>Everyone sucks Sony's and FF7's dicks about how REVOLUTIONARY the shitty 3D polygons and CGI was>"never before done">This game was in development at same time>released a year later>the graphics are alot better>the CGI rapes FF7's>it has fucking voice acting which Final Fantasy didn't have til 2001>No one ever mentions or talks about this cause PS1 was a casual friendly console everyone owned while few people owned a saturnHell this game looks better than fucking FF8. But if you need anymore proof that the PS1 was dogshit and only gets favoritism cause of it's sales here's a another one.
>>12458235>"never before done"great thread my man are there no forums that you can post on in your own language?
>>12458235Not to insult FF7 too much since I like the game for the most part, but it is a lot better than most of Square's PS1 offerings. A truly immersive game that actually respects your time and conveys a genuine sense of spirituality, rather than bombarding you with endless references to Gnosticism and other pretentious shit that don’t really add anything.
>>12458235>No overworld>Barely any towns>Barely any characters>Barely any game
>>12458253>barely any useless shitty side quests that add nothing but waste your time to grind cause japanese devs in general are autist retards
JRPGs were better without voice acting. The PSX FF games would've been better with less CGI in my mind. For me on the Saturn? Shining the Holy Ark.
>>12458262What do you want in your big timesink adventure roleplay? Lots of powerful stuff hidden behind things you can do with places you only visit if you do them? Where your blind playthrough is really "yours" as you naturally stumble on things through intuition? Where you're incentivized to chill out and explore to find optional things?>No, I want it to be a race to the finish where I can focus on the "plot"Have got a game for you!
Isn't this game like 10-15 hours long?
>on a dogshit console no one owned>they made like 20 copies so not even those few people played itI wonder why
Do people seriously think having voice acting in 1998 is supposed to be a big deal. Literally every PS1 game supported voice acting, they just chose not to do it.
>>12458273ff13 is an underrated game with a great OST
>>12458235Voice acting != a better rpgI didn’t care for it in FFX and I don’t care for it now. But I put up with it because FF7 Rebirth is a great game.
>>12458302It's around 10 hours if you don't care about completion rate. Its short length is one of its strengths, it's a cinematic RPG like Parasite Eve. I wish this took off as an actual genre and not just a marketing term.
>>12458235If you're gonna blame anyone blame Sega for underpublishing the game and fucking over the Saturn in general.
>>12458235How's the story and gameplay?
>>12458235Eh. I still like FFVII more but Panzer Dragoon Saga is a great game and mostly lives up to the hype. Top tier RPGs, both of them.
>>12458235FF7 mog this game so hard it's not even funny
>>12458235Is there any way to play this game without selling my grandkids?
>>12458235it's an average game, it has some really good ideas like the position based battle system and being able to respec your dragon on the fly but the story is kitsch as hell and the gameplay and "puzzles" are braindead
>>12458963So like Xenogears, a decent game with some innovative ideas that gets overrated to infinity and beyond by its rabid cult fandom.
>>12458235Soundtrack is better than any final fantasy game too.
>>12458608The story itself isn't super special but it has its moments and a very cool setting both aesthetically and conceptually. It fleshes out the setting of the series as a whole too, if you played the first two games. The gameplay is the real draw here, they managed to adapt the rail shooter gameplay into a turn based JRPG seamlessly, it's genuinely incredible how they managed to translate Panzer Dragoon into an RPG.
>>12459635Playing the first two games and seeing all the callbacks when I finally played Saga on mednafen a year or two back was really special, it really completes the whole experience.
>>12458235Isn’t that just typical? Phantasy Star 1 completely mogs Final Fantasy 1 and they came out days apart, yet Final Fantasy is the revolutionary one.
Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of those games that I have a hard time believing is "that good". Only reason why I am skeptical is due to not only the price, but how limited it actually is. Saturn emulation sucks, and you basically need to do the hurdles of modding/burning CDs to play one on original hardware short of spending 1k+I've just seen too many games in my life on the internet that were "REALLY GOOD, SECRET GEMS!" that either finally get translated or released in a wider format and kind of expose them as being "okay" video games. This is that final white whale for me.
>>12458235It would be considered only a 7/10 if it were on PS1
>>12459671For what it's worth, I played through the whole game just fine on medafen, though my bin cue that I found wouldn't play the final fmv after the credits iirc which sucked. Gotta find a better set.I would say that the gameplay itself is quite fun, and combat is mostly enjoyable but it has the problem of being too easy - by the end of the game there isn't much that threatens you which is a shame. If that decomp ever finishes I'd love for some hard mode hacks to keep things interesting for repeat playthroughs other than, say, self-imposed/low-level challenges. Also, for those that have played, you might agree with me that having most of disc three take place in and around a sewer dungeon was pretty lame!!
>>12459649Only in terms of aesthetic; gameplay-wise, FF was miles ahead
>>12459671Saturn emulation isn't stellar but it's pretty much plug in and play at this point.
>>12459682Yeah that dungeon was the low point of the game.
>>12459719Whatever "plug and play" is. Ridiculous.Even mednafen has its own problems that require configuration from time to time.
>>12459759Such as.
>>12458381>ff13 is an underrated gameAbsolutely not. Also not retro
Panzer Dragoon Saga is actually a great rpg. It’s not for everyone and it has it’s own style, like anything. It’s brand is short and cinematic, with a unique battle system and a good story. It had good graphics and music and a few secrets. It’s good for people like me who enjoy a more casual RPG, if they play them at all. It was a great counter to FF7, which also tried to appeal to the more casual RPG players. But the PS1 has a shit ton of all time great RPGs. The Saturn even has a few others like Shining Force 3 and Grandia and Holy Ark. I think a few things led to this whole, contrarian/underdog/hidden gem complex around the game. It was a very limited release and it did some unique things for the time and it looked very good. Anytime something is really unique, it will win a few fans. A few people will honestly think its the best ever, and good for them. Anyone can see it has great graphics, so that makes some normal people interested. Now add in the fact that almost nobody could play it for a while, and you get this really hyped up game. A few people love it, it looks good, and almost nobody can play it. It IS good, but that’s only like one part of the hype.
>>12459920>It was a great counter to FF7HAHAHA
bro goes on a revenge quest because his coworkers die and he wants to fuck a fossil woman
>>12459992When a dragon gives you a cryptic psychic vision, you're not allowed to refuse.
>>12460007if it's cryptic, won't you be confused about the instructions.
>>12458235>graphics are a lot betterLMFAO not even close retard. and you forgot to mention>is 10 hours long>retarded forgettable story>retarded forgettable charactersFF7 isnt legendary because of 90s cgi and prerendered backgrounds, its because the story and characters made people feel things
>>12458273the problem with ff13 isnt being linear, ffx was too and its beloved. it's that the plot, characters and writing fucking SUCK ASS
>>12459693Almost nothing in Final Fantasy works. Stats and spells and items and weapons are all coded wrong.
>LMFAO not even close retard
>>12458235>No one ever mentionsThis game has way more exposure than almost every PS1 RPG and way more than it deserves.
>>12460029Same for Phantasy Star, that was just the standard for 8 bit RPGs. Phantasy Star I only has single enemy encounters because the poor wittle Master System couldn’t render more than one battle sprite at a time. Compare that with FF I and DQ III from the same time, way larger and more dynamic enemy formations. At least with DQ1 it was 1 on 1 battles so that design choice made sense, in PS I you just mash A for all your party members as they obliterate whatever poor bastard you ran into. On top of all that, you can save anywhere, further evaporating any challenge the game could’ve had. The sequels are a lot better in these regards though, and II is genuinely impressive for an 80s RPG. The first one, not so much.
>>12458235Least appealing cover art in history
>>12459927I mean they're both menu simulators for babies. The real question is do you like flying around on a dragon or snowboarding more?
>>12460125>Same for Phantasy StarNo, not same for Phantasy Star. Five spells in FF1 don't work at all. The INT stat doesn't work. Elemental weapons don't work. Luck doesn't work. Phantasy Star is, regardless of whether you like what it has to offer, a more functional and technically impressive game.
>>12458235>No one ever mentions or talks about this cause PS1 was a casual friendly console everyone owned while few people owned a saturn It could also be because it sold like 25k copies in the US and even less in Europe which is pathetic for just about any console including the Saturn.
>>12458235PDS is amazing, but it has like two ephemeral towns and a menu-based overworld.I do not believe it really needed 4 discs, that was probably a technical failing.
>>12458969Xenogears isn't overrated, it's an 80-hour epic
I was a die hard Sega fan and Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast owner. I loved my Saturn and I loved Panzer Dragoon Zwei. I really wanted to love Panzer Dragoon Saga, but it just isn't that good. For a start, "Saga" isn't an appropriate name for such a short game. The addition of dialogue and text stripped the game of the mysteriousness of it's rail shooter predecessors without actually providing any interesting lore or worldbuilding (it's just Nausicaa - AGAIN). The environments and ambience are awesome but there are too few locations, too few places to go and not enough to do. You're barred from any major cities on the map, the best the game can offer is a couple of 3D villages (impressive, but pointless - the 3D doesn't add anything) a camp site, and some mazes. The battle system is conceptually novel and interesting. For a while. It's criminally short. I'd have preferred static prerendered environments over janky 3D settlements if it meant more than ten hours of gameplay and more exploration of such a potentially interesting world.
>>12458235This game sold so badly in japan that one of the devs committed suicide.
>>12459671>Saturn emulation sucks, and you basically need to do the hurdles of modding/burning CDs to play one on original hardware short of spending 1k+Saturn emulators could play this game since 2008 (2004 if you count the leaked girigiri), burning games is a 2 click solution, and modding is as difficult as putting in a cartridge. What rock have you been living under for the past twenty years?
>>12460461Ephemeral is a great word to use for them, lolSpoilers:I remember thinking by the end stretch "Who the fuck is left alive in this game??"
>>12458235PS1 wasn't dogshit, FF was.
>>12458235What about the characters or the writing or the gameplay? I was sold FFVII when I saw the Nomura drawings in a gamepro magazine back in the day
>>12465167PD as a series is less about the characters and more about the very bleak and desolate world the games take place in. I like my boy Edge and the cast of PDS but there's something very special about this turbo-fucked brown and dusty future the games take place in.The fact that every character is voiced doesn't take away from the mystique in my opinion but adds a lot of color to the world.
It definitely does not look better than ff8
>>12461502Yes, PDS is a case of a game that has great lore, yet mediocre plot.
>>12460064>>12460025>upscaling 32 bit games
>>12459671>Saturn emulation sucksMednafen plays Saturn flawlessly
>>12458235Wouldn't have been as much of a problem if SEGA didn't lose the source code like idiots.
>>12465745dumb retardgo play Steamgear Mash on Mednafen and see what happens
>>12458235But it was on a sega console. Consequently, nobody heard of it and it went onto the "obscure gems" shelf. Few such cases, probably at least 5 sega video games worth playing overall...
>>12465762It plays exactly the same on an actual Saturn
>>12458235>>"never before done"Says who? Point them out to me, you sad little faggot.Little zoomer faggot with nothing to say, faggot greentext thread.
