Behold, the bane of complete copies of disc-based games. How many jewel cases and instruction manuals were thrown out to feed these insatiable beasts?
>>
>>12461128
Are these really that bad for discs? I have so many disc games that I eventually had to box up all of my cases for storage and put the discs in these binders.
>>
>>12461141
These are great for games, but bad for collectors lol
>>
>>12461141
The sleeves tend to have softeners in them that seep out. Same with cheap "diploma binders", they will literally fuse to the paper.
>>
>>12461128
I've been thinking about getting one of these for my DVDs and blu-rays. Shit just takes up so much space.
>>
>>12461128
I want to punch everyone who have used this crap.

>The sleeves tend to have softeners in them that seep out.
After all these years I finally get an answer why mine was filled with weird yellow shit after not touching it for a few years
>>

> How many jewel cases and instruction manuals were thrown out to feed these insatiable beasts?
None. I always thought the jewel cases and manuals were beautiful.
>>
>>12461128
Jewel cases weren't built to last.
>>
>>12461443
They last just fine if you put them on a shelf and handle them like a competent human being
>>
>>12461128
I only ever put burnt CDs into these, never the originals.
>>
dont think i ever saw anyone use these for games besides the filipino kid who brought back a bunch of bootleg ps1 discs when he visited his grandparents
>>
>all my brothers loved these and used them for all their CDs and DVDs
>even as a kid I thought that was fucking horrible and tried to hold onto every game case for as long as I could
>>
>>12461141
>Are these really that bad for discs?
Depends on type, I've seen ones where the plastic partially melted and gripped the disc so tight that it would tear off parts of the data layer when you took the disc out. Of course those discs were with the label front, but you kind of have to do that if you want to know which disc is which.
>>
>>12461417
>>12461470
You have to buy good ones from Japan. I recently put my whole CD/DVD collection into 5 200 disc SANWA binders, they've been awesome. I made lossless digital copies of everything, so I much preferred having the extra space.
>>
>>12461456
Oh shit i had a philipino friend i visisted and he had bootleg psx games too. I specifically recall a bootleg spiderman game, or maybe it was the PAL version?
>>
>>12461532
*i visited when i was in elementary school

I didnt know that was a thing
>>
I use them, i keep games to play not to display. As long as you dont live in a tropical shit hole with no AC they're fine forever. Have discs that have been in binders for 30+ years still play fine

I've had PS1 jewelcases shatter just from flopping over, they're simply a horrible storage medium.
>>
>>12462018
this, and its not even age, they were brittle from day one. every ps1 case i have is cracked, it was to be expected.

LOVE THEM!

All my PSX games are on black CDs I only need to print the disk covers eventually if I find a nice set online.
>>
>>12461128
>How many jewel cases and instruction manuals were thrown out to feed these insatiable beasts?
None.
You see, there are no booklets nor cases to throw away when you pirate your games and burn them onto CDs.
You cut the middle man and end up with dozens of DVDs and CDs branded with a black sharpie.
>>
>>12462337
holy late 90s and early 2000s, absolute good photo anon.
>>
>>12461141
Over time the plastic in them degrades and can 'fuse' with the discs (but can be cleaned off sometimes). Unsure if this damages the disc much (or the data stored on them), but can be an issue.
>>
>>12461141
The material is important. A lot of soft plastics can degrade over time and leak acidic residue, especially if they're stored some place without good ventilation. Vinyl is generally safe and I think polyethylene is another storage-safe plastic. Just find out what it's made of first.

Thanks man, I really do love physical media.
Even OG hardware mods with burned CDRs feel homey and comfy and fire at the same time for me.

Specially inserting the black discs and contemplating the darkness of their bottom side.

Nothing beats the click of a PSOne, the booting timing perfectly synced with the optical motor... ufff... luscious..
>>
>>12462987
Depends. If I recall correctly, CDR have the data film layer closer to the bottom surface.

DVDs and BR have the data layer closer to the cover surface.

So a scratch on the cover of a musical CD is not damning. But a peel of the cover or scratch of the cover of say.. a PS4 game is damning because the data is immediately under the cover.

I cant recall... CDR and DVD might be the same, it has been a while since I researched buffing some CDs I got in bulk in Marketplace.
>>
>>12463361
I think you have it backwards. CDs and DVDs have the data layers closer to the label side of the disk or middle, whereas BDs are close to the bottom surface of the disk. It's why you can't resurface DBs, you're basically just scrubbing the data layers off (BDs are also made way more durable than CDs and DVDs were so you're not likely to scratch them if you aren't a dumbass though)
>>
>>12462018
>>12462041
All of mine are perfectly intact. Even the longbox jewel cases that are notoriously fragile. The only damaged cases I own are PS1 Q-Packs.

You are absolutely right, reason why you can buff CDs (and DVDs?) which is basically sanding them pretty finely to even the surface down to the scratch level and then buffing it with some plastifier intermediate to give it a shiny finish again.

And you are right, I was to high to use my memory, but in the 90s we could get away with listening to cds with scratches but never with flakes of the cover peeled off the upper side.

With PS4 games I have been able to run games with tiny flakes and deep scratches on the cover, but not the ones with perfect covers but scratched bottoms.

why not just emulate and save space or whatever?
>>
>>12464117
something something load times
>>
>>12461128
nobody actually used these though, right? i have never ever met anyone that didn't keep the boxes and manuals.
>>
>>12463352
All I can say is your handwriting is better than mine. It is neat but I was doing this in 99-01 because I thought I was “cool” for being part of this huge piracy group. No idea why I thought that. Anyway I like all my stuff CiB regardless of space but I can definitely dig someone doing this. Simple, easy, clean, no mess just a fuckton of games in a neat small package. What’s your favorite game and post pic w the cover, would you kindly?
>>
>>12464117
Why not just use original hardware and not save space or whatever?
>>
>>12464608
A lot of people used these to carry music CDs to act as a sort of portable music library for your walkman. I often did that too, but I, like most people I knew, had the sense to not throw the cases away, but there were some who did. And I guess when people saw videogames in disc format they were just like "oh I can stuff these in those little folios too!", of course portability wasn't as big a factor with games as it was with music but they were still handy to carry games with you to a friend's house or whatever. Most people still didn't throw the cases away but it did make them easier to be lost in one way or another. You get home from a friend's house and say you'll put your games back in their cases some other time, at some point some cases have remained empty for months and some of them end up being forgotten about and eventually thrown away.

This is SOVL... I know it's not best for the disk, but it reminds me of when I was a child and had these.
>>
A few years ago I found an absolutely killer ps1 collection in a huge binder like this at a yard sale. I made them go look for the cases but no luck.
I have been slowly buying the case/manual when I can score them cheap enough, which is almost never.

Yeah, I love the hardware.
I had a PSX in middle school, the big one.
When I crossed high school and entered University the PSX was not retro, just deprecated by PS2, so a friend introduced me into a lot of classics when I got a dirt cheap PSOne in a Open Market, he had hundreds of original classics, he was a true collector.

I dont mind using backups now, I see it as cool as I would have seen it in middle school, to be able to softmod the PSOne with a memory card, in order to boot any backup. Gorgeous.

>>12467428
You're supposed to use them for burned discs, not actual retail discs that already come in a case. How much space does a small bookshelf take up in your home?

This is kind of right. I have had to transport media in CD Binders but only for a while, then back to jewel cases.
>>
>>12461128
All of mine, for one. I never had an interest in heaps of jewel cases or the majority of manuals. The manuals I did keep were just in a drawer.
>>
They were great to bring music, movies, and games to trip and parties, but druggies always go through them at the first chance they get.

An easy way to lose a bunch of Media at once if you take it out of your home regularly.

This was our version of Spotify in the car in the 90s.
>>
>>12461128
This is me except I use the thin clear jewel cases. Might upgrade to one of these bad boys as even the jewel cases take up too much space.

Fuck paying out the ass for a plastic case and a manual. The manual is nice, but I can just read it online nowadays, especially since most of them are so weathered and nearly falling apart that a mint manual is going to cost you quite a bit.
>>
>>12461128
I never used those things.

Looking for Guilty Gear and Silent Hill PAL manuals btw :^)

Best decision I ever made taking the CD wallet pill, I would have died a horder's death, i had piles and piles of video game cases, now I got 4 500 CD wallets organized by generation, system and alphabetical order

that just feels like a recipe for disaster
