Quest though, so they may throw you off if you're way more used to Final Fantasy
>>12449868It’s also not hard to see why they wanted to focus on the GC, I think the N64 lost to the Saturn in Japan and Mother 3 would have just been relegated to poor sales on a dead platform if it came out. Not to mention that the game was already in production for a few years, they probably figured it wasn’t worth the financial cost to release it, let alone localize it.
>>12450148what's this old logo from?>>12450161what did he and hidden palace say to each other?and as far as eb64 goes, there are gonna be a lot of different builds so we'll have to hope that whoever was overseeing data wiping at the "forest of strange creatures" stage didn't have anything to do with it around the earlier or later stages like when it was being called "chimera forest" or "end of the pig king".
>>12450168could you elaborate on what makes them similar?
>>12450161>blue discs are usually emptyare they always demo discs or something that are prone to being overwritten by other games at later dates?
>>12450185>>12449949if you can play pokemon, you can handle the mother franchise
Iwata was the only known person at Nintendo who was pushing for Mother to get more attention in the west. With him gone, Mother 3 will probably stay in Japan.
>>12450240I kinda wished they would've started over on the GCN but the dev team was too tired of M3 by that point.
>>12450265IDK, I just know he followed them on twitter after it was suggested in the thread, then showed up with that tweet a few months later and said the devkit was sold a few days later.>>12450271They're for development, the "demo" could have been for some internal meeting where they showed off their progress, it was already on the base N64 by the actual Spaceworld demo.
>>12450319so what are the odds one of these development discs would still have eb64 on it? or are our best bets hoping the spaceworld demo is still out there and any prior/later builds might not even exist anymore?
>>12450338There were the disks labeled M3-KM found in the 2000s which were all overwritten with other games, maybe they have data left over if the games they were overwritten with were smaller but I think the guy who had those disappeared or something.Actually just found this while looking those up, the one we've been talking about is mentioned here https://wikibound.info/wiki/EarthBound_64, looks like it really was legit and they attempted to save it. seething rn
>>12450367>Itoi said that "the first half of the game runs pretty normally", with a large-scale twist occurring in the middle of the game.i really wonder what this would've been.
>>12450367>The whereabouts of the few copies produced are largely unknown. At least one is believed to be with Brownie Brown, and some others may be circulating, but without a concrete trail.>At least two post-1998 cartridge copies of EarthBound 64 were sent to Nintendo of America in early 2000, for the purposes of producing a localisation prototype. The whereabouts of these cartridges, as well as the amount of work finished for this localisation, is unknown.our best bets really are just nintendo getting hacked again or playing lottery with blue 64DD discs.
>>12450367>According to an employee who worked on testing Mother 3, and played through most of the first chapter of EarthBound 64, "there is no mystery MOTHER game that was never released. You got MOTHER 3. When development was handed over to Brownie Brown, they were also given everything they needed to get the job done, including previous reference material. The GBA version is the final draft of a vision that took a long time to get out the door".idk if i can really believe this when it looks like so much was gutted from eb64 and it was going to be a lot darker. i need to see the ending with the n64 models and no dialogue at least.
>>12450413I dont buy this excuse either considering the destroyed city in the 64 version and the cut final boss fight in the gba version. I'm sure most is there, but it will always feel like an abridged compromise instead of a true vision.
>>12450168I think the N64 Zelda titles feel similar to how EB64 looked. OOT literally lets you do a 10 year timeskip and you see how the world changed overtime like how they wanted to do in EB64 over a 10 year timeskip. It also has the graveyard attendant who died and turns into a ghost.Majora's mask has creepy undertones and takes place in a small town changing as the world nears its end. It dealing with the end of the world also feels like M3.But for Okage, it's hard to find a complete list of people of who worked on EB64.Your best bet is probably digging through old magazine scans of EB64 for developer mentions.Mobygames has a complete list of game devs for Okage and M3 GBA too if you want to compare and hope maybe some EB64 devs jumped to Brownie Brown for M3.https://www.mobygames.com/game/5116/okage-shadow-king/credits/ps2/https://www.mobygames.com/game/29870/mother-3/credits/gameboy-advance/
>>12450446as much as i love mother 3, i agree. it feels like lost potential. there are some things that don't really have explanations either like where your dp comes from as you explore and fight chimeras. in mother 1 and 2, you get money from your dad. but where does it come from in mother 3?there was going to be more mentions of what's under flint's hat. magazines draw attention to it. so the joke dialogue at the end doesn't just come out of nowhere.there's a cut plotline with a giant chimera attacking tazmily and nana's father going missing. and kraken dung washing up the shore was going to be important.the way it's mentioned "claus was into high tech stuff" and "the 2 brothers go on different paths in life" kinda makes it sound like claus helping the pigmask army might've been intentional instead of him being brainwashed but that's just theoryfagging from me. but it makes sense why claus would've wanted to join them since he liked technology which was a character detail that was scrubbed from the gba version.i kinda wonder if the chimeras were going to be less morbid/pathetic because itoi apparently had a theme of chimeras representing some kind of unlikely beauty with them being impossible fusions of animals. but they don't seem beautiful in the final game. maybe the animal splicing was going to be more gray instead of them all looking like they can barely survive.
>>12450446and where is the part in the gba version where the protagonist gets bullied? eb64 absolutely is a secret mother game that never got to see the light of day.
>>12450481now that i think about it, i remember a descriptor from somewhere that says something like "claus is protective of his less outgoing brother". but there's not much showing off anything like like that in the final game. claus doesn't let lucas come with him to fight the drago i guess. but if lucas was bullied because he was weak this line would make a lot more sense. people were probably a lot harsher towards him for being a crybaby instead of just lightly teasing him.
>>12450404I would put down more money on the blue disk lottery than another hack being the result of more EB64 knowledge coming out. Brownie Brown, APE/Creatures and HAL are bound to keep things more locked down in the wake of past hacks, though I also think that with how many times this has happened to Nintendo in the past few years, if they had MOTHER 3/EB64 content on there we probably would have found out about it by now. It doesn’t have the same prestige as something like Mario, Zelda or Pokémon, but it’s at least known among normalfags as>that series with characters in Smash Bros and also an inspiration for undertaleso autists would still know enough to keep an eye out on it for cred.
>>12450481I don’t know if I would call it a secret Mother game. >>12450446 describes it best where the GBA version was a heavily compromised version of the N64 plans, and even those had to be reigned in after the 64DD failed and Itoi seemingly planned out a huge epic of a game despite a lack of preproduction.
>>12449949I can't believe your ESL dumbass got spoonfed.
>>12450496or maybe the bullying was just some variation of the tanetane scenes. imagine how cool it would've been to see the psychedelic mushroom trip in 3d with the rough surreal graphics.
>>12450523it's also unclear if the employee who said it's the same as mother 3 played an earlier version on the 64DD or if it was after it moved to a cartridge and more stuff was cut. it also only says he played the first chapter of eb64. so the statement is still questionable either way. i just don't buy it. there's too much cut content plus who knows how much other stuff was cut that we don't know about. i'm sure a lot of the story is the same in the gba version but enough is different where eb64 feels like its own game.
>>12450510how exactly do these leaks work? does nintendo's entire database get hacked or just specific hard drives get hacked?
how exactly do people check the contents of blue development 64dd discs? is it true a development unit is needed to boot one?
>>12450496it always felt like claus' and lucas' relationship was lacking. claus' suicide is the biggest emotional climax of the game but he has 15 minutes of screentime before he turns into a brainwashed evil slave and becomes mute for the remainder of his appearances. does the ending still work well enough anyway? to some extent but it feels like something is missingclaus is the brash older brother who does the hard and heroic thing to save his younger and much gentler brother. claus knows lucas can't and won't end him. claus knows he has to do it.the scene follows exactly what the narration between hinawa and flint says the brothers will do. they'll fight a lot and help each other.claus helps lucas by doing the brash thing of ending himself so he can't be a threat to him anymore. and lucas helps claus by doing the gentle thing of caring for him while dying so he can pass on peacefully and happily.this is what their dynamic is MAYBE supposed to be. but idk. i think a scene showing how exactly how they help each other before claus goes missing would've helped their final resolution. the removed scene of them fighting as kids should've been in the final game too imo.
>>12450469>into high tech stuffWould have been interesting if Lucas has psi and Claus was maybe the Jeff of the two.
>>12450614Man, i remember in the early 2000s DD dev kits were on ebay for the same price as regular ones go for now.
>>12450282okay, true
>>12450595The whole situation is just messy, but from what I understand an autist called Zammis Clark breached Nintendo's internal databases in 2018 and walked away with 2.54 TB worth of files from that hack. And unless that figure represents a small piece of a larger iceberg, its fair to assume that at some EB64 data would have been on there, unless of course that information is backed up somewhere else like one of their subsidiaries in the form of Brownie Brown or Creatures, Inc. And who knows if the prototype or other things like concept art are even backed up digitally on their end. The other problem is that its hard to tell how much (or how little) was even released to the public. Clark definitely shared information with a bunch of other people, but did they also get the full 2.54tb of information or just smaller pieces of it? Could EB64 have been on there this entire time and it's just being data hoarded, or was it such a low priority that nobody sought to look for it when Clark had those files, and now it's never seeing the light of day because Nintendo won their case against Clark and probably seized all his drives? There's too much questions involved and for me its easier to assume that someone in Japan is just sitting on one of many EB64 prototypes dev carts.
>>12451478I didn't realize the leak was that fucking huge, what the fuck
>>12451546Neither did I, and apparently all that came out were a few gigabytes of info. Who knows if they were compressed to make it easily shareable or not. But if EB64 was on that database, then searching it out was not a high priority in favor of appealing to the Star Fox furries, Pokémon and bing bing wahoo fans. And with that information likely seized following Clark’s arrest and Nintendo beefing up their security, I don’t ever see us getting more info on EB64 outside of the blue cart lottery, or unless Itoi and other devs come out to show us more unseen concepts.
>>12451478>2.54 TBSize of the hard drive not the amount of stolen data.
>>12451892oh, that makes it feel more reasonable with all the leak stuff then
>>12451478>Could EB64 have been on there this entire time and it's just being data hoardedI hope that if someone did get a hold of EB64 that they would realize they'd be a hero to the people by releasing it rather than hoarding it for whatever small amount of satisfaction there is in being one of the few people to play it.
Part of me wants to see what else the environments were like in EB64's take on things, because where the fuck are Salsa and Samba in this image. What is this land of big fuck off lilypads
>>12451478all these questions just point to the complexity of these hacks in general though. there's already a fine case here how they could have eb64 stored somewhere but no one would've shared it along with everything else in the leak.
>>12451892how much data was stolen then?
>>12451880a few gigabytes is still huge considering what was leaked was old games.
>>12450284>Mother 3 will probably stay in JapanDoesn't matter anymore in the slightest. Itoi is done with Mother and anyone that cared would've already played the translation patch from nearly 20 years ago.
>>12451041what's also interesting is there was a picture of an older claus with a buzz cut. i assume this is either post timeskip claus and his identity wasn't going to be hidden at all, which might further tie into claus intentionally helping the pigmasks because he doesn't appear to be a chimera here so likely not brainwashed, but then again i can't see his body, or he was originally just going to be way older than lucas.really makes me curious how claus' character was originally going to be.
>>12450284I still want to believe in the rumor posted on /v/ that a remake of the original 64 version was being worked on internally at Nintendo, which would give them the ability to totally change portions of the soundtrack that may have been preventing an international release of the gba version.
>>12452541link to the rumor and og post? sounds cool but i doubt it. itoi sounded uninterested in ever continuing mother and mother 3 was a huge strain on him i doubt he ever wants to revisit as a creative dev.
>>12452541i really need to see this scene with the n64 models. was this scene even going to originally be in the game or was it a gba addition i wonder... the gba version didn't just gut certain things. it added stuff too.
>>12452537maybe claus was originally going to be more like the average tazmily citizen who grows to like the idea of the pigmasks and making it big in new pork city through the happy boxes.maybe he enlists to make it big similar to isaac.along with just liking high tech stuff.would claus have still been the other guy who's evil that pulls the needles though? would claus have arguments with lucas over who should be pulling the needles?
>>12452546I dont think i have it anymore. Keep in mind this would have been from a few years ago since the post claimed it was the next major rpg project Nintendo was pushing after the release of xenoblade 3 and im sure by now they have already released a couple other ones.
>>12452576probably fake then.
>>12452567I could certainly see the original plot going, based on the book it was inspired by and Itoi as a writer, in a direction where Claus isn't as stereotypically a enemy character like in the final game, and it instead goes along the lines of a piece of classic literature, the perspective of a changing culture from two twin brothers, each with their own feelings on the change occurring, the old ways coming under threat by the new, maybe both under the effects of different kinds of propaganda that drives them into eventual conflict with each other, maybe the story even switching between who you play as.
>>12452063i think it might've been an area within sunshine forest with lots of platforming or something.
>>12452587i think that would've been interesting af.i often wonder how much might've changed in how closely m3 was inspired by the notebook trilogy. there's that one picture with claus and lucas just sitting in the dark too that seems kinda creepy.and with how m3 liked to change the player character, i could absolutely see claus as having been playable at some point for some duration.i also want to spitball another hypothesis. itoi said the red pigmask(s) is the highest rank for the n64 version. i'm not sure we ever see several at a time. it's possible there was only one and it was claus. or were multiple shown at once? the red fits his color scheme.
>>12452608one problem though, is the height doesn't line up with how tall lucas gets. so either claus was still young when he became a top pigmask soldier, or it isn't claus (and the height might not even mean anything because all pigmasks are short in the n64 version are they all adults?), or the designs were still being changed around often and nothing was set in stone yet, or all pigmasks were chimeras or man made creations similar to the claymen.
>>12452608another possibilty is the red pigmask had what partially became claus' role in the final gba version. it being the highest rank probably means it was the commander. i don't think it would've been used to pull the needles though. the ending was always intended to be between 2 brothers and that likely means it was over the final needle.but maybe somewhere between all the story changes there was a powerful commander pigmask who gets in the party's way at times and that was combined into claus in the final game.
if claus was more of an active player and wanted to pull the needles for his own reasons, would he still have killed himself in the final battle and let lucas pull the final needle?
>>12452662it could also be something like, "neither of them knew the other is their brother until sometime during the final battle". like in the final game claus would've still killed himself after realizing he was fighting his brother. maybe claus did initially want to pull the needles for his own reasons but had a reason to back out and suicide after realizing his brother was still alive or something.his reasons for enlisting in the pigmask army might've been partially due to being cut off from his family and thinking they're gone but seeing lucas filled him with hope and grief and so he decided to kill himself.
>>12452637>there was a powerful commander pigmask who gets in the party's way at timesif this was part of the case, I wonder if that part was split between Claus and the Fierce Pork Trooper
>>12452730it's interesting to think about. maybe the red pigmask was a comedic character then. and he got split into claus as the commander and the fierce pork trooper for comedic scenes the devs didn't want to part with, like showing him merchandise of his favorite band and passifying him. i mean, it's a pretty good joke.
red pigmask in this hypothetical scenario being a comedic character tracks with the rest of the pigmasks. they're all played for laughs.claus in the final game is the only exception.
>>12448653>>12449705>>12452063The thing you miss in the transition from 2D to 3D is the more interesting camerashots. There's this view of the Osohe castle in the distance that you can see in certain promo screenshots. Evidently the Super Smash Bros. Melee team liked it too, because they turned it into a reflection you can see on trophies (Melee was planned to have Lucas replace Ness if Mother 3 released earlier)!
>>12452772well how could you blame the melee devs? osohe castle looks great.
>>12448502fpbp. the gba game was bad enough. its best we pretend the franchise ended with earthbound.
>>12452730also consider the following:>The Fierce Pork Trooper was originally fought upon returning to Osohe Castle with Wess in Chapter 2. This was likely replaced by the Claymen Boss in the final version, but the presence of "Unfounded Revenge" as a Chapter 2 song in the sound player suggests this may have been a very late change.if all we're going off of is his battle song, and we assume the fierce pork trooper is the red pigmask and commander, and there is a needle at osohe castle and the commander is someone who gets in the way of the party when trying to pull the needles, it is possible that at some point the fierce pork trooper/red pigmask/commander was going to be a fight at osohe castle to get in the way of the party over the needle.
>>12452550He would've been struck by lightning while in the spring.> i wonder... the gba version didn't just gut certain things. it added stuff too.It did.
>>12452818that could've been what ionia was really doing to lucas behind the black screen. shocking him. or maybe it was just lightning striking him as you say.i feel we never would've gotten one of the best adult jokes in children's games if m3 came out on the n64... it's probably for the best it came out on the gba even in its gutted state.
>>12452576I think there was one thing that could have given that rumor some credence, and that’s the fact that they wheeled out Itoi just because Mother 3 was on the Japanese virtual console. But that’s it, because the dude is 77 years old now and he flat out said that when he’s done with something, he’s truly done and it’s time to leave things alone.
Has Japan's opinion on Mother 3 changed at all? Like has it improved at all with new people playing it or is it still polarizing?
>>12452608>>12452637>>12452730>>12452772The red Pigmask was called the Pigmask Lieutenant and probably just became the Colonel
>>12452836 (me)Also this was the Pork Trooper in the N64 version.
>>12452836that can fit too since the colonels were the highest ranking non boss pigmasks.>>12452839i guess that would have to be the fierce pork trooper since it lines up with its theme being in the chapter 2 files for that section.
thoughts on this magazine picture?it would be something like "hana wa hana da. hana wa ai da" in jp. plus flowers are prominent imagery in mother 3 and love is an important theme.so giving the pigmasks prominent noses/hana to be a play on words with flower/hana was possibly going to be a more important part in mother 3's overall design, aside from the pigmasks just having big noses because they're pig themed.
>>12452839Goddamn, everything was creepier in the N64 version.
>>12452880i know. really makes me wish i could see what n64 porky looked like.the zombies also look like they were reconstructed by the pigmasks in n64 which explains why they got up again. i assume it's a similar thing to what they did to claus in the final game by reviving and reconstructing him.
thinking about the save frogs, frog is kaeru/蛙 and return (usually return to home) is kaeru/帰る. but kearu/帰る can sometimes be used for returning to places other than home like your office. 故郷に帰る/return to office.were frogs chosen as save points because when you load them up you return to a certain point?蛙に帰る/kaeru ni kaeru/return to frog?
>>12452925>故郷に帰るi meant オフィスに帰る
>>12452885Man, I COMPLETELY FORGOT about the creepy cyborg-zombie. Yeah that seems like dropped foreshadowing. I think they must've wanted to change it so that Claus was near-death when he was found, not already dead. The only thing I remember from the final game is that the lady resembled Hinawa, but they didn't really have an explanation like the other Mother games, did they?>>12452537Wasn't more than one timeskip planned at one point?
>>12453002>more than one timeskipwell, the game was going to take place over 10 years or so. maybe there was another timeskip.>claus was near death when foundi don't think it's explicitly stated if he was dead or alive when he was found. i assumed he was dead because the magypsies say he has no heart and everything would be destroyed if he pulled the needles. he doesn't have a heartbeat in battle either like most enemies do when you use the pendulum on them.>hinawaidk about the zombie or why it resembles her. but apparently the twins were originally going to be unaware of her fate and join in the search for her before it had to get shortened to all being revealed in one night.iirc there's something about hinawa being taken by the pigmasks in a magazine too. maybe the characters were going to think she was kidnapped by them at some point or maybe she really was and turned into a chimera or killed and then reconstructed.
so what do you think these battle backgrounds were going to be? were they part of the final boss sequence? how would they have affected the ending?
>>12453018Claus has a few post-timeskip sprites, though they're they're mainly used in the cast roll. I thought it was symbolic, but in retrospect I don't know why bother unless they planned to do more, maybe have him become the masked man in hypothetical second timeskip. In the final, the masked man has noticeably grown to match older-Lucas' height.
>>12453051>In the final, the masked man has noticeably grown to match older-Lucas' height.yeah, that's actually kinda weird if he really did die as a little kid. so maybe he was just near death when he was found. not quite dead. not quite alive.>Claus has a few post-timeskip spriteshe has a lot of unused pre timeskip sprites too. his role was going to be bigger but they cut a lot of stuff out. like the minecart sequence.also, lucas has a sitting sprite that matches claus' sitting sprite in your picrel.
>>12453051>In the final, the masked man has noticeably grown to match older-Lucas' height.if there was going to be another timeskip still by the time they were finishing up the gba version, wouldn't it then make sense for them to have also made another set of sprites with lucas and claus even older than their first timeskip sprites?
something i also want to entertain, besides the notebook trilogy, mother 3 has star wars influences. the pigmasks' helmets vaguely resemble clone trooper helmets.brownie brown even had a flash game with a darth vader look alike made in the same style they would later use for mother 3. claus is also a masked figure like darth vader who dies after getting injured by lightning. and he has a beam(?) sword. and they both have bodies reliant on machinery.so what if claus' suicide was going to be more like darth vader's death scene? i'm going to assume lucas doesn't know the masked man is claus yet in this scenario but he'll find out after claus strikes himself with lightning (this would be similar to luke finding out vader is his father after getting electrocuted).>lucas: no, why!?>claus: because i am your brother.>lucas: NOOOOOOO!this was probably the ending at some point in development during the gba version's dev time.
>>12453092i suppose it's only fitting then if porky was mother 3's palpatine. both are even grossly old looking.
>>12453002zombie hinawa, that would have hit hard>>12453038there is a old vidoe who puts the unused images on the final battleI think for a guess ist does a good jobhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8_huZmO0aQ
>>12453002all I remember hearing about was a single 10 year timeskip, but it's also been a while, so maybe my memory is fuzzy
>>12453018>well, the game was going to take place over 10 years or so. maybe there was another timeskip.I knew that the initial plan was 12 chapters, but they cut it down to approximately what would be later used for the GBA version after abandoning the 64DD. I always thought the extra chapters were mainly dedicating a chapter each to one of the Needles instead of having most of them be Chapter 7, then I hear there was something before the final first chapter involving the cut Kraken that presumably shows more of the community before the chimera and Pigmasks show up, and all these cut characters like Fuel's mother, and it makes me wonder. It's clear the 64DD ambition was greater in scope. That wiki page sure expanded since the last time I saw it...... You know, I just realized, while the "inexperienced with 3D" thing may be true, the problem is Nintendo putting out these failed addons too. Development was SNESCD-->SNES->64DD->64-->GBA. It's definitely also because they were getting used to these addons and had to whittle things down. Multiple times. Nintendo almost certainly downplays this side of the story to save a little face.
>>12453038My theory for this, was it was the one major thing tieing all three games together: Giygas.M3 most likely is supposed to take place after the "bad future" Buzz Buzz in 2 warned about. Giygas in the anchient past driving everyone insane, followed by the aliens obliterating what was left of civilization. The remaining sane survivors escaped to the Nowhere Islands, protected by magical/natural/earth power/the dragon beneath, followed by the survivors wiping their minds(maybe aided by the magypsies) so they had no dark thoughts remaining that Giygas could psychicly manipulate and drive mad. When Porky escaped at the end of 2, he went to the bad future. His presence returned the ills of man. Greed, suspicion, anger, etc. The islands were becoming like the old world. Claus in particular i feel was going to become something like an avatar for Giygas in the anchient past, someone with a lot of emotional trauma that could be manipulated and pull the needles to wipe out what remains of the Earth-men.
>>12453092>star wars themes>Claus/Lucas>George Lucas
>>12453092One thing I will say is a marked improvement in the final is changing the pigmasks from looking all like "ooga-booga spear-tribesmen" to more of a sci-fi stormtrooper influence. Or it could be that they were supposed to grow technologically to match the growth of the island..
>>12453635I think the idea with the N64 Pigmasks was that their military force is also, in a way, a chimera. You have these medieval soldier looking guys riding around on futuristic hover vehicles and tanks and shit. Hell, pre-Pigmask Tazmily was described as "a strange world you can't quite decipher between the middle ages or the old west," so it's also chimeric, even if not like in a way you'd normally think about. Sorry, ain't too good at analysis stuff, but it's something I have been thinking on
>>12448791>dragon hopperThat was an official release, though.
>>12448745If we don't die in the next 4 years, I expect it to get randomly dropped online sometime in late 2031
>>12453860what makes you say 2031?
>>12453635>>12453676i think those are interesting thoughts.
>>12453565that last part kinda reminds me of a jp theory that states porky in the absolutely safe capsule became "giygas". but it goes that m3 starts a time loop so the giygas in m2 is porky from m3 while in the asc, according to the theory.
i think the cut text questioning if waking the dragon was really for the best would've been interesting. they cut duster's suspicions too. he was originally going to have a part where he was against waking the dragon.but i suppose they probably cut all this when it was decided they wanted the ending to be less ambiguous.
i'm not really sure why they cut this and lucas running towards hinawa either. but i guess maybe they didn't want to take control away from the player. but chapter 6 is basically nothing anyway.i guess they didn't really like having lucas show much enotion post timeskip either. after that he only cries on the gameover screen.
>>12454001Interesting. I could see some similarities between the ASC and the Devils Machine. I think 2 already has a time loop to begin with. The anchient prophecy Buzz Buzz learns of and tells Ness who then goes on to fufill it as it states it how Giygas is defeated, going back in time to stop him, leaving the heroes robotic bodies behind and defeating Giygas in the past is how the anchient prophecy begins.
>>12448494I feel like the game was too big for the system it was made for
>>12453536>Development was SNESCD-->SNES->64DD->64-->GBA.Also GCN was the plan before settling on GBA, though there probably wasn't any work on that version. What a development nightmare.
>>12453990Not him but maybe theres some statute of limitations or something involved.
>>12453154it could've been the unused backgrounds were used for the final battle while the pigmask theme was still the love theme. itoi went over a specific scene again and thought the pigmask theme didn't fit so he wanted a different song for the love theme. probably the final battle scene after adding dialogue and tweaking it.i think the unused claus flashbacks that are like rotted vhs tapes would've played right before he died because the way they end abruptly with a white line that looks like a crt tv turning off.he was going to remember all be went through with lucas one last time before he died. whether or not that still would've been dying in lucas' arms though, idk. he might've died differently at some point in development.
>>12454212so either someone has it and doesn't want to get in trouble for dumping it online. or a dev will dump it once its statute of limitations is over?how do you know how long eb64's statute of limitations is?
>>12454269NTA but my bet's on Reid Young since he seems to know about the underdiscussed SNES version. He's probaby sitting on information he can't share yet becausr it'd get certain people in trouble.
>>12454258for instance, there's an unused sprite of claus blowing up and falling over. it was probably used after you beat him at the vine temple because there's a sprite of him getting carried away afterwards.however, sprites can obviously be used in multiple scenes.his blowing up then falling over sprite might've been used fir the final battle as well. it could go:>claus fires the lightning bolt and he gets hit>takes mortal damage and blows up then falls over>his flashbacks play where he remembers lucas>he shuts offhe might've been portrayed as more robotic at some point instead of "he starts off robotic but becomes more human/pure as he remembers who he is".>>12454281that's interesting then. ty.what is reid young's track record?
>>12454258i also think the flashes of color represent claus' emotions throughout his memories.he literally sees red when lucas shoves him.there's blue after he jumps into the lake. maybe he got sad and thought lucas wasn't coming to join him. and there's green afterwards so maybe that's happiness and he got happy after lucas finally joined him.but there are green flashes appearing at the start and end so they might not mean anything though.or it's like how in mother 2 in magicant the screen changed colors after talking to certain people to show how the mood changed. would explain why jumping into a lake turned the screen blue for claus if the lake affected the overall tone of the memory.
>>12448646>>12448673I think it's pretty interesting that for the early stages of the GBA version they went BACK to the earlier 64 designs. That tells me that the later models weren't final either, or possibly that the early models were based on what they were planning for the SNES version.
>>12454405i've seen a screenshot of the gba version with n64 white shirt lucas too at some point.
>>12454579
>>12454627Oh wow, that must be the "Final Fantasy"-looking pitch that Itoi didn't like. That may be where Kumatora started looking more like the final version, though...the right character sprite that looks like Princess Lenna from Final Fantasy V...I really wish we knew more about the SNES version, we know the earliest version was built on top of yhe Mother 2 engine so I have this image in my head that it doesn't look too far off from the final, except the GBA team was only mentioned having N64 reference materials..
>>12454725>the "Final Fantasy"-looking pitch that Itoi didn't like.do you know which interview that's from?
>claus has a sprite of him lying unconscious without shoes onwhy did they make a sprite of him lying down with shoes on and use that in the final version then if he lost his shoes in/before the fight with the mecha drago?
comfy thread too. it's been nice, anons.
>>12454820oh yeah, I forgot since I'm not on this board a lot, threads don't last that long here. Yeah, it's been nice. Hope to see more EB64 talk soon, and here's to wishing those who're searching some good luck, yeah?
Making a guess at the sprites here,>>12448673from left-to-right: Lucas? (has a resemblance to GBA concept art but with Flint-matching hat & vest instead of poncho), Flint, Ionia (had a more active role as a counter to Yokuba earlier in development), Duster.>>12454627It's blurry and looks rougher, but the right is likely Kumatora. I want to say the other two are the twins but their heights wouldn't be different unless this was just a multiple-choice art direction proof-of-concept. Top might be a very early Hinawa since it seems to resemble Carol from the first Mother, which would leave the bottom as Lucas or Claus based on the later 64 model. OR maybe early Nana (top) and Fuel (bottom) since they had bigger roles and somewhat look like their final GBA designs. Alternately, the right might be Hinawa or the cut Tobacco character, hard to tell...
>>12455560>from left-to-right: Lucas?Correction, Claus, going by the GBA concept-art hair color: >>12448646>>12454817Maybe at one point, when he dressed himself more after his father, he dropped his hat? There's apparently a bunch of things they were still changing up to release, like the Pig Masks torching an old forest map or who was present at the pivotal campfire scene.
>>12455560>IonaNah, that's the other twin. If you look closely, they're palette swaps save for the hat. The hatless one's hair style is also closest to the final Claus, so the hatted one should be Lucas.>>12455575>Maybe at one point, when he dressed himself more after his father, he dropped his hat?Could be, but Lucas still had the lighter hair in the concept while Claus had the darker hair. But they probably both had hats and this was just a pixel art test.>>12448673Also, that rock-looking thing that resembles Mr. Saturn with a leaf on its head instead of a bow? Looks like the GBA implementation of Mr. Yottore (よっとれさん), the game's new Saturn-esque creature ala Tenda. Seems they got far enough to be considered for the GBA version instead of dropped during N64.
IDK if EB64 would have been better than M3, but it's a damn shame we lost the Benimaru Itoh art direction
>>12456090I'm surprised he didn't get a Special Thanks at least, but that's Japanese credits for you.I don't personally think the 3D translated his art the best, though. Maybe if they transferred to GameCube instead...
>>12455575>There's apparently a bunch of things they were still changing up to release,The MOTHER 3 Love Theme supposedly slipped through the game at the eleventh hour (before it was the "sad" version of the pork theme that's unused). I can't really picture the game without it.
>>12456209sometimes some of the most iconic things come at the final hour. It's like how Final Fantasy's Prelude theme was also a last minute addition, and apparently made in 10 minutes too (dunno the specifics on that part, so take it with a grain of salt)
>>12453154there's another version to meant to be more like the n64 concept with no dialogue.https://youtu.be/bAboOpX1ie0?t=301also thishttps://youtu.be/fC6GGLWfDEU
>>12455575>There's apparently a bunch of things they were still changing up to release, like the Pig Masks torching an old forest mapi assume the world was going to be in a much more messed up state before pulling the final needle and pulling it was supposed to feel like a last resort similar to boarding the white ship.as is in the gba version, it doesn't really feel like the world is unsalvageable.they don't really give a reason why the last needle needs to be pulled. all threats like porky and the masked man were dealt with. locria/fassad too. why did we need to pull the final needle? it's not like anyone evil can even learn how to use pk powers anymore with the magypsies gone and then pull the last needle.the world was probably supposed to be more fucked up and already on the verge of some type of apocalypse.
>>12456594everyone is brainwashed by porky though its unclear if it would wear off with porky gone.presumably, pulling the needle gives a chance of starting over without porky's corruption ruining everyone, and this corruption will inevitably lead everyone to ruin.but even pulling the needle giving a new start, it's likely someone like porky would just show up again and ruin everything. itoi said porky was very human and represented humanity. he leads the way to his own downfall. it's likely the human nature of corruption that's in everyone will just lead to the death of the new world anyway.but i think the main point is to keep enduring and keep going anyway. no matter how fucked things get.
it could've been that the destroyed buildings that seemed like onett were porky's empire. new pork city might've been a recreation of onett since he was obsessed with the past.
>>12448494Not really. I prefer 2D over 3D and the gba graphics have charm to them.>>12448745I believe it. We got a rom of Bio Force Ape and that seemed so unlikely that a lot of people thought it was just an april fools prank.
be honest, how did you react to mother 3's ending?
>>12456936Was already spoiled by the internet. I understand it moves a lot of people, but it doesn't do much for me
>>12457168i can see how that might wreck it. or maybe it just isn't that moving for you period.i didn't cry myself, but it always fills me with a melancholic kind of emptiness.one of the fanmade animations did make me cry though.
>>12457256Yeah, it doesn't move me much, but it does leave me feeling a little bit melancholic. Like an "Aw man" kinda level of melancholic. What's the fan-animation, by the way?
>>12457301>fan-animationhttps://youtu.be/opJp7L8JxwQ?t=303specifically the flashback part. overall, it's rough but the interpretation of the flashback got me when i watched it.if you're curious about this kind of thing in general, the sarah c animation is probably the best overall fanimation of the final battle.
>>12448494Mothersisters...
>>12448494I wish N64 had more games in general, so I definitely wish we got Earthbound 64.
>>12456721>the gba graphics have charm to them.i agree. i think the final gba looks the best out of all the different looks mother 3 has had.but i think mother 3 is too short once it starts getting good. it only really gets fun at chapter 5.everything prior is a setup for the rest of game's story.and the game is only 20ish hours long. it's too short and the first 5ish hours are slow story setup chapters. the n64 version would've likely been longer and fixed my biggest problem with mother 3.also, the dungeons are too small.>>12456576i've realized there's a short storyline within the unused flashback cutscenes.the swimming in the river one possibly connects to the unused attract mode where they do the same thing but it's slightly different.either that difference tells a story or the unused flashback is just a later/earlier version of the unused attract mode scene.
>>12452550>Whenever a human being develops or learns a new ability, the body really takes a beating>Lucas' body took a "beating" in that hotsprings
>>12457913Got reminded of this from your statement
>>12458050>Lucas learns the power of love from an old guy/girl thing in a hotsprings
The only reason I want an official localization for Mother 3 is to see how people react to the hotsprings scene. Maybe the mushroom trip too. And the oxygen machines. Maybe the ending where a mother urges her kid to kill himself as well. And the animal abuse. And the nazi salutes.
>>12458094>And the animal abuse. And the nazi salutes.Only bad guys do this so who care?
>>12458096I assume some people would be weird about it. At least Peta would freak out over the animal abuse. They always have over that sort of thing in games.
i want to do something special for m3's 20th anniversary. anyone else?
>>12458124Hopefully Itoi will.
>>12458094>how people react to the hotsprings scene"Stunning and brave, another win for transgender 30-somethings and their unstoppable love towards little boys."
>>12458147I personally headcanon that everyone was revived after waking up the dragon and the person who Lucas spent his life with was Ionia. They had a special connection after all.
how did porky get dr. andonuts to the nowhere islands anyway? i thought living beings weren't supposed to time travel. isn't that why porky's body got messed up? how is dr. andonuts fine? or did he not time travel? or is he just not displaying the repercussions yet?
>>12458094And Duster's father being an abusive pos. And Lucas' becoming distant and neglectful because of Claus.>And the nazi salutes.Would be funny if it's been censored in all these rereleases of games like Final Fantasy VI and Mega Man X4 and here comes MOTHER 3 with its PIGS
>>12458210>And Duster's father being an abusive pos.Yeah, it really doesn't help that he's crippled either.>And Lucas' becoming distant and neglectful because of Claus. We could get another wave of people saying Flint is a bad father and abandoned Lucas.>Would be funny if it's been censored in all these rereleases of games like Final Fantasy VI and Mega Man X4 and here comes MOTHER 3 with its PIGSHell yeah, nazi PIGS for the win.
>>12458196Probably would've been explained more in EB64.
>>12458094you'd probably see lots of porky/trump comparisons too and things like it being anti capitalist.
>>12458210Lucas is getting cut next smash game.
>>12458210>And Lucas' becoming distant and neglectful because of Claus.I wonder if that subtext was always present given he was supposed to be playable post-timeskip. That's probably why the final only had him playable in Chapter 1, come think of it.Why did people expect this game to come to the west back then again?
>>12458210 >>12458231>And Lucas' becoming distant and neglectful because of Claus.i think it's a clever usage of the silent protagonist trope. m2 had ness ignoring porky because he's a silent protagonist.m3 has lucas becoming more withdrawn because of losing hinawa and claus. he was forced to grow up so he became quiet. but i also think he was always kinda shy.everyone you play as in mother 3 has a reason to be silent too.>flint is a strong silent father>salsa is a monkey>duster is a traumatized "idiot" and also a thief so yeah he'll keep his mouth shut>lucas is shy and traumatized>I wonder if that subtext was always present given he was supposed to be playable post-timeskip. another reason why we need to see eb64's script.but even assuming flint was still in the party post timeskip, i don't think much dialogue changed. kumatora was given his line where he asks "is that..." when seeing the masked man while hanging from the ship.>Why did people expect this game to come to the west back then again?it was in english magazines in the west saying it'll release on the n64.
>>12458231>Why did people expect this game to come to the west back then again?and oh, if you're talking about the gba release timeframe around 2006, it's because lucas was in smash in 2008. that gave people hope according to documentation videos. i'm not going to pretend i was a part of the community back then or even knew what mother was.
>>12458231back to add one more thing. sorry, last time to this specific post.what makes it funny is how lucas is mean to his dad after it's revealed he's bald and he gets angry and says lucas shouldn't talk to him that way. that lucas has become bitter and when did that happen?i think lucas did get a little bit bitter towards his dad for not spending much time with him.
>>12450367Oh.
porky was supposed to die but i like his fate as is. he wasn't truly defeated. in a weird way he got what he wanted. just in a messed up way.
>>12448673No joke, these designs actually look alot like the Tak and the Power of Juju games on the GBA (underrated desu, i liked them).I'm glad they didn't go with that style
>>12450081>I FOUND PILLS>AND I ATE THEM
>>12459518>I FOUND SHROOMS AND I ATE THEMftfy
but what if all the dead people reincarnated into the new world? they don't come back as is. claus and hinawa don't come back but they reincarnate as new people.it's possible everyone died at the end too and just reincarnated instead of going to the new world as is.
>>12452550>What place would that be? Oh, man, this is getting iffy... (laughs)I love how the interviewer goes "wtf"
>>12448646Different 2003 Mother might have GameCube released
>>12452550>Whenever a human being develops or learns a new ability, the body really takes a beating. I've had this experience myself--whenever I'm feeling sluggish and exhaustedkinda reminds me how in the notebook trilogy the twins strength themselves by beating each other up and insulting each other.i know itoi says the inspiration for learning psi and getting stronger in mother 3 is due to his own experiences but i also wonder if it's partially based on how the twins in the notebook get stronger.
>>12452550God what a pretentious hack this guy is
>>12452550God what an insightful creator this guy is
>>12459071it's fitting that porky never dies. as the antithesis to mother 3's themes, that everything will end someday. even the other immortal characters, the magypsies, think it's beautiful that they'll die. but porky never does. he never moves on. he just stagnates while everyone else moves on and grows older and eventually dies.i like the final decision to keep porky living forever.
>>12460859and the way porky is defeated, through his machine dying, it's perfect.mother 3 is all about nature vs. machines/unnatural human creations like chimeras. his natural biological body outlives his machine as a representation of nature outlasting machinery. but also, because he's defeated through his machine dying, it's like the true battle was against a machine.
>>12460868and within porky's theme is a leitmotif for monkey's delivery service, which also originally had a happier version that was tazmily's theme in the n64 version.tazmily's theme representing the extreme end of people who unify with nature and porky representing the extreme end of people who unify with man made creations. his leitmotif of the once happy tazmily theme sounds more mechanical and much sadder.

what do you think of itoi not directing mother 3? it was directed by nobuyuki inoue. do you think it would've felt more like the other 2 games if itoi had directed it? or is it for the best he didn't since he didn't really have programming knowledge?inoue also also worked on games like the mana series, which is probably why some early designs for claus and lucas seemed more fantasy inspired.>>12448646

>>12458196Pretty sure Porky is using Starmen/alien time travel technology and it doesn't have the same limitations of not being able to transfer biological life, but he personally over used it which fucked him up.Speaking of which, its been a while since i played the gba version, but did that version keep the plot point that Porky was abducting people from across time to bring to New Pork and also convert into Pigmask soldiers? Or did the final version just imply they were all Nowhere Island citizens? I could have swore pre release it was stated Andonuts was not the only person Porky was snatching up from across history and bringing to the future.
>>12458094Nintendo should just release all three in a collection with English options and only sell it in Japan. You cut out 99% of the controversies that way when they can just go "it wasn't sold in your country to begin with".

>>12462980>>12463123that's also assuming that nana wouldn't have snatched him up. let's be real. lucas isn't making the first move on anyone so unless richie liked him too, nothing's happening there. nana said she could like him so she might do something about it.

is the fucked up state of Earthbound's Earth the direct result of George stealing PSI secrets of from aliens or did all that shit basically just happen anyway or as the result of the devs just doing it because they wanted to?
>>12467838in earthbound giygas' influence caused everyone to get shitty.
>>12467878yeah, but part of that predates EB. Like living trucks and ghosts and zombies and shit.
>>12467880i'm not sure then. i assume it probably also has to do with giegue or maria though. why else would a doll in your house randomly attack you and then sing you part of the 8 melodies?
>>12467880but the ghosts and zombies might just be a natural part of earthbound's world. even mother 3 has them even though there's not an outside influence like maria or giegue to fuck with things. unless porky and the pigmasks somehow also caused them. at least for the zombies in m3 they were originally going to be mechanical, so in that case it would've been the pigmasks' doing.
>>12467880those were because of Gyiyg's influence all the same, or Gyiyg and his race.
>>12467910>>12467904>>12467898see, that's what I'm wondering. By the time M1 takes place, George had been back on earth for maybe 30-50 years. He came back with all sorts of information of psychic powers and possibly technology from an alien race that could have /somehow/ seeded itself on Earth creating all sorts of strange forces and even creatures. We know certain things in M1 were psychic disturbances directly caused by the invading aliens, namely everything at the zoo. But what about some other stuff? What about some of the weirder 'changes' to the planet we see down the line? The dragons and magypsies of M3, for instance, mirror Mary's Magicant with its dragon and seashell houses of strange beings.
>>12467917I've always been of the mind that Mother 3 takes place in a shared Magicant. Humanity abandoned Earth after destroying it and are now hooked up in a kind of matrix in the "White Ship", which could be a spaceship as hinted at by this painting in the Chimera Lab. The Magypsies and other magical things could be manifestations of humanity's shared consciousness just as they were of Maria's and Ness' in the previous games.
>>12467934why is porky in everyone's magicant?
>>12467934also what does it mean if someone dies in magicant like claus or hinawa? would they still be alive irl?
>>12458094it would be hilarious to me if the mushrooms were censored to coffee to fit with how the alcohol in earthbound was censored to coffee. it's implied that ness and jeff got drunk off coffee in the bar so they should absolutely do the same for lucas and infer he got high off coffee in the forest.

>>12467838technically, it was never specified what exactly George stole from the aliens, just that something was stolen. Everybody just assumes it's PSI. I personally believe it's the plans to make giant ass robots, because how the fuck did that man make EVE in his day and age
>>12468609>technically, it was never specified what exactly George stole from the aliens, just that something was stolen. Everybody just assumes it's PSI.are you sure?
>>12468609Why would it be PSI if Ana has it? Unless...
>>12467934ness also has a needle in his magicant. or it's a tentacle, but it's similar to the needles.
>>12468619Quite sure, my acquaintance. The first image is the line where Giegue/Giygas/Gyiyg/whatever name you call this proto-Mewtwo looking fuck brings up the information George stole (No PSI mentioned) on a website that compares the Japanese original text with both Phil Sandhop and Clyde Mandelyn's translation (https://livvy94.neocities.org/EBBR/Localizations), and the second is me checking the Japanese with machine translation (while definitely rough (I'd get an actual translator if I could), it at least corroborates the lack of mention of PSI being stolen). The third image is a translation of the relevant part of the expanded version seen in the Encyclopedia MOTHER (thank you, Kenisu3000), and the fourth is the website from earlier's text dump of the George and Maria story, and the fifth and sixth images are just me checking with machine translation again (again, I wish I could either understand the language in its' entirety or have the money to hire a translator). So, as you can see, PSI was not mentioned to be stolen. The knowledge of PSI may or may not be what he stole, but if you consider all Mother games to take place in the same reality, then how would those unrelated to George (presumably the Garrickson baby, Ana, Paula, Poo, the Magypsies (who live for around 10,000 years), Kumatora, and Lucas and Claus, as examples) have PSI if they weren't related to him or live in a time where something like his notes would be inaccessable? Sorry about the absolute text dump, but I thought to clarify with what info I had on hand
>>12469323nah, man. that part is okay.ninten's dad tells him his great grandfather was researching psi.
>>12469323>しかし、ひいおじいさんが PSIの けんきゅうを していたはずだ。>but, your great grandfather must've been researching PSI.and yeah, it's unclear how those you mentioned were able to learn psi without having anything to do with george. it's not really elaborated on to the best of my knowledge and it changes on per-game basis.like, ninten has psi because his great grandfather studied it, which somehow gave ninten psi?i mean, george was missing for 80 years so maybe he came in contact with ana's family too as well as the rosemary family, which would also pass on some knowledge of psi.ness was born with psi.lucas, claus, and kumatora had psi sleeping within them and had it woken up by the magypsies. it's also unclear what the magypsies have to do with giegue's people and their psi. and flint was originally going to have psi in the n64 version.
>>12469486...I thought i covered that? Sorry, musta zoned out while talking and kinda got into some kinda headspace. I meant to talk about how his research of PSI may not be entirely related to what he exactly stole. Like how he took knowledge of SOMETHING, but also then studied PSI when he got back to Earth.>>12469504>i mean, george was missing for 80 years so maybe he came in contact with ana's family too as well as the rosemary family, which would also pass on some knowledge of psi.George, according to the story, got abducted along with Maria back in the early 1900s, and a couple years later, he came back and then secluded himself away like a hermit studying PSI. During his lifetime, he also somehow built EVE (whose dialogue explicitly mentions George as her creator) in that underwater lab on Mt. Itoi, and was later buried on the mountain. It's in the big ass image laying out most of this I posted. But we're getting a bit outta hand, this is an EB64 thread, not a "debating Mother 1 shenanigans and how it affects the whole series" thread, haha

>>12469593giegue uses psi. i guess you can say "it isn't explicitly stated what george stole," sure, but it's heavily implied.we also don't know what george did while secluded. his diary is in your basemenr but he built eve in the sea laboratory? he might've visited other locations.
>>12469593i'll elaborate more.it's stated george was deep in some research.>Two years later, George returned home but never told anyone where he had been or what he had done. Instead, he deeply immersed himself in strange research.then your dad says he was researching psi.>your great grandfather must've been researching psiso wouldn't it stand to reason that the research george was engrossed in was the psi research?there's a thread about what george was studying and the game wants you to pick it up.i think you really love mother and like putting time into your theories, but for the above reason, i can't buy into this one. that the research george was conducting wasn't on psi.
Sooooo...How does someone "steal" PSI?
>Be Shigesato Itoi>Your series is popular so it's time to sell some merch...>Put out an official fanart book with Ness' dick and balls showing!>Sell a keychain with Lucas mooning everyone! What did he mean by this?
>>12470115he stole knowledge on how to use it.
what do you think of mother using these simplistic cute graphics? would it be more popular if it was cooler looking or had an anime style or more realistic style instead?
>>12470107...I wasn't trying to say that the research george was conducting wasn't on PSI. What I was trying to say was that what he stole from the aliens was possibly a different thing than the PSI he researched.
I've lost hope in ever seeing a build of this get leaked but I wish we'd at least get some new footage or screenshots. Last time any new content leaked was 4-5 years ago and I don't think there's been anything since then.
>>12470212well, he stole from the aliens, then he was deep in psi research, and then you see giegue has psi.i'm saying i think that's the plot thread you're expected to follow.

>>12470132graphics were at least part of the reason EarthBound initially flopped in the US. The US release was in '95, after all, and stuff like DKC was already out and making waves. So it may have gotten a little more popular if the art style was different, but stuff like the advertising and the higher sales price it had (since it came with a guidebook and everything) were the bigger causes of EB's downfall. That, and RPGs weren't quite so popular around this time. That'd have to wait until around the late 90s, around FFVII's release, with its' monstrous advertising budget Sony was using to promote the game and what not

>>12456594>>12456635the heroes' actions are meant to be morally gray. lucas pulls the needle to maybe make a better world but it also does cause mass suffering for everyone on the islands. you watch the chimeras suffer too as everything is destroyed. there was also no knowing if pulling the needles even would've made a better world. as the end text says, you were risking everything by having lucas pull that final needle. but... he had to do it. i guess it was the only way he thought forward.
>>12473383and even if everyone did survive, we don't even know if the world was better. only that it was recreated. knowing itoi's philosophy that everything will end but it's nice knowing that, it's safe to assume the world you did end up making in mother 3 will still end anyway. it's a cycle. until the final ending anyway.

thoughts on the voice acting for lucas and claus?i can't be too picky about this and i think lani minella did this for free too so can't be mad, but i think lucas sounds weird. she gives him this slight lisp when none of his lines in smash have a lisp.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XJzxOLAf5aY

>>12475428>what's your favorite, anon? That, I'm still searching for, if you mean what I think you mean of "voices for Lucas." the gag about lucas not being allowed in club tittyboo for being underage feels like an afterthought. it's the only time any gives his age a second thought.no one cares if he goes to work while young. no one inside club tittyboo cares that he's young aside from the pork trooper and there's even someone who knows lucas inside the club and he doesn't think twice about lucas' age in the context of him being there. he just offers lucas a soda.there's a tazmily villager around lucas' age/height who goes to work and then club tittyboo after work, or so he says.i think this is due to lucas being older post timeskip in the n64 version. i assume this gag didn't exist in the n64 version.i kinda like the feeling the apathy gives like it's a normal thing there's a kid working and going to an adult club. because at this point lucas' role in life is no different from an adult's. and all his party members are adults (and a dog) but lucas fits right in because he's basically an adult at that point.>>12475560i just meant "could you elaborate more on what you mean?"and yeah, lucas doesn't have a lisp in smash. but i guess he only has a few lines. but if he had a lisp and that was the intended direction, the snash team probably would've asked that his smash lines have a lisp on the few he does have.
i think the OOT great fairies have a similar feel to the magypsies. i always thought the great fairies were off putting for various reasons but i always thought the faces were somewhat masculine. idk if that was the intention though.anyways, iirc a mother 3 n64 magazine said something like the magypsies knew magic or fortune telling and they could teach magic or something. so there's these pink haired characters who teach magic and they live outside of civilization and they aren't human.
>>12475840This is what Ionia looked like apparently.
