Unless that's always how it works and I misunderstand what the combos are. Not the end of the world I guess, wrestling aliens to death is fun as fuck.

Hence why there are different states in initiating combat, but normally it's at neutral advantage. So that aspect of combat initiation is possibly a vestigial part of the stealth mechanics that they scrapped.
