Rpgs with areas where you can fight enemies you are not meant to fight? I love the high risk high reward of this places

Coudn't you fight some overpowered enemies in FF2 too? I remember walking to the left on the world map right at the beginning of the game and being raped by Bombs or something.

Yep. If you exploit the system you can walk straight to Mysidia and buy most of the best weapons and magic in the game before doing even the first regular dungeon.

FF8 had it too.
Picrel you can access cactuar island battles from this edge to gain early AP.
And there's an edge of a cliff that gives you battles from the clifftop instead of where you are iirc.
>>
>>12462170
If you do this then you become underpowered.
Stronger Weapons -> Less hits per kill -> Lower stat growth from the same encounters
>>
>>12462246
Not really. To make it there and also have enough money to buy the spells and equipment you already have to do the attack your own party trick to game the leveling system. So after that everything you encounter is trivial whether you nuke them with Holy or just attack. I don't recommend because then the whole rest of the game is slogging through boring dungeons where nothing can hurt you for a story that sucks anyways. I thought I hated FF2 until I played it sincerely instead of just breaking it because it's possible.

I always thought that those «power peninsula» were intentional, until nu-square patched them on latest re-releases.

Near the starting zone of Shining Force Neo for Ps2 there's a dungeon with very late game monsters that you can kill from a distance with a thunder wand. It's risky because you'll be one shotted and it takes a good time to kill the first one, but you'll level up multiple times when you do.
I spent like an hour grinding here and then I facerolled the whole game until the very last dungeon.
>>
>>12462057
Golden sun had a few side quest bosses that were pretty challenging.

In Rudra no Hihou I ran into a place like this that I imagine probably a lot of players have found. I know I saw it used in a speedrun. It's a point near the beginning of Surlent's story where you're supposed to maybe come from the left, explore a dungeon, and then go back to the left, but if you continue to the right instead, you enter a desert full of strong monsters that's supposed to come later in the story or play a role in another character's story or something. And with that game's magic system, you can very likely (as long as you aren't a complete beginner who happened to choose Surlent's story first) figure out a way to crush those monsters despite your low level, which is very good for grinding.

I know for a fact that some Famicom DQs also have the equivalent of the peninsula of power but I don't remember which or where

Anyway not sure if it counts because it's 100% intentional but the Grand Dragon's up Gizamaluke's Grotto in FF9 at the end of disc 1 / start of disc 2.
I figured out a way to safely kill them a long time ago, which doesn't involve frogs or thievery. You can have your entire party become immune to every single of their attacks except physical attack so they can only kill one character at a time, at which point it's only a matter of time and having 99 phoenix downs to kill them. I don't think this was ever documented, at least I never did for my findings, all I remember is that you can only do it at the start of disc 2 after Garnet's scenario because you need gear that can only be acquired if you backtrack to Dahli during Garnet's (and then that gear is useable for Zidane once the game goes back to him). The rest of the equipment required was acquired a bit everywhere too, including Chocobos.
The fact that you can do this but only if you've found pretty much every single secret in the game so far tells me it was intentional.

>I know for a fact that some Famicom DQs also have the equivalent of the peninsula of power but I don't remember which or where
I know there ought to be more but the only one that I remember is directly south of Tantegel where you can fight MagiDrakee, Scorpions, and Magicians. It's easy and optimal even to level there, cast Heal, and replenish MP in the castle for free without using the inn. I like to do that to afford a Hand Axe as my first upgrade.
>Grand Dragon's up Gizamaluke's Grotto in FF9
I think Quina has blue magic from a nearby enemy that kills the dragons as long as Quina's HP is really low or something? I forgot that one.

FFXII is incredibly full of early strong monsters.
The Estersand and Giza:
>Wild Saurian drops Bone Helm
>Greeden rare game, steal wind magicite I think for Traveling Garb
>Werewolf drops Kotetsu
and the Westersand is even better
>Lindbur Wolf rare game, chain 20 wolves and steal Gladius
>Dustia, infamous undead for powerleveling
>Fideliant rare game, drops Heavy Lance
>Dive Talon drops Burning Bow
>Green slimes drop Winged Helms I think?
And that's just the beginning. After you get through Raithwall's Tomb 75% of the game pretty much opens up and you can find stupidly strong enemies in the Necrohol of Nabudis and deeper Barheim. Mom Bomb can be a bitch without Nihopalaoa and Cuchulainn is extremely hard to beat if you aren't a powerleveler with the right gambits, gear, and remedies (plus the lores for extra status curing).

Currently playing Satomi Hakkenden (A DQlike) and it doesn't go as hard on script blocking you. Generally you just need to pay a toll to move to another area which will have incrementally stronger enemies, but you can keep doing that until you do run into a script block. iirc there is an area near the starting town with stronger enemies that you'll have to backtrack too later, but I didn't check it out at the start and they didn't seem THAT strong when I was backtracking for some locked doors.

Surprised no one has mentioned climbing the vine in FF9 to fight grand dragons on disc 1
>>
>>12462735
>I think Quina has blue magic from a nearby enemy that kills the dragons as long as Quina's HP is really low or something? I forgot that one.

That's not available at the start of disc 2 iirc, only much later. Grand Dragons have three attacks:
>basic physical attack
>poison attack
>lightning attack
You can teach everyone poison immunity and either lightning immunity (or lightning absorb) but it takes to find lot's of secrets, going back to Dalhi as Garnet for some of the gear required being the reason it doesn't work at the end of disc1 and only at the start of disc 2

I know this is common in the Might and Magic RPGs. M&M2 in particular. So much so that a common strategy is to take advantage of this and go fight the Castle Guards for easy early-game EXP since there's only 6 of them compared to the 100's or 1,000's of regular enemies you might encounter.

In Earthbound you can take advantage of the free healing spots during your first visit to Winters to grind up Jeff to something decently powerful, as well as harvest enough items to sell for cash to buy some powerful equipment for your party. The baseball bat will turn Ness into walking death until you reach Summers.

In Dragon Quest 3 there is a small patch of land where you can encounter monsters that are rather easy but give good EXP, making it a good place to get your people leveled up to be ready to take on Metal Babbles and Metal Slimes. It can come in handy when re-classing to get people back up to a useful level.

FF6 has a small island in the World of Balance that you have no reason to visit, that contains some crazy powerful monster who is invisible and throws nasty attacks and magic. If you can take it down, you can get some major EXP for the WoB, but it's tricky if you don't know what to expect. You won't get crazy points to learn magic like you do with the Cactuar in the WoR, but until you reach the WoR it is the best grinding spot.

In Breath of Fire 3, the zone called Containment Yard has two random enemies that you're supposed to avoid because they're extremely OP, but if you manage to kill them early they'll give you enough exp to level up a few times and maybe drop some of the best equipment ingame. It's a bit late into the game, though.

In M&M2 the size of enemy encounters depends on the max HP of your party. If you want to gain many levels quick then you can drink many potions that temporary increase the max HP, drink from the fountain that lets you cast all spells and then fight an undead only encounter. The Holy Word spell instantly kills all undead with a 100% chance.

Conversely you can also game the system by rerolling stats to get extremely low values of endurance and always train in the first city which will ensure that outside of fixed battles encounter sizes are less than 10 enemies.
Low HP + Low encounter sizes is better than High HP + High enounter sizes because of the way healing spells work. It makes combat much faster too.

That's a great place to farm magic points for espers, because you can instakill invisible enemies using X-Zone or Doom.

FF7 has the alarm in Junon. On disc 1, in the tunnel that leads to the submarine, you can activate the alarm on the wall and you'll be able to fight enemies from disc 2.

YES, yes there are. I guess the trick doesn't matter at all. Hilarious.

>The Holy Word spell instantly kills all undead with a 100% chance.
I've played the PC DOS version, the Genesis port, and the western SNES port, and I've never had Holy Word work 100% against undead assholes. I actually just use Disintegrate on everything. Technically, if you really wanna speed-level, you can just go see the unicorn for the gold, then keep returning Mark's Keys to Mark for 100,000EXP for each trip with no combats. Although getting to the unicorn is far more RNG-happy in the PC version than the console versions.
The funny part is you really don't need to be all that high-level or high stats to beat the game, since you only need to clear the quests and nothing in the quests requires a party over level 20 or so. The only reason to level like a madman and stat-boost and get +x equipment is to make a run at the 64 Devil Kings outside of the final room. I ended up editing my save file just to get my team strong enough to handle them.

Indeed. Finally playing FF2 earnestly is what then got me into Romancing SaGa which I now love.

>>12462764
It is actually the Lindbur Wolf you get the Gladius from. The Kaiser Wolf is a Trophy Rare Game that doesn't spawn until you start that sidequest post-Draklor.

Is Cactuar trying to say “Oooooooo”?

>Shining Force Neo
Nice. I just finished that one. The moment you can get the Frost Rod there with an attached Ice Pike Lv.1 you can start the whole high level grinding journey till you hit Level 100 and max out most of your Force Arts with only Meryl with you. Magic is pretty broken there with Ice Pike juggling enemies it hit and its auto targeting so you just run a bit and mash triangle till the enemies drop dead.

EXA pretty much nerfed Ice magic by reducing Ice Pike count from 6 to 2 so its pretty much useless now.

ff6 not having this but just the stupid dinosaur area is a major flaw
>>
>>12462057
In Octopath Traveler after leaving the first town you can walk to any other town on the continent early on, and the beginner area tends to have a dungeon with high level monsters and treasures, with the right tricks you can get rich 30 minutes into the game
>>
Wild arms 1 has one too right? Or is the place where you just grind lvls easily
>>
I remember in Phantasy star 1, if you walk alongside the beach, you'll find strong enemies
>>
I can't recall if it's FF4 or FF5, but one of those two games has a basement in a castle with the door sealed shut. Later on in the game you come from the other side, but earlier in the game you only have access to a small room. But the enemies are geared towards the later encounter, and can petrify your party quickly. Still, with proper care taken, it's a damn good grinding spot since the enemies give a lot more EXP than what you'll be finding at that stage in the game.
>>
>>12462057
there is some shrine in digimon world 3 where you have to go in like the later half of the game but accesible since the first several hours in. The nunemon there are really strong at that time if you dont know what you are doing, but it's the second highest xp and money fight.

Another place at the same game is fishing in divermon's lake that you can do at the very beggining after getting the rod and they are even more nasty, they will almost one-shot you or hit twice
>>
>>12466963
It's FF5, when you first get to Galuf's World you can go to the basement of his castle and fight stone enemies called Objet d'art that give a ton of ABP (Job Points), especially when they come in groups of 5. When you get to World 3 you can explore the rest of the basement and encounter Odin.
