What do you think of the more retro portrayals of Mario before he got lobotomized into incomprehensible bing bing woo-hoo man? Why did this more normal Marios fail to stay relevant and the maniac Mario didn't?
>>12457716Easy to digest for normies, most normal working people don't like characters that have structure and take time to understand.
could have had something to do with him having varying amounts of digits
>>12457716>Why did this more normal Marios fail to stay relevant and the maniac Mario didn't?You mean like how they went back to Mario being a normal guy from Brooklyn in the movie?
I'm just biased because I grew up with it but I feel like the fat plumber Mario is way more enduring and memorable than the current evergreen perfect Mario. Nintendo could redesign Mario tomorow and nobody would care but people are still going to be making Super Show youtube poops long after Miyamoto dies.
>>12457716I definitely prefer the slightly gruff DiC version of Mario. Probably part of the change is that the more one dimensional LET'S-A-GO Mario works fine in the games themselves. It also aligns better with Miyahon's insistence that Mario is a young guy, whereas the DiC/CDi Mario comes across as a guy in his 40s (which was presumably the intent, given how his live action counterpart and VA was indeed a guy in his 50s, and Luigi's a guy in his late 40s).
>>12457830>Miyahonschizo post, opinion discarted.
>>12457716None of these designs look good - they are all ugly to look at. So, of course, none of them would have staying power. It's not that complicated.
>>12457716old mario had too much character, if a major company is going to have a mascot they have to be a sterilized Mickey Mouse type thing who barely talks at all
I didn't immediately dislike Martinet's Mario, but there was still enough bass in the performance back in Mario 64/Mario Kart 64. After that it was like he got hit in the balls and the falsetto went through the roof starting with the Gamecube.
>>12457716Super Show and Mario 3 cartoon personalities made more sense for a guy from Brooklyn. A blue collar Italian guy from Brooklyn should look and sound more like Carl from Aqua Teen hunger Force and have a personality like half of Jo Pesci roles where he's an angry little guy that picks fights with everyone twice his size. Wahoo guy doesn't really mix well with the Brooklyn origin. If he was just some blue collar guy from a weird magical world that happens to have talking mushrooms and turtles then I guess so. He's not really as interesting though.
>>12457716People shitting on old Super Mario cartoons is such a youtube bandwagon meme, I still like them the same as ever.
>Hey paisanos!
>>12457716It's Charles Martinet's fault. Nintendo wanted him to voice Mario in the traditional Brooklyn-Italian voice, but he refused. Nintendo liked the Euro-Italian interpretation and just went with it.>The directors let him and gave the description of "an Italian plumber from Brooklyn". At first Martinet planned to talk like a stereotypical Italian American with a deep, raspy voice. He then thought to himself that it would be too harsh for children to hear, so he made it more soft-hearted and friendly, resulting in what Mario's voice is today.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Martinet#Voice_acting_in_the_Mario_franchiseIn an alternate universe, someone other than Martinet was hired for Mario, and Super Mario 64 would start up with a voice clip of "EYYY, IT'S MAWRIO TIME!!!" instead.
Captain Lou is the REAL Mario, and I will not hear otherwise.
>>12457716Mario is at its best when Nintendo allowed their developers and third-party associates to get weird with the character. Even the worst of cases like Hotel Mario are much more memorable than the Super Mario Bros. Movie by Illumination.Hell, even some of the new games have less visual appeal than it.
>>12457716Never liked the show but I still prefer the Brooklyn Italian guy over the Chef Boy-Ar-Dee Italian.
>>12457875He did not change the voice for initiative. According to an interview, the casting guy told him that it was too harsh for children to hear.
>>12457716I'm either or with Mario. Never cared as much, but I do think the video game voice is annoying. But the 90s cartoon King Koopa is way more fun than Bowser. I love his whole proud to be a cartoon villain and likes being mean evil and sneaky as much as possible thing.
>>12457896He looks nothing like Bowser
>>12457896Has there even been an SMB Super Show alt color vesion of him in Smash Bros or something? That'd be cool.
>>12457915Only in fan mods, the only time anything Japanese acknowledged him is one Mario manga that had him show up and everyone threw rocks at him (and American Wendy) for being so ugly.
>>12457923Figures.
>>12457896DiC King Koopa is kind of a mix of Bowser and Wart. It's weird in hindsight, but at the time that was probably the best direction to take him.
>>12457923What did American Wendy look like the page before?
>>12457938
>>12457941Oh no, no blackface lips
they have more heart to them than the modern mario. nintendo would, of course, much rather have him be a flat cardboard mounted on a roomba with a crusty speaker taped to it nowadays...
>>12457830Live action Luigi looks way older than live action Mario
>>12457716Middle age blue collar Mario is best. I don't get how Miyamutoid wanted him to appeal to young man as an older working class hero to look up to, then decide to make him whimsical ass Mickey mouse.
>>12458083I don't think he was ever supposed to be some old man blue collar working class hero, that seems to be more of an American thing
>>12458086Pretty sure that is what Moto said in interviews in the early days, or something along those lines. He wanted someone not kids, but teens/young men could look up to.
I can't believe Mario used to be racist...
>>12458086It would be interesting to hear what kids around the world assumed about Mario's age from the games themselves. Honestly I don't know if I ever really thought about it, but seeing Captain Lou and Bob Hoskins portraying Mario didn't surprise me at all, not once did I think "why does Mario look so old? I thought he was young!" Even though he was drawn in a cutesy style, I guess I just assumed that a tubby mustachioed man in workpants would be about the same age as my dad.
>>12458768I have always thought mid 30's, 20's too young for someone with a mustache, 40 and 50 too old for someone being that acrobatic and hype
Maybe Dobson had a point desu
>>12457839Mario isn't exactly a sexy handsome man and he certainly wasn't in the official art all of these cartoons had to work with
>>12457716>calling newer portrayals of mario lobotomized>bring up hotel marioLolLmao evenAlso if you are referring to the games it was always mindless. However I know you aren't because you posted pictures of the super show and the anime which would mean you would have to include the recent movies where he is a regular guy from Brooklyn.

>>12457859The super show is trash but it's not really their fault I guess, they barely had anything to work withMario 3 is easily the best, it actually looked and felt like the world of the game, had relatively decent animation Mario world is fucking garbage, the animation is somehow even cheaper, Mario and Luigi are weirdly proportioned, and they added stupid fucking cavemen for no reason
>>12457882The Mario 3 guy is way better
>>12461441I always got chuckle from "MARIO FROM DONKEY KONG"
>>12458683>Used to be
>>12462612>added stupid fucking cavemen for no reasonI wouldn't say for no reason, Mario World was supposed to have a dinosaur theme, though honestly they didn't really convey it very well, outside of a couple enemies, Yoshi, and the underground theme. My guess would be that production started on the cartoon before the game was finished, and based on the materials they receive, they inferred that the game would be more explicitly prehistorically themed, so they made the cartoon to fit that idea.
>>12463243Cavemen have nothing to do with dinosaurs. Popular culture that is shockingly inaccurate geologically does not count. The "people" of Dinosaur Land in the game are the dinosaurs!
In what kind of nostalgia induced cope you have to be to think the dic shit was good?
>>12464735In a non-youtuber shill one.
>>12464735Yet its still a better depiction of Mario than anything Nintendo ever did for characterization.

> Saturday Supercade from 1983 -1984- The first actual animated iteration of Mario, as he appeared with Paulina , chasing around Donkey Kong. I don't have much to say about this one as it is hard to many many clips from this show. >Super Mario Bros. OVA "The Movie" - 1986All I have seen of this is the fan translations on Youtube. Mario and Luigi own a store for some reason. This is the first time Luigi was depicted as taller than Mario. >Super Mario Bros. Super Show - 1989- DIC's First stab at Mario with Lou Albanoand Danny Well's performing Mario and Luigi in both live action segments and animated segments. This is generally the most accepted classic portrayal of Mario and Luigi prior to Charles Martinet Mario 64 take over. Because the show came out in 1989, Mario was based on Super Mario Bros. 2 USA mostly. Even though Bowser/ Koopa was still the villain. DIC didn't do a bad job with this. > The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 - 1990 - This was sort of the continuation of the Super Show. But these episodes were clumped together wit Captain N and the Game Masters for season 2 on NBC's Saturday morning block. At least that is where I saw these originally. Lou Albano and Danny Well's were replaced with two different voice actors, who both tried to sound like Lou and Danny. They didn't do a bad job. Bowser was changed to be more of a disgruntled father figure to his Koopa Kids. Overall the show was retooled to advertise Super Mario Bros. 3. back when cartoons could still be over glorified TV ads. > The New Super Mario World - 1991- This was clumped in with season 3 of Captain N. Show was retooled to tie into Super Mario World. The weakest of the bunch outside of mama Luigi memes. DIC's last use of the Mario license. > Super Mario Bros - The Hollywood Movie -1993- Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigo. Bob was still channeling Lou's version of Mario. Leguizamo was doing his own take on the Luigi. I didn't mind these versions.

>>12466510>Supercade Mario is Peter Cullen. Funny enough someone asked him what he thought about voicing a character who would go on to be so important and his response was that it was borderline "what the fuck is a Mario"I can;t believe that I didn't recognise his voice as Mario. Even though he actually does sound like a young Peter Cullen now that you point it out. I am too young to have seen Saturday Supercade in its' original run. I would have been like a one year old when the show aired on CBS. I am mostly just familiar with it through whatever VHS recordings made it to youtube. It looks like an early 80's Ruby-Spears production. The animation and background art actually look quite good for this type of cartoon. Mario looks like his early 80's Donkey Kong art rendition. Pretty funny that Cullen was the first to voice Mario. https://youtu.be/tR5joNASmtY
>>12463239Hey, haven't you people ever heard of a fair fight!?
>>12466295ayyyy
>>12466562Because he's a mustachio Italian-American from Brooklyn. Even modern streamlined Mario still feels like a fat guy to me
>>12466549I don't think I've ever read a Japanese person having an angry reaction over a change, at most they find it stupid and laugh at it and move on and don't stay angry or anything. There's absolutely fan backlash I'm sure but for a lot of changes it's more like "ah they have a new voice a new voice. It's so different from the old one. Isn't that strange! haha!
>>12466549Well Martinet wasnt the one who cheated on his wife and forced his one night stand to abort.
>>12466536>nigga that was a theatrical movie from 86, the OVAS were those silly momotaro shorts with marioSo it was. I don't know anything about the history behind this Mario movie.
>>12458083>>12458086I get the impression Mario was a 35-40 year old in the early days when he was just some Blue Collar regular Joe who happened across turtles and gorillas. But late 00s to 2010s Mario was the happy whimsical adventuring cartoon character they are pretending is in his late 20s. It seems like such a late decision.
>>12467535That did seem like the point of Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. That Mario was just some guy working on a construction site/sewer that happened across enemies while on the job. But he was some tubby short Italian lug. I did kind of like the idea of the blue collar everyman hero the series had for a while there. It's a little more interesting when it's just some plumber on the job that went on the adventure to go fight magical monsters.
>>12467541Especially when you consider that he was a generic replacement for Popeye.
>>12467541That's exactly why SMB worked. It was your hairy Italian uncles saving Wonderland. The longterm problem with Mario is that the fish out of water in a strange land, became the standard setting. It's why the rpgs feel interesting, since it's once again (usually) taking Mario out of the standard world he knows and throwing him into strange new situations. I would say Sunshine, Galaxy and Odyssey were also fairly unique standouts because they were once more taking him to places you didn't expect, to the point that New Donk in Odyssey throwing him back into the type of setting people first associated him with(or even the modern movie), felt like something new and interesting since the Mushroom Kingdom became the "real world" for the character since 1985.

>>12472540I’m talking about somehow some crazy man doing it on his own
I don't think a gruff middle aged man voice with a heavy Brooklyn accent would've been that appealing once the games started having voices

>>12472572>/vr/ is turning into DobsonPretty funny

>>12472572>complains about women in revealing clothes>complains about women not being depicted as strong fighters and acting too girly>complains about "racism">but also complains about a woman no longer being a love interest>also complains about invading female fansYou have to love how Dobson manages to make the messages of this comic repel everybody
>>12472572it sucks that Dobson was right about Mario, but he was. there's a reason that the Illumination movie went with the Brooklyn version instead of the bing-bing-wahoo Mushroom Kingdom native version.
>>12473180He was also a big Other M defender. Which you'd think someone like him would hate even more than the average person who disliked it, since that game loved oggling Samus a lot and also made her whiny and obsessed with a man. But he loved it.He really was just a guy with dumb opinions and loud about it, basically just a /v/ shitposter with a name and face. And you could make anyone hate an opinion if you attach it to a guy who's extremely annoying and articulates it obnoxiously. Most lolcows nowadays need to be into weirder shit(no one knew about the inflation early on) or do something illegal.
So Dobson was right on one thing, right? Mario WAS from Brooklyn. I remember a lot of people denying that and said it was US lore only. And he paints it like some kind of conspiracy.
>>12473908>So Dobson was right on one thing, right? Mario WAS from Brooklyn. I remember a lot of people denying that and said it was US lore only. And he paints it like some kind of conspiracy. It's complicated. It was primarily US lore but the very name "Mario" is itself US lore. It seemed inconsistent with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi's origins in Yoshi's Island, but Miyamoto doesn't actually give a shit about continuity anyway.
Call me an e-celeb cum guzzling fag if you must, but I unironically would've preferred Vinny Vinesauce voicing Mario for the movie over fucking Chris Pratt.
>>12463445>Cavemen have nothing to do with dinosaursThat's true, but I kinda wish cavemen did have to go one on one with dinosaurs though.
>>12472572dobson won
>>12473352I think his biggest sin was that he was just annoying about his opinions, and couldn't move on like most other fans did(and I think he did, but that's a different topic). It's not like it's impossible for non-Japanese and/or media tie-in lore to have an impact on official canon, it happens every now and then. A lot of people still have a fondness for 80's. I'm sure there were plenty of kids who were disappointed of confused to find out all the shit they followed since the 80's wasn't "real".There's a lot to compare with how Sonic lore got treated by the late 90's and early 00's here too
Sorry miyamoto but Mario will ALWAYS look like a middle aged fat fuck to me and you can't brainwash me into seeing him any other way
>>12473935Mario being from Brooklyn is a lot more interesting and makes a lot more sense than any other option. Even in the games he feels out of place, where most of the other good guys are weird mushroom headed things, a princess in a fairytale dress, and kings with magic wands who again are dressed like they're out of a fairytale, while Mario himself is a fat guy in regular overalls. Hell, even that old Mario anime picked up on how the feeling you get from the game is that Mario is a regular guy whisked away into a fantastical world.Maybe the original Mario Bros didn't give this impression, but pretty much everything since did, even if it weren't explicitly explained in the games themselves.
>>12474261>Maybe the original Mario Bros didn't give this impression, but pretty much everything since didYou mean the game that connected him to plumbing above everything else? I think it kinda did

I think there were several accounts they claimed to be Dobson, or it might have been the same guy>They all agreed this had to be Dobson and spammed comments until the account went private.Imageboard retards are as bad or worse than the redditors and other sites they bitch about.
>>12473987>>12475040It really is funny when you think about itThe guy took the ultimate advice about dealing with retards online, and just looked away from the screen and turned off his computer. Probably got a new life. And if that account /co/ sperged about was him, he was still drawing what he liked and iirc improving and practicing animation. Like a /co/ Ulillillia, if it's to believed. I didn't look at it too much desu so maybe it was trash Now there's a high budget officially licensed animated movie adored by millions of children, and it brought back the old lore of Mario being a blue collar guy from Brooklyn and getting warped into the Mushroom Kingdom.
