Slow burn bone chilling JRPG kinoThe game's visuals actually aged a lot better than any Square JRPG from this era
Don't be retarded
>>12453056>Jittery barely make out able characters with insane slow motion combat You should have posted Vagrant Story instead But there's a reason they used DQ7's style for 14 years or so after it came out.It was the original HD-2D
>>12453056>posts the worse ps1 ff
>>12453056I like how camera angles mattered so much more in the prerendered background era. It is an entire art form in its own.
>>12452959Is this the one that has 100 hours of gameplay?
DQ7 would have fit perctly in the Saturn's library
>>12453614Yeah it was pretty fucking underwhelming for the ps1, barely any 3d at all
>>12453620It has about the normal amount of 3D, the problem is that it has tiny and barely animated spritesThey look like they belong on a early SNES game, it makes the game look as if it was halfway stuck between the previous and current generation.
>>12453589Most of that's spent grinding on job training and collectathon side quests. Subtract that and it's not much longer than the already-lengthy DQ6. Heartbeat really went for the "quantity over quality" approach.
>>12453614Not really, DQ7 is a video game people remember, and like so it would stick out. Saturn has nothing else like it.
>>12453672>it makes the game look as if it was halfway stuck between the previous and current generation.Exactly saturn games
>>12453614>>12453620it looks like 96-97 PS1 RPG, definitley outdated by the year 2000
okay I need to know before starting this: is it a slow burn because it slowly tells one long story or because it has a bunch of filler episode crap?
>>12453727both. and the grinding is also slow
>>12453727The latter.
>>12453727it's filler episode crap: the game. The overarching story is barely there at all and the typical generic DQ shit.
>>12453727It's a bunch of mini-rpgs that somewhat connect at the end. But each island is it's own little story. DQ7 is for hardcore DQ fans only. Casual enjoyers will not like it.
>>12452959the visuals are dog shit, you'd be hard pressed to find any ps1 rpg that looks worse. Play more games
>>12453778FF7
>>12453786Ill take expressive lego characters, beautiful backgrounds, and well made battle models over wooden SNES-era sprites over boring, shitty 3d any day.
>>12453620There's more polygons in dq7 than there is in any ff game on the ps1.
>>12453802All wasted on boring shit like rocks and doors instead of the fucking characters and monsters
>>12453803I don't really care what you think of it, you were still wrong.
>>12453687Saturn has a lot of memorable RPGs thugheverbait
Why did DQ7 give up of having sprite animation?DQ6 had some unique frames here and there, DQ7 stepped down instead.
>>12453802>more polygons means betteryou belong in /v/, even ignoring the fact that you're almost definitely wrong anyway. I highly doubt those bare minimum effort backgrounds in dq7 amount to more polygons than every character, npc and enemy model in FFIX.
>>12453864DQ6 just looks so much better than 7 all around. And I'd argue 3 SNES looks better than both of them.
>>12453767welp. I played a non vr DQ game that everyone praises constantly and it's just side content. Went back and beat 1 and 2 recently and fell in love with them. It's sad to think the series eventually devolves into this crap.
>>12453915if you loved 1 and 2 then 3 is going to absolutely blow your fucking cock. play it NOW (NES for most balanced gameplay, GBA for most content, SNES for best presentation. Ive played all 3 and like the SNES the most easily but you cant go wrong with any)
>>12453915>it's just side contentWhich one? DQ9?That's not the norm from what I perceive.
>>12453919*GBC, not GBA.
>>12453864Enix demanded 3D graphics and Heartbeat didn't know shit about making them.
>>12453920It was 11. Without saying too much I just hated how the story started neat and then completely vanished in favor of anime filler episodes. >>12453919I did start 3 and bumble around for a bit to test it. When I give it a real shot I've got to figure out my team I want. I really like the idea of a merchant class. That was neat.
>>12454365>It was 11You either stopped playing halfway through the first act, or you're straight-up shitposting.Half of DQ11 is dealing with the aftermath of your encounter with Mordegon, and even in the postgame he's still a major aspect of the game. I don't know how you saw this as "just side content".You would not survive DQ7.
>>12454365>>12454409no he's right, XI is trash. Even VII is better.
>>12454519Sure thing buddy, that's why the DQ7 remakes are always putting a huge emphasis on how they're trying to fix how shitty the game is.
>>12453836Name one Saturn game that anyone has heard of that isn't just Panzer Dragoon again. You can't! For that matter, name 5 Sega console exclusive games. They're shovelware console makers.
>>12454626>anyone has heard ofNot sure what you mean by this but anyway Saturn has Shining Force III which is at least on par with the very best PS1 has to offer. In fact... I think PS1's RPG output is fine but often overrated, especially the Final Fantasy numbered entries.>5 sega exclusivesSakura WarsDragon ForceShining WisdomShinobi XNightsKeep seething about not owning a Sega Saturn
>>12454632>Saturn has Shining Force III which is at least on par with the very best PS1 has to offer.Hahaha those games are super easy (no permadeath lmao) and lack depthsFF tactics is much harder, much deeper and the story is miles better
>>12453727"filler episode crap" is the lifeblood of Dragon Quest.
>>12454632>Shining Force III which is at least on par with the very best PS1 has to offer.it's good but let's not get fucking delusional here.
>>12454852>FF tactics is much harder, much deeper and the story is miles betterYeah but no. FFT's balance is a complete mess, unlike FFT SF3 doesn't want you to grind until the very end game and there is a limit to your grinding (at some point you stop gaining exp unless you start fighting stronger opponents) while FFT requires you to grind at several points in the story and you can keep easily build exp and skill points for as long as you want to. SF3 has a perfect balance as is and if you want to you can switch to harder difficulties at any time so it's potentially a lot harder than FFT.As for permadeath, what's going to happen if someone dies in FFT? You'll revive him within 3 turns and he'll go on fighting in the same fight. In SF3 you at least have to wait for the next church to revive him and he won't gain exp in the maintime. SF3 also has several points where you can lose/not gain a character permanently if you fuck up in a combat.FFT's story is a convoluted pretentious mess for angsty teens, while SF3's story is more fairy tale like and as a result more universal.SF3 also looks better, sounds better, and the RPG elements are more involved with towns being more than menus.FFT's only strength is all the busy work and the fact that the player is given tons of mechanics to discover and play with, which is typical PSX-era RPG bullshit (terrible balance but hey look at all the toys!). It doesn't hold a candle to something like Vandal Hearts.
>>12455224It really is though. Better than FFT
>>12455505Shining force is baby first tactical Problably the easiest tactical i have ever played
>>12455241>SF3 also has several points where you can lose/not gain a character permanently if you fuck up in a combat.Yeah like 99% of tactical RPG
>>12455514You haven't played it
No one would give a fuck about FFT if it didn't had thr words Final Fantasy on the title
>>12455527>No one would give a fuck about a Matsuno game the father of Tactics ogre!!!
>>12455556Yes, notice how no one gives a crap about Tactics Ogre, they only care about FFT
>>12455524>You haven't played itNow show me your FFT copy/rom
>shitting force
>>12455562Show us your play times.
>>12455562Nice jpegs!
PlayStation fanboys, as always, doing a spectacle
>>12454632>Nightstop tier bait reply. Nobody has heard of any of this shit btw.
>>12455749The Nights hate is a modern meme. You weren't there back then.Your existence itself is bait.
>>12455756>You had to be thereYou didn't have to be there for OoT or FF7 or DOOM, those games just hold up and aren't dependent on being present and buying it in a very specific time. Hint, if you have to do that for a game to.hold water, it doesn't stand on its own merit (because, presumably, it has none)
>>12455765There's many people like you hating on games. Midwits hate on "bing bing" nintendo games, "weeb" games like ff7, or "boomer shooters" like doom. You hating on Nights isn't different from those meme mindsets
>>12455749>Nobody has heard of any of this shit btw.Everybody who is into vidya beyond a surface level has heard of Sakura Wars.
>>12453727You know those little mini-episodes of sorts that you do early on in a lot of Dragon Quest games? It's kinda cute and charming in a way, right?Imagine an entire fucking game of that, but the charm wears off when you quickly realize>This is the entire fucking game
>>12456357so it's like if an semi-episodic anime was a game, more or less
>>12456381>semiHaha. No.
Dragon Quest have always been superior to Final Fantasy Traditional JRPGs they will always be better than modern and experimental JRPGs like Final Fantasy the franchise Final Fantasy is almost entirely a Western franchise Dragon Quest is more Japanese Dragon Quest stories are more Optimistic Final Fantasy is more Emo
>>12456402Oh well.
>>12456357>can't appreciate kino
Why yes, I did enjoy getting teased and bullied by Maribel for a hundred hours. How could you tell?
>>12455629Self report
>>12453056Literally the worst FF on the PS1, and easily one of the worst square rpgs on it
>>12460879Still better than DQ7
being able to hit square at anytime and have the area zoom out while still being fully rotatable is fucking awesome
>>12452959How's the remake?
>>124632873ds is the best version of the gameReimagened is a mess that takes out content
>>12453056talking to the mirror again eh, mark
>>12452959The last truly old-school Dragon Quest game, before the Square-Enix merger pushed DQ8 to be more normie-friendly.
>>12464845Pretentious post.Dragon Quest was conceived as a normie-friendly series. It used Wizardry and Ultima as a basis and simplified the hell out of it in order to make it approachable by anyone.
>>12465053And even then Americans complained DQ was too archaic and difficult.
>>12465125B-but Ultima and Wizardry
>>12467148If even Dragon Quest was considered too difficult for the average Western to comprehend despite being so dumbed down compared to Ultima and Wizardry, that says more about the players than the games.
>>12467442It's not always about 'comprehension'. Players may still find a game tedious and frustrating even if they understand it.Either way, the main point I wanted to make is that Ultima and Wizardry had a primary niche audience of young adult computer nerds. Dragon Quest targets the 10+ year old console demo.
>>12467687Meanwhile Japanese console kids were smart enough to understand it
>>12452959War and Peace: The Video Game
>>12452959>hours before you even fight a slime
>>12471481and its the best part of the game
>>12453919I want a romhack of the SNES version with the balance of the original and all the extra content from the GBC version
You guys DID play all the Dragon Quest games in release order, correct?
>>12453919I’m playing through NES DQ iii and it started off great, but it’s become a slog ever since the orb hunt started. At least in FF I you have an in-game map and the airship by this point. In this game I’m just floating through the sea fighting pointless encounter after pointless encounter, wandering onto any landmass I see, realize I’ve already been there, walk back to the boat, fighting more encounters, and goddamn this game feels like it should have ended by now. This would be fine if the game was punishing, but it’s not, I haven’t game over’d yet. The Day/night cycle is also stupid and pointless. Really not seeing how this is the best RPG on the system. I’ve been putting pff finishing it and going through my shmup collection in the meantime. Does it get any better?
>>12463291Playing the 3ds version now. Am I missing anything from the original?
I just beat Maeve. I'm guessing every island is going to be a little adventure like this
I actually like the idea of the game, being sort of like old fantasy show with episodic stucture, hercules and xena like stuff. Wish it looked better though.
>>12473250The first Dungeon having more annoying puzzles and that's it
>>12473250Nothing on the level of the recent "Reimagined" version, just some small cuts in places. The biggest cut is getting through the shrine at the start and reaching your first Slime battle.
>>12473430Yeah it was nice to hit that about an hour in instead of walking back and forth back and forth back and forth. The 3ds seems to let me move much faster so that is also nice
>>12473367Yeah the rainbow mine was pretty straight forward
