The PlayStation can produce mind-boggling effects
Well at least it's not 2 player FF8
>>12454885That scene ruined Charlie's angels for me.
And all video games must only use the sound effects from atari 2600 pac man and/or donkey kong.

Why do so many tv shows and movies do this? Why do they never have a character just playing an actual game instead of some custom made CG crap for the shot, and why do they treat videogames like some sort of bizarre alien concept?
>>12457968licensing probably
>>12457970There's that, but it's also repeatability and keeping your actor in the zone. You might have to shoot that fucking scene 20+ times if shit keeps going wrong, and you need the sound effects to line up properly so it doesn't interfere with dialogue or distract the viewer at the wrong moment, and you want the scene on the screen to be the correct level of interesting for what you're going for too, to pull the viewers eyes across the scene the right way. Making movies is hard, and "hey, steve, play this video game while you're acting" is just asking for more trouble.
>>12457968Licensing, consistency, the actor doesn't actually have to play and can focus on their lines because it would look weird if the player character was just standing around, would also be distracting if the character kept dying or the same menus kept popping up, the playstation might not actually work, the tv might not even work either and the the video is being added to the scene digitally, it takes time to setup a game system, games cost extra money, have to get to a point in the game where it's easy to film around it, it could date the show of a game being played came out after the time the movie is set in.It's just easier, cheaper and faster to throw a prop game system up(might even be a broken one you got free), hide the cables and throw on some stock video. Crts were hard to film too so I wouldn't be surprised if they just cover the tvs in green or blue tape then chroma keyed a video in.
>>12457968Boomer writers who only ever played Pac-Man 40 years ago.>some teenager character is clearly playing Xbox 360>Atari 2600 beep boop sounds
>>12457990>>12457979they can just make an animes like dotHackSign and SAO.
>>12457968In some cases I have to wonder if it's intentional. Take for instance Beethoven, where Rice and Ted are playing SMB3 as if it were a 2 player co-op thing (and not just inferring by the fact that both are using controllers, but if memory serves, they make it explicit by having one of them call dibs on the leaf), with Ted using a fucking Power Glove. Somebody involved in filming the footage clearly knew how to play SMB3, with the gameplay taking place in World 5 and Mario having 30 lives, instead of them just aimlessly dicking around in 1-1 or the map screen like you'd expect from a throwaway "kids and their videogames" scene in a family comedy.Granted, I kinda doubt that somebody working on a film ~34 years ago would have gotten enough of a kick out of seeing unrealistic depictions of videogames from out of touch middle aged writers/propmasters/whatevers to joke about it by going comically over the top with wrongness in their own production, but you never know.
>>12458431>Granted, I kinda doubt that somebody working on a film ~34 years ago would have gotten enough of a kick out of seeing unrealistic depictions of videogames from out of touch middle aged writers/propmasters/whatevers to joke about it by going comically over the top with wrongness in their own production, but you never know. It's apart by like ten years and the culture changed, but, Robin Williams was a fan of Evangelion and basically did something like that by butchering the show for one scene in one movie he did
>>12458431>In some cases I have to wonder if it's intentionalNo, it's because movies and TV shows are made by large collaborative groups that all have different areas of knowledge and expertise. The guy who assembles the set is different from the guy who gets the props is different from the girl who picks their outfits is different from the girl who chooses who the actors are is different from the guy who writes the script is different from the guy doing the sound foley is different from the guy planning the stage direction is different from the guy running the camera is different from the marketing and fundraising people is different from the guy directing the whole entire thing and trying to achieve a particular vision. that last in guy particular probably doesn't know anything about video games and just know he wants two kids in the scene. It's not just video games, it's the same for every single domain of information, skill, talent, entertainment. The group as a whole is not concerned with accurately reproducing a given niche unless they are explicitly banking on that as a marketing gimmick. They are only creating a production that the average person looking at the screen can watch and "get" what's happening.>>12458627Robin Williams was a comedian and known prankster. I guarantee you most of these people would not have wasted a second thought on some fat neckbeard complaining "but ummmm super mario 3 isnt like that".
>>12458379Good one
>>12455638This wouldn't be a problem if he played something better than Sonic. But it's the best Segafags have.
>>12457997Writers =/= Sound designers
>>12455638It looks like he's playing on a genesis, but why is there border around the screen? Is that from the tv itself?
I think the only time a game was accurately portrayed was in 40 year old virgin where they play MK Deception

>>12462491Already looked that up but could only find failed movie adaptation of the game. Also your own little smart ass show did not give the answer either.
>>12462503use duckduckgo
>>12457968Copyright bullshit initially, then lazyness and unoriginality, I mean how many fucking times they used the defacto Atari Pacman sounds? Even when showing an early proto of SFII on Sega Genesis on some UK show? The later equivalent would be making their own knockoff version of social media like MySpace or Facebook but they end up just changing the names a little, it's just pathetically desperate.
>>12462541t. has never made anything more difficult than a seethepost, and so thinks it's all very simple and easy to do
>>12457968Another reason is some movies used custom modded 48Hz video players so they could shoot at any shutter angle without roll bars. Nobody sold modded 48Hz game consoles.
>>12457968Unironically the Big Bang Theory of all shows actually got it right.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETNiMHxu8xwHe's playing Mario 64 on his laptop, "on a poorly coded Nintendo 64 emulator" in his words, and the sound actually is the sound from the game. And when he presses the enter button to pause the game, as one does, you hear the pause sound.Much better than the other Chuck Lorre show, Two and a Half Men, where Jake goes to the store to buy "the new Final Fantasy" and when he gets it you can clearly see it's the Greatest Hits version of Final Fantasy X and then for god knows what reason the music when he plays it is from FF2.
>>12454876She was so fucking hot in this but goddamn her character was a bitch
homor get gameboy
>>12462076the footage was ripped from a youtube video
>>12462076My bet is that they ripped the video from one of the seven billion "Sega Genesis Classics Collection containing the same 5 games" that Sega has released over the years, hence the border. The editor who added the video in-post and the prop guys on set who brought in a Genesis arcade stick probably weren't in talks with each other.

>>12464786It is?
I think the most "mind-boggling" effect The Playstation produced was when Psycho Mantis moved the player's controller with his mind. Bummer everybody who played it without a DualShock missed that.
>>12466935Funny thing with Psycho Mantis is that it was such a formative moment to so many people that they posted about it everywhere and by the time I actually played it myself I'd had that part of the game spoiled so many times that it wasn't special for me. Not that it would have mattered, I suppose, since I played it on PC.
